In all seriously, there were quite a few people who have posted on the boards that have been in the armed services. Some of them have privately emailed me on them leaving the states to go overseas.
Much respect to all of them who have served our country.

Me.
Panzergrenadier Stetten am Kalten Market (Black Forest)
Great time of my life and learned a thing or two.
I am quite proud to have served as a Panzergreandier - not elite by any means but also not very normal - Infantry schocktroops.

Zehn tage schon in tobender Schlacht, zum rasten blieb keine zeit,
Wir gehn nach vorn wir gehn sterben bis die letzte Festung faelt.
Treu sein mein Madel das merke dir einmal kehren wir heim,
Denke and deinen Panzergrenadier dann kannst du stolz auf us sein.

Stark, is military service still mandatory in Germany? I remember when I was there during fest season when a guys hitch was over, he would just get obliterated drunk and stagger around......we always bought them a beer.

The Guys are called Ausscheider - I never did that whole Auscheider thing of going around in town drunk to the gills and all that stuff - I found that behavior always real fucking
disgusting.
In regards to your question of the mandatory service in Germany:
No it just has been discontinued a few month ago.

What are your thoughts on that from a perspective of serving and living in Germany?

Given in the times we live it makes no sense, you have effectively people in the army for 7 month (not counting 30 days of holidays) - whats the point, most of them have
no interest in the military and simply look for the easiest and trouble free way to pass the 7 month.
On the other hand having a full time professional army only makes sense - its reducing cost - you have motivated Soldiers who actually want to serve their country and have an
actual interest in being a soldier.
However on the other hand I know that apart from the whole bullshit that comes attached with serving the army for a short time - most of it was a lot of fun.
And I know a lot of others thought the same way - the paradox is - when you're in you cannot wait to get out - than you're out and you start missing it.
I joined the army as a complete crazy unresponsible fucked up young man and I came out not completely changed but with a lot more sense of pride and also much more grown up.
I think in todays times there are a lot of young people that need a bitter wakeup call.

Great post. Sounds like mine and your experience were a lot alike. I've always felt that there is a certain experience the military gives someone that can't be duplicated elsewhere. Not saying everybody who served is "kickass" but gernerally when you meet someone who has, there is a certain level of undestanding. There is such a lack of discipline among American youth that most couldn't even survive the 7 months without melting down. Sad but true.
-
BTW Why countries like Germany, GB, Romania, Sweden etc. even bother to have army? It's just extra expense running all year round, year after year.
I understand that countries like USA and Russia have huge military and they even use them occasionally... (well, USA uses it constantly ;D )
They have interests all around the world and power to do something but what for example Sweden does with army... it's a joke anyway.
And don't come and say that those countries would be occupied in a week if they let their armies go. Nope, they wouldn't. In modern world there are such a huge economical dependencies that no developed country wants any armed conflicts to interrupt the system. And those countries would anyway be wiped off from the earth if superpowers would choose so....

Much respect and gratitude for those who have served in the Military. Some who have never experienced war and enjoy freedom take our Military (past and present) for granted.
Thank you all for your service and God bless.
