I know most of you warriors never take any time off, but if you did, would you go back to the gym for a few weeks before going back on? Or would you go back on first, so that you weren't a total fucking pussy when you did start training again (assuming you ever went off, of course)?
This hypothetical question is for a hypothetical friend of mine.

start cycle ----> train

has nothing to do with that, you go in and train, start at your own speed...then work up, who are you a pussy to? Why hope on the sauce right away? Build that base, not your ego.
Not that this really matters, but Triple H was talking that after his injury he could bench 135...of course he possibly got on the sauce, but image a dude that big, not being able to bench 135...

Upper-body injuries - especially shoulders - are a BITCH. A snowboarding injury - and re-injury and re-injury and....yeah, that - destroyed my chances of becoming men's physique superstar almost a decade ago and I still have not recovered.
I agree that being a pussy is relative, but one *can* be a pussy by his own standards...just gotta be honest about that shit. And when it comes to self-assessment, I'm brutally fucking honest. Worse than a figure chick who keeps placing 14th.
That said, I will share your advice with my friend.

Start training again and when that's on a good way, jump on gear... Most guys who lift only when on, aren't really that impressive, given that some actually go off...

I can see that...but, really people are using hopping on the gas right away as a crutch for their ego. They don't know what they can accomplish while not on it. I am very ignorant when it comes to taking "stuff" and I've learned a ton on here. My thing, is if you ain't trying to compete and like to lift, why go down that road?

I agree with this. Save the good stuff till you're putting up decent numbers again.

Tre said, "BACK on", meaning he's cycled before. Once you've cycled you're only trying to hang onto some gains, not make new gains.
You start training on a monday you do a shot saturday and start the pills too. By monday your levels are high, you've pulled some water into the muscle, and you're ready to rock from the start. That's what I'd do if I was Tre.
Why wait?

Started back recently myself and recommend you start back training first and get back to as close as you can where you used to be. The DOMS is the worst to get over from. 5 weeks to go befor I go "supernatural". ;)

Why wait?
To see if his newly found enthusiasm will last...
- Or not.

i would take the goodrum approach
1st..start competing
2nd...start AAS
3rd...start pretending to train..cause real training is hard
bench

Your friend needs a little inspiration. A little philosophical smack upside the head to get the wind back in the sails.

cycling? what is this 'cycling' thing?
cycling is like renting muscle. low dose year round my friend is the way to go, esp at your age- your in your late 30's no?
-
I'd start working out regularly for 6-8wks and then start. That way the doms is lower than the initial start and you should gain some strength and muscle naturally depending how long your layoff from training was. I don't train nov-jan annually but once I start back I gain back 10-15 lbs of muscle and strength really fast. I would love to do another cycle :-\ but I've been clean for 6yrs
-
start cycle, no training needed. ::)
-
Train first, get as big and strong as you can naturally, and then go on, but low-maintenance dose year round.

I live in the shadows in between dimensions and i "knew it" since i've seen it happen so many times. Guys want to come back get bored/frustrated and simply quit... Hope you can get through the first weeks after that it's a breeze. Good luck.
