Was just thinking today, does anybody know when it was invented?
I don't remember ever seeing video or pictures of it being used during Arnold, Franco, etc. era
-
It was invented in Sydney, Australia in 1972 by Vincent Basile.

-
Basile invented the 44 degree leg press by putting a 5 plate plate under the 45 degree press

No
The thought just came to my mind
I know I've seen pictures of Arnold using the vertical leg press, but I've never seen any pictures from that era of the modern 45 degree press
-
Not sure exactely when it was invented but I do know that every gym didn't have one. I didn't start using one until about 1980-81.
-
Basile is the kind of guy who would use a blueprint to build an idiot
-
If we were to kill everyone who dislike's Basile. It wouldn't be murder, it would be genocide.
-
At least there is one good thing about Basile's body. It isn't as ugly as his face.
-

lol are you impying that during the "Iron Age" Vince would lay on the ground and leg press a see saw full of 12 year olds to work the quads?

hi vince ;)
-
Early 80's was the first time I saw or used one. Before that it was the one that you layed flat on your back and pushed the weight straight up. They were brutal to load and unload.
-
we had one that was really old in my gym that was built sumtime in the early 60s if that helps...still works good today it can hold 16 plate/side
-
I remember someone writing about how leg development got a lot better in general when this machine was "invented". Thought about it and it makes sense. You can place a ton of tension on the quad and you're fairly comfortable while doing it, unlike squats. :D Plus squats do not suit everybody's structure. Look at Arnold squatting - not a good structure for this exercise.
Personally, after about 20 years in gyms I have never really leg pressed on a 45 degree machine. I only get a very short range of motion I'm sure due to inflexibility. Heels come up after a couple of inches unless I have half of my foot off the platform, and then it's a glute/ham move mostly.
