Title: RIP Jack Lalanne :((
Post by: Coach is Back! on January 23, 2011, 06:48:28 PM
SUCKS

LOS ANGELES • Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday. He was 96.

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

LaLanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said.

"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne, LaLanne's wife of 51 years and a frequent partner in his television appearances, said in a written statement.

He maintained a youthful physique and joked in 2006 that "I can't afford to die. It would wreck my image."

Former "Price is Right" host Bob Barker credited LaLanne's encouragement with helping him to start exercising often.

"He never lost enthusiasm for life and physical fitness," the 87-year-old Barker told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I saw him in about 2007 and he still looked remarkably good. He still looked like the same enthusiastic guy that he always was."

LaLanne (pronounced lah-LAYN') credited a sudden interest in fitness with transforming his life as a teen, and he worked tirelessly over the next eight decades to transform others' lives, too.

"The only way you can hurt the body is not use it," LaLanne said. "Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it's never too late."

His workout show was a television staple from the 1950s to the '70s. LaLanne and his dog Happy encouraged kids to wake their mothers and drag them in front of the television set. He developed exercises that used no special equipment, just a chair and a towel.

He also founded a chain of fitness studios that bore his name and in recent years touted the value of raw fruit and vegetables as he helped market a machine called Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer.

When he turned 43 in 1957, he performed more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes on the "You Asked For It" television show. At 60, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco — handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat. Ten years later, he performed a similar feat in Long Beach harbor.

"I never think of my age, never," LaLanne said in 1990. "I could be 20 or 100. I never think about it, I'm just me. Look at Bob Hope, George Burns. They're more productive than they've ever been in their whole lives right now."

Fellow bodybuilder and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger credited LaLanne with taking exercise out of the gymnasium and into living rooms.

"He laid the groundwork for others to have exercise programs, and now it has bloomed from that black and white program into a very colorful enterprise," Schwarzenegger said in 1990.

In 1936 in his native Oakland, LaLanne opened a health studio that included weight-training for women and athletes. Those were revolutionary notions at the time, because of the theory that weight training made an athlete slow and "muscle bound" and made a woman look masculine.

"You have to understand that it was absolutely forbidden in those days for athletes to use weights," he once said. "It just wasn't done. We had athletes who used to sneak into the studio to work out.

"It was the same with women. Back then, women weren't supposed to use weights. I guess I was a pioneer," LaLanne said.

The son of poor French immigrants, he was born in 1914 and grew up to become a sugar addict, he said.

The turning point occurred one night when he heard a lecture by pioneering nutritionist Paul Bragg, who advocated the benefits of brown rice, whole wheat and a vegetarian diet.

"He got me so enthused," LaLanne said. "After the lecture I went to his dressing room and spent an hour and a half with him. He said, 'Jack, you're a walking garbage can.'"

Soon after, LaLanne constructed a makeshift gym in his back yard. "I had all these firemen and police working out there and I kind of used them as guinea pigs," he said.

He said his own daily routine usually consisted of two hours of weightlifting and an hour in the swimming pool.

"It's a lifestyle, it's something you do the rest of your life," LaLanne said. "How long are you going to keep breathing? How long do you keep eating? You just do it."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.

(CNN) -- American fitness guru Jack LaLanne died Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay, California, according to his long-time agent, Rick Hersh. He was 96.

The cause, said Hersh, was respiratory failure due to pneumonia. LaLanne had been ill for the past week. His wife, Elaine, was at his side, along with his family and friends, Hersh said. No funeral arrangements were announced, but his agent said plans were being made.

LaLanne spent decades talking about the healthful benefits of exercise and fitness. He opened his own health spa in California in 1936, years before the fitness craze swept the United States. LaLanne even designed the world's first leg-extension machine, along with several other pieces of fitness equipment now standard in the fitness industry.

He was born in San Francisco on September 26, 1914. A self-confessed sugar- and junk-food addict as a child, he went on to study bodybuilding and weight-lifting by the time he was in his late teens.

From the 1950s through the 1980s, LaLanne performed multiple feats of strength and endurance. His first such stunt was an underwater swim the length of the Golden Gate Bridge, loaded with 140 pounds of equipment, in 1954. He went on to stage many attention-getting events, including completing over a thousand pushups in a little over 20 minutes, and towing 65 boats filled with thousands of pounds of wood pulp in Japan.

LaLanne had his own workout program, "The Jack LaLanne Show." First broadcast nationally in 1959, the show went on to run for three decades.

In his later years, he was easily recognized because of late-night infomercials on on the benefits of juicing.

He also made many appearances on CNN's "Larry King Live" and was a friend of the talk show host. "There was no one like Jack LaLanne," King said Sunday night. "He would go on forever ... a true guru. I guess Charles Atlas from the old comic books would be the predecessor for Jack LaLanne."

But it wasn't simply LaLanne's physical prowess that impressed King. "Elderly people were encouraged by him because he just kept on going," King said, adding that modern fitness celebrities owe a debt of gratitude to the original impresario of exercise.

LaLanne's wife of 51 years released a statement on her husband's passing: "I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine said.

RIP - and I am pretty sure that at the Los Angeles Fit Expo, they will be giving him a tribute or more.

Whereas others in their late age don't do much, this guy still made everyone laugh, smile and feel good about working out

Extremely crowded conditions, poor ventilation, and filth in factory farms cause such rampant disease in pigs that 70 percent of them have pneumonia by the time they're sent to the slaughterhouse. In order to keep pigs alive in conditions that would otherwise kill them and to promote unnaturally fast growth, the industry keeps pigs on a steady diet of the antibiotics that we depend on to treat human illnesses. This overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of "superbacteria," or antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. The ham, bacon, and sausage that you're eating may make the drugs that your doctor prescribes the next time you get sick completely ineffective.

dont eat meat RIP to meat eaters

In order to keep pigs alive in conditions that would otherwise kill them and to promote unnaturally fast growth, the industry keeps pigs on a steady diet of the antibiotics that we depend on to treat human illnesses. This overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of "superbacteria," or antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. The ham, bacon, and sausage that you're eating may make the drugs that your doctor prescribes the next time you get sick completely ineffective.

dont eat meat RIP to meat eaters

i know many meat eaters claim that cooking solves the problem but all its doing is cooking sickness  and more likely creating more free radicals. if you dont eat cooked human flesh as an everyday meat why eat cooked animal

many of these animals are in horrible condition and are all kinds of sick just think of all the bad shit that is flowing through there bodies and you are eating it!

pneumonia? i thought a person only gets pneumonia if their out in the cold, and get a cold and it progresses to pneumonia? or they catch it from someone else? i wouldn't think jack would be out somewhere in the cold in california or be around someone with the pneumonia?

how easy can one catch it? of course at 96 years old pneumonia is very, very dangerous!

96 is a good long life, however, more and more i think health and life longevitiy has a huge amount due to genetics and hereditary!

i mean george burns lived to be 100 and he smoked 24/7 for decades, nor did he eat right or exercise and he outlives jack?

steve reeves passed at only age 74 from lymphoma and was the epitome of health and wellness for decades too!

Hello Bay. Reading through the LaLane thread I wanted to ask for someone to post those exact 2 pictures. Why are people so blind and ignore the real true picture? I think you will be hard pressed to find straight guys in this industry. I mean everything bb related revolves around gay erotica don't you think? Even on the boards I think there are so many that suppress their feelings. Truth is definitely hard to handle ... BTW this is not a rip on LaLane but an acknowledgement of what this industry really is.

All things aside, I am happy for Jack.  He lived a long, successful and happy life.  The man had fame, money, health, great friends, a loving wife and a jealous boyfriend.

It's only gay if you want it to be.

There's nothing wrong with a man masturbating in the privacy of his own home.  It wasn't as if another man was doing it for you.

The fact that you masturbated to a picture that includes Jack Lalanne nude is no more gayer than a straight guy masturbating to a "straight" porn video where they have a naked woman, along with a naked man, sporting a diamond-cutting hard on while getting his penis serviced in closeup view.

Nothing gay about either scenarios..

Am I right or wrong?

You have a nude woman giving a blowjob and while she is doing it, it is displayed as a closeup, so all you see is a magnificent 6-inch penis getting serviced right in your face.  Sure, while she is doing it, she is staring deep into the camera, but it doesn't take away from the fact that you're essentially staring at another man's penis as it gets serviced and ultimately spills it's seed..

No folks, nothing gay about that...
"1"

P.S.  The mere fact that a man can get a solid erection while seeing another man naked with a hard on, even if within a straight porn, leads to questions that beg to be answered..

Congratulations on connecting… the… dots…  You are smarter than the average getbigger.  Guys objecting to those photos might want to ask themselves why Jack (or any man) would choose to take photos like that.  Notice that they are not once-in-a-lifetime spontaneous or candid camera type photos.  Jack obviously posed for them and enjoyed doing so.  He was not coerced and he certainly did not do it for the money.  So what is the story?

I cannot pretend to answer that question, but it should be clear by now that a lot of guys in the bodybuilding/fitness world are not as black and white about their sexuality as many posters here want to believe.  Contrary to conventional wisdom, men do not pump up their bodies with huge muscles to gain the attention of women—they do it to gain the attention of men.  Sometimes (but not always) this attention is explicitly sexualized but on the other end of the spectrum it can be an effort at validation or similar efforts at peacocking.

I can think of several bodybuilders (some pros) who cultivate the attention of men (even gay men) yet they are “straight” and some even married.  Some of these guys physically engage with their male fans (sex, wrestle, etc).  Some of their women are OK with this while others are not.  Just look at the sampling of guys on musclegallery.com; at the very least those guys are willing to pose for photos sold to men—though some are conflicted enough to deny it.

As someone else has said, Jack had it all: good health, wealth, women, men, and the adoration of millions.  I admire him! 8)

Pose in peace old friend!

Dude, you are just being disrespectful. Stop gaying up everything to make your statement that bodybuilding is gay. Using a man's death to make a statement is downright callous. Shame on you.

You think it's ok to post a picture of LaLane naked with another men in an eulogy thread in homage of him? Of course you do. After all, you are the fag who said that:

"Getting fucked is like receiving a deep tissue massage, only that it's inside your asshole."

But I am intellectually superior to you. And I don't take it up the ass, which further makes me better than you. :)

Bay, every time you post THE BEEF respects you more.

Can you comment on Vince Gironda and Ed Connors? What does Ed get out of " Helping  " all these young guys & was Vince ever linked to the outher side?

I'm also curious about Gironda. Back in the day, I asked beefyheavyweight about Arthur Jones in one of his threads, and he said that AJ wasn't gay, but dat he did have a thing for teenage girls, and that he liked to watch bodybuilders sex his young wife ;D

I remember seeing him many years ago when he was still quite old, he was doing diamond pushups but he has his hands extended all the way above his head.  Pretty damn impressive.
