The banking exec will replace interim chief of staff Pete Rouse.
WASHINGTON — Two administration officials tell The Associated Press that William Daley will be the next White House chief of staff.
President Barack Obama has chosen Daley, a former commerce secretary, to replace interim chief of staff Pete Rouse.
Rouse, who did not want to stay in the job and recommended Daley for it, will remain at the White House in a senior position as counselor to Obama.

I guess the story about Obama lying about NAFTA is all that much more credible.

From Yahoo News:
Daley made his name in politics as a special counsel to then-President Bill Clinton, coordinating the successful campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement and then serving as Clinton's commerce secretary. Later, he ran Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign and the historic recount effort that ended with Gore conceding the race to George W. Bush.
Daley went into business after that race, and is now Midwest chairman of JPMorgan Chase.

Did Bush even surround himself with this many Wall St. guys? This looks to me like Obama is jockeying himself for an executive position at a PE firm like Carlyle after his ass is voted out in 2012.

There were no Madoffs available? The head of AIG didn't want it? Countrywide? Goldman?
Ugh!
Everyday this administration makes more wrong choices and decisions, and is intent on hurting us even more than Bush did, and on helping the wealthy and multinational corporations alone.
I guess Daley will be muscling all the other horrible (non)free trade agreements through? It's obviously a huge priority of Obama's, tragically for us.

Every time he's late to something can he be charged $10? As a former Chase exec he should have to abide the stingy policies he helped create.

Obama Praises Bill Daley's "Forward Looking Vision"
By Stephanie Condon
President Obama today announced the appointment of William Daley as his new chief of staff. "Few Americans can boast the breadth of experience that Bill brings to this job," Mr. Obama said from the White House.
Daley, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. executive who previously served as commerce secretary under President Clinton, has a "deep understanding of how jobs are created," the president said. He praised his new chief of staff's "experience, strong values and forward-looking vision."
Mr. Obama joked that Daley, a part of the famous political dynasty from Mr. Obama's home town of Chicago, has "a smidgen of awareness of how our system of government works. You might say it is a genetic trait."
Daley said it was an honor for him to accept the position, vacated by Rahm Emanuel last fall. He told Mr. Obama, "You, Mr. President, have proven your strength, your leadership, your vision during a most difficult time for the nation."...
