Broadcaster apologizes for sexist remark

Updated Jan 4, 2011 11:41 AM ET
Veteran ESPN broadcaster Ron Franklin has apologized for a comment he made toward a coworker that led tthe cable network to pull him from the air before Saturday's Fiesta Bowl.

"I said some things I shouldn't have and am sorry. I deserved to be taken off the Fiesta Bowl," Franklin said in a statement late Monday.

Franklin was disciplined after he called ESPN sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards "sweet baby" and "a--hole" during an off-air spat, according to several reports.

Franklin and Edwards were scheduled to work together for Friday's Chick-fil-A Bowl, and the incident occurred in a pregame production meeting also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore.

ESPN: THE FIGHT
What started this war of words? Sports by Brooks has all the details.
The conversation turned to the subject of Gilmore's wife, Marie, being elected mayor of Alameda, Calif., and that's reportedly when the confrontation began.

"Listen to me, sweet baby, let me tell you something," Franklin reportedly told her.

“Don’t call me sweet baby, I don’t like being talked to like that,” Edwards responded.

Franklin then said, “OK then, listen to me, a--hole.”

Franklin's comments were reported to ESPN management. Management attempted to pull Franklin from the Chick-fil-A Bowl broadcast, but it was too late to find a replacement.

Franklin was pulled from the Fiesta Bowl broadcast Saturday instead. Franklin, who signed a two-year contract with ESPN last July, apparently will not be disciplined further, an ESPN source told Sports by Brooks.

Sports by Brooks initially reported the incident Sunday. It was confirmed Monday by USA Today.

That's the difference between the bodybuilding industry and a real sports industry and sport, the sports industry and sport hold themselves to a higher standard and when they get out of line that could possibly ruin the integrity of the industry they get disciplined. Unlike bodybuilding where you can be a drug dealer, do G4P, have multiple felony convictions and rig contests and nothing will happen!

Quoted for the absolute truth.

Only thing is that Gay-4-Pay isn't anything bad.  It is but merely a way for young, upcoming pros to get sponsorships prior to making it big like Jay Cutler.  The vast majority of IFBB pros have at one time or another taken part in G4P, benefited greatly and walked away from it once they able to support themselves on their own.

The drug dealing, pros with multiple felony counts and contest fixing are certainly things that need to be seen to within the IFBB.

Hey Wiggs, you'll like this one (i'm paraphrasing):

 - a new financial bill was proposed that would make credit car companies use a person's personal income as opposed to a household income to determine credit worthiness
 - some women are calling this discrimination against women and an attack on their human rights (because, naturally, less women would qualify for credit cards)

what is the motivation behind changing from household income to personal income? wouldnt household income work just as well as personal income for determining ability to pay back money loaned?

Not necessarily.  A stay at home wife with no income has no more ability to pay off a credit card than a 5 year old child.

And Franklin's almost 69 years old.  He could care less about being PC.  From another incident:
Quote
On October 1, 2005, according to the Chicago Tribune, during a game between Notre Dame and Purdue that Franklin was calling, sideline reporter Holly Rowe praised Purdue defensive coordinator Brock Spack for using all three timeouts on defense despite trailing by four touchdowns late in the game. "If the coaches are giving up," Rowe added, "what does that say to the players?" Franklin responded: "Holly, it's not giving up. It's 49-21, sweetheart."

In response to that, Mo Davenport, senior coordinating producer for college football said, "It was an inappropriate comment, and we've communicated that to Ron. There's never a reason to say something so mean-spirited. Ron apologized. We dealt with it internally."

Looks like he got the axe:

ESPN has fired announcer Ron Franklin after he reportedly berated a female colleague.

The network had pulled him from its radio coverage of Saturday's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, and Franklin issued a public apology Monday.

Sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards wrote in an e-mail to USA Today in response to Internet reports Monday that Franklin called her "sweet baby" in a condescending tone Friday. When she objected, he used a derogatory term. Edwards said a colleague reported the incident to ESPN officials.

"Based on what occurred last Friday, we have ended our relationship with him," ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said Tuesday.

Franklin had worked for ESPN since 1987, calling primarily college football and basketball. He focused on the Big 12 in recent years.

In this case, the lady in question is a grown ass woman, and apparently, the asshole had said something about dude's wife...

I've actually got into it with a co-worker who, sista girl, said she was gonn beat my ass---told her to come over and do it--a lot of wolfing---we had a meeting, and she and I are the best of friends now...

I don't think dude should have apologized per se, because it puts into that female co-worker's mind that she get preferitial treatment, and that they can say a little bit more, yet the men can't.

The Judicial system favors women, like it or not. Men can be victims, but we are told to "take it like a man", yet women get shit handed to them--they can cut off a man penis and get away with it. They can throw hot grits on you, and get away with it. They can falsely accuse you of something in a restraining order, and have it served on you at your job, and have your co-workers think you are a creep---and there is nothing you do about it...

What dude should have done, was pick his words wisely...

some disgusting attitudes in this thread

That's one good thing about the Arabs. They know how to keep their bitches under control with a heavy pimp hand.

I have dealt with women who were total bitches and had it out with them too, but to talk condescendingly to a female just because you as an individual don't respect them is uncalled for especially if you work at a professional level. What would be cool is to see how many of the puds here really do talk that way to a female at work and not find themselves reprimanded. Bet after that reprimand they either quit or just learn now to pick their words wisely....
Lot of women haters here..............
