A friend of mine (on here) can verify this one:
I had a picture of me and Ric Flair from the early 70's. It was taken by my mother for me as a child. I went with a few friends to a Nitro in about 1996. We had a line on where the wrestlers would be hanging out in Atlanta. Sure enough, we found them in the bar we thought they would be.
Ric Flair was way off in a booth with his croonies. I tried to get to him and was cut off. I told one of his marks that I had a picture I would like to get signed.
"Blah, blah bah, what is it", he said.
I showed the guy the pic and he said "oh my goodness, Nature Boy, you have to see this."
It was about 1977 and Flair looked at his best.
Flair came over and asked me about the pic and wondered why I kept it so long. I told him I would take nothing for it and he said he had to sign it.
He signed it and we talked about it for a few minutes, where it came from, why I still had it, and the like.
One of my favorite memories from my hero!!
I have a few more, but I want to hear yours.
-
I can certainly verify this story....same night that Bisch should have taken a beatin' in the restroom.... ;D
-
Gosh. I have met so many but the one that stands out for me was meeting Paul Orndorff. He was really down to earth and humble. No attitude or arrogance at all and he signed autographs for everyone around.

lehighton fairgrounds back in the day of ivan putski, when he weighed 300 plus, he was walking around the fairgrounds attracting a crowd when he saw me and came up and started talking in character he came up probably because we were dressed exaxtly the same and i resemble him somewhat only 5 ft 8 205 at the time. a big crowd gathered around us i think they thought i was his little brother.

Yes, he should have but my backup was shaky at best.
I seem to remember you might have had a chance to take out Konnan once as well? ::)

I talked to a guy at this gym once, (can't remember how the conversation started, think I was waiting for a machine he was on.) and he was training to be a wrestler here in Oz. I haven't seen him since then.
He had some interesting stories about Nathan Jones. I was hoping he'd make his mark in the WWE but we all know how that turned out.
I haven't met any wrestlers in person. I could have gone to the meet the stars when WWE did their Global Warning tour here in Melbourne, but I was pissed at spending a pile on a ticket that had them as big as ants on a stage far away.
I am enjoying all your stories here. The Flair one sounds awesome. ;D
Montague, who are the guys in the pics? :-[ (I should know but I don't recognise them)

Ivan Putski.

Ivan Putski.
Thanks. I have some research to do. Don't think I have seen Putski wrestle.
:)
Edit........... He wrestled in a tag team with Tito Santana in the WWE!!!!!!!!!!!! He may be in one of Dad's tapes.
Carry on.

Ivan played kind of a stupid character (stereotypical “dumb Polack”) early in his career.
He became more serious once joining Verne Gagne’s AWA in Minnesota.
Putski probably had his best, most successful run working for Vince’s Dad in the 70’s, and continued working for the company after Vince Jr. took over.
He was pretty much done, though, by about the mid-80’s.
Ivan worked a match with Savage at the Wrestling Classic, which was probably one of his last matches as a regular/active wrestler:

I've met John Cena a few times, this was before he was the face of the company...around 2003. Shot the shit for a few minutes with a couple of us. Nice guy. I've talked to Albert/A-train/Giant Bernard a lot, he's from the same area as I am. He's huge, I'm almost 6'3" and he makes me look like a toddler. An incredibly nice guy, he deserves all the success he's had in Japan.

Met Kevin Nash at a night club I was bouncing at. We talked about steroids and injuries-1993. Undertaker was very quiet. My brother met Ric Flair at a bar back in 1980 and said he was a real jerk. He said Snuka was cool and it was the first time he ever heard Snuka speak (NWA days).
I'm sitting in Applebee's with my wife and friend from Tampa (who see's alot of wrestlers in the clubs) And in walks Shane Helmes and Matt Hardy. I say to my wife, "Look at that dude, looks like Hardy, probably the dish washer". Then I see Shane walk in and Jeff is standing outside with his red hair. My buddy says "That aint' Hardy", and follows him into the bathroom. He walks out seconds later and says that's Matt and he has the belt in his gym bag. Well, Applebee's wouldn't serve them because it was 12am, I asked to take some photo's and told them where Denny's was. Funny thing is the people at the bar couldn't believe these guys were wrestlers and said we looked better than they did. I'm 6'4, 295lbs and my friend is 6'9 280's. Looking at the pics we did look huge next to them.lol

I saw him in a bar in Chicogo by chance a couple of years ago while I was on a business trip. He was still married to Tiffiny at the time. He had a bottle of wine and to of the hottest blonds on each shoulder. Unbelievable.

haha, at least I didn't offer him a beer..... ;D Man, he was thick stepping off of that elevator.....never expected that.

By far, the most impressive wrestler I saw in relation to what I expected. The hallway went dark when he walked out.
The least impressive was Booker T. Very narrow and not thick at all.

I met Flair quite a few times after our original meeting. Most times he was pretty cool, although possibly a little stand-offish. Late one night in a bar, he and a couple others were pretty rude to myself and a couple of friends. Of course, it was pretty late, they were pretty hammered, and we probably deserved at least some of it for aggrevating them all night.

Used to live in Tampa and alot of the wrestlers worked out in Golds on Dale Mabry
Met Jerry FLynn (not Lynn), he was a jobber but super nice guy
Horace Hogan - nice guy as well. Coincidently sat behind him and his family at a showing of wrestling movie that came out on 2000 with David Arquette. It was dark and all I hear is...look there's Daddy....lights come on and it's Horace
Met Big Show at Gold's....nice guy, kind of left him alone
Kurt Angle, also at Gold's, this was 2000. Super nice guy, we chatted at the cardio machines and took a pic when he was done
Scott Hall - back in 85, AWA days...total prick back then
Michael Hayes, also in 85, kind of stand-offish but did take pics with us
Jacqueline/Jackie who ran with Kevin Sullivan in WCW and later in WWE, tiny little thing, very sweet, chatted with my wife and I for a while, huge rack!
Rick Maretl - back in mid 80's when he was AWA Champ, decent guy, pics and autograph

Obviously not now, but how much of the heels being standoffish and pricks back in the 80's was part of kayfabe? Not saying all of it, but i think it was probably quite common during that time to carry over your inring persona in public when someone recognized you.
I remember one time Ox Baker was at our HS wrestling and he came out and was trimming his beard/waxing it sitting in the seats near the ring. Of course some kids would go up to him and he would tell them to beat it....snarl, etc.... I was scared to death of him at the time, but you know he could just have easily did what he was doing in the school locker room/bathrooms. It generated some great heat.

I have another good one to keep this thread going.
I lived in Atlanta a few years back. I worked out all over and knew quite a few bodybuilders and met numerous wrestlers. One of my good friends is a deputy back home and at the time was a total Scott Steiner mark. I saw Steiner quite a few times in Main Event and talked to him quite a bit. I figured out what he drove and got his tag number. I called my buddy and told him someone backed into me and I had his tag number. I asked if he would run it for me to figure out who it was. He said sure.
The next day he called me and said "you son of a bitch, how did you get Steiner's tag number." I told him not only did I know it but I had trained legs around him, and even worked in with him a few times. I also watched RAW with him a few times.
My buddy was beside himself.
-
Does anybody remember The Wall? He is dead now, but at the time he played a German bodyguard. He was almost seven feet tall and was a monster.
We were in Greenville SC after Nitro one night. I had a buddy with me who was a pretty big dude and fancied himself a real bad-ass, and could pretty much back it up. We are in the Marriot after the matches where all the wrestlers were.
Wall notices my buddy taking a dip and comes up and asks him what he is dipping. My buddy says Copenhagen. Wall says "I figured a man your size would be dipping Hawken" (the candy of snuff). My buddy says "I might not be as big as you, but I am pretty tough". I told him he should probably be quite. He ends up giving Wall a few dips that night.
Wall comes up to me later with two beers in his hand and says "I hate this". I asked what and he said "I can't remember which one I am drinking and whick one I am spittiing it". I told him I usually just drink the fullest one.
He looked at his two beers and said "that works for me" and turned up one!
He was a total country boy obviously.
Good times!!

haha, I remember that night. That was the same night that Tank Abbot walked into that water fountain thing on the way to the bathroom...and he was wearing the same clothes he wrestled in that night...haha..... Wall was a huge guy.... hated to hear when he died so young. Very sad.

I would go in and Raven would be on the bike. I would do my workout, sometimes including an hour of cardio and Raven would still be right there on the bike. I never saw him touch a weight, or do anything else other than that one particular bike. He would nod or smile if you made eye contact, but I never saw him talk to anyone.
Funny thing is, he never seemed to lean out. Of course, he never gassed in the ring either.

I should have taken notes of my time with Sick Boy/Scott Vick. He was a great guy and told me many backstage stories and stories from the road. I commented on one the other night in the general board about Meng being known as a bad man.
Vick was a big dude and played football in college, did some bouncing and you could just tell was not someone to be messed with, although he was one of the most friendly people I have ever met.
We were talking about tough guys one day, and he said, he might not win them all, but he was stubborn enough that he would not back down from them. Somehow Meng got brought up.
His exact words were "If Meng came at me, I would run and thank God I know that I am faster than him". I asked him why, and he said "just because".

lol...true to that! :D
They interviewed the Barbarian (meng's real life cousin) and when they asked him how tough Meng was, Barbarian just had a look on his face as if he'd seen a ghost.

Yes! I remember this! That's how strong and powerful his grip was. He yanked out Jesse Barr's eyeball too when Barr got in his face at a bar. There is another story where he was challenged by 4 security guards at a hotel once and he knocked all four of them out. The cops on site where afraid to arrest him.

I'd hazard to say that - among those who personally knew both men - more people were afraid of Haku than Andre.

That's actually true. Apparantly another real tough bad ass was none other than Allen Coach aka Bad News Alan aka Bad News Brown. Apparantely back in the day whilst riding on a bus Andre jokingly made a racial slur at Bad News and he took it to heart and told the bus driver to pull over. Bad News was also an accomplished martial artist. He then got up and got in Andre's face and personally challanged him to a fight. Andre just sat there. Afterwards Andre appoligized for the remark. True story.

Hi all, this is my first post and i hope i can contribute somewhat to this board. Ive been reading for a while now and like it enough to want to get involved in these discussions as evidently there are people here who know exactly what they are talking about, but i must say that at times there are some who sound as if they have just make a quick Google search to answer the questions.
Anyway i met Davey Boy Smith when i was 11, he made an appearance at a local show and i have to say he was very accommodating and friendly. Very densely built, something i always remember with absolute clarity as to that point i had never et anyone in real life that was as thick as him. He even changed poses to accommodate a family member asking if he could also appear in the picture and he did it without breaking his smile - remembering that this was quite late in the evening at this point. Great guy, a sad loss on a dying industry needing an injection genuine talent.

Always cool to meet someone in the industry at a young age and for them to be accomodating. Just think, all these years later and it's still a vivid memory for you. I think some stars forget that.

I was at a Nitro one night. Tank is wrestling. He jerked the curtain. Hours later, he shows up at the bar..................... ........wearing the same clothes he wrestled in. He is standing in the bar with a beer. He takes two steps back, falls in a fountain, gets up, comes out on the other side, walks back around, takes his stance and keeps on talking just like nothing ever happened.

I saw Ernest "The Cat" Miller in another thread. It reminded me of a funny story.
I was at the Show Of Strength one year. I think it was at the after party. Anyway, I spot Cat and tell my buddy about it. He is pretty full by this time and starts marking and wanting to talk to him.
He goes up to him and Cat is pretty cool. I think he was happy somebody knew who he was. At least I thought that at first. My buddy starts wanting a picture with him and Cat declines. He keeps on and finally Cat tells him he can get a picture if he will go tell this girl The Cat wants to talk to her.
My buddy marches over and tells her, goes back and gets his picture.
A few minutes later, Cat leaves with her, and does not return.

Broads just want to bang him because of his status. He actually got divorced in 1986 because he told the camera audience that after his match, he and the horsement were going to stay at the Marriot across the street from the arena and all women who were aged 18-29 were invited. There was a line wrapping around the corner.

I belive he's also a major contributor in funding that pro show that Manion's kid does in Oakland, PA every Spring.
Allegedly, when Angle was arrested in Starbucks with the hGH in his car, he was delivering to Dave Hawk's clients who were competing in the Pittsburgh Pro.
WTF would you get Kurt, of all people, to make that delivery? :-\

I'm sure he pulled when he was a young man. But everyone read that article about Flairs failed life about his finances and divorces. I cannot believe that any of the Divas had anything to do with this beat down old man. Woooooooooooooooooooooo
LOL!!!
I definitely see where you're coming from, but remember two things:
1.) Many hot chicks are attracted to fukk-up losers.
2.) Just as Bill Clinton wasn't Brad Pitt, many chicks banged him for the story. Also, there are probably some whack-job guys who would be "proud" to say that Ric Flair pounded their girl.

I went to college in the midwest on wrestling scholarship. While i was there i dated a local waitress at a strip club. When the wrestlers were in town they always came in after the event. She calls me up and says there are these huge guys in the club and they are all crazy. I show up and its, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Xpac and Shawn Michaels. This was right before Hall and Nash moved to WCW. Nash was quiet and mostly kept to himself. Shawn Michaels was all over the club, practically bouncing off the walls, wearing a tank top and sweating constantly. Scott Hall refused to break character and acted like Razor Ramon all night, always saying he was going to give someone a "knuckle sandwich" and following the girls all over the club lol. He and Xpac got sloppy drunk and acted like fools all night.
I did manage to talk to Nash for a bout thirty minutes at his table. He was really cool and answered every question i asked. He was huge in person, legit 7ft. I'm 6'2 at felt small even being next to him. He said the reason he was being quiet and not drinking much was because he was always has to be the babysitter for the other guys!

I've heard more than a few stories that Hall is/can be somewhat of a prick.
By all accounts, Hall, Kid, and HBK were always pegged as the "sloshes," with Nash & Hunter often carrying one or all of them back to their rooms after a night of "partying."
Supposedly, Nash developed a bit of an ego - especially after his brief title run, but he's usually been good with the fans.
I think, too, that a lot depends on how people approach him.
It sounds like you weren't the pestering mark/smark who was persistently ruining the guy's night.
That was quite common for wrestlers at that time.
I've also listened to Nash talk in interviews outside of wrestling; he sounds quite intelligent and well-spoken.

When I was a teenager I was in the locker room at a WCW event,my brother asked Nash for a pic and he wouldn't do it, then he was talking to my dad and realized we were his kids and then wanted to take the picture with us. He came off as a real jerk.

Great find!!! Interesting how everyone has the same comments as us here on the board as to why wrestling stinks nowadays.
No gimmicks, squash matches, feud build-ups
Also Patera seems like a really good guy...

I remember being so involved that when Jake Roberts was sprayed in the face by Rock Martel i was genuinely concerned for him (the blindfold match was a brilliant concept as a result!). Same when Savage was bitten by the snake, brilliant TV and one hell of an emotional rollercoaster but everyone is injured so often these days and in the most ridiculous ways that nobody really cares.
