I'm not sure how the myth came about that China was on it's way to being an economic rival to America. The country is overwhelmingly poor. The economy itself is bouyed by its mere size and surplus of what is essentially slave labor.Their export sector is comprised of down-market goods and still is nowhere near as large as ours.

Can you imagine 1,341,450,000 Chinese buying new cars and trying to drive them through their cities?  They'd have week long traffic jams.
