Title: So lets compare Europe and the USA
Post by: Stark on January 25, 2011, 08:17:05 AM
Well I hear that shit a lot recently - its age old shit my dick is bigger than yours, we have the power you don't, we are better.
Childish comes to mind.
Right of the bat - Europe isn't a country, there are differences, so if you talk about EUROPE you are talking about somewhat around 27 (twenty seven) different countries,
all with different histories etc.

Saying Europe sucks is as intelligent as to say America sucks - and than pointing out that there is a problem in Mexico and the South of America.

But for the argument sake lets just boil it down to two words to describe why people might want to visit the USA or any country in the EU - Two words.

USA: Bombastic
Europe: Culture

That's it - simple shit.

USA had to save some European tail, because another European country (only 1) got out of hand=Europe forever in American's debt.

You listen to our music (culture), wear our clothes (culture) and discuss our politics (part of culture)=preoccupation of America=pwned

European clothing is far superior.

I think talking about the fashion capitols in Europe defining in many cases the new black on a global scale is going a little above Parkers intellect, but he means of course to point out
that the USA is a general trendsetter or has been in many occasions.

Its true...some dumbass Americans think that in Canada we live in Igloos. That's how distant and stupid some of them especially down south are. When I go to Florida and they ask me how the weather is in Toronto, I have to tell them we get the same weather as Boston, NY and Providence because if I don't, they give me a retard expression. Brutal shit.

Lol this kind of crap is why I hate american's. you guys pretend like everything about you is uniquely american, when the truth is very little is. Most of what you think is so great, usually has a canadian//european factor that can't be ignored.

Simple examples Terminator movies great american culture, except the main actor is austrian, and director/producer is canadian. \
Titanic canadian director mostly british cast.
Avatar aussie main actor, canadian director.
I could do this all day. So much Americana, is really just part of global culture, you have very few things that are independently american.

The only truely american thing is Black culture, but again, it's an seperate segment of society that many americans have major issues with.

On top of that you have a habbit of calling things like rocknroll american, while it origins may be with blacks, by the time whites got around to stealing it,  brits were doing it too.

Than you talk about inventions technology, and all that, than you love to ignore that Warner Von Brown(Make rocketry/nasa) Einstein, and Enrico Fermi(made nuclear a reality), were all from europe.

When a man as wise and intelligent as parker puts the "Oh yeah, we went to world war 2 to kill the scum from invading you" example, it just indicates how stupid americans are in general.

I mean parker is one of the most insigthfull posters here from psychedelic trips to meditation to asses... but even he used the "YEAH but who saved the mothafucken DAY 50 years ago, biaaatch, dats right!" example to "prove" america is the greatest  ::)

What point did I prove?

How the fuck did America come to where it is now? i have nothing against Europeans, but ya'll (as in many Euro countries) act all stuck up, like a country hick can't beat Michael Schuey
America has always acted like it had a chip on it's shoulder every since a bunch of rich people across the Atlantic in Great Britain in red coats wanted to tell them how to run shit over here, yet tax them on everything.

Americans (the rich ones) said Fuck that...and so there has been this "Oh the audacity!" type of mentality...because we ain't proper...and that is what pisses Europeans (many Europeans) off, we don't do things YOUR way.

Furthermore Stark, the Romans considered the german tribes and ethnic groups to be barbarians---barbarians that ended up effing the Romans up...who'd have thought that these Barbarians would have been the efficient Germans of today? Works both ways....
Lol this kind of crap is why I hate american's. you guys pretend like everything about you is uniquely american, when the truth is very little is. Most of what you think is so great, usually has a canadian//european factor that can't be ignored.

Learn how to read and comprehend first, Mr the pituitary has nothing to do with GH,

I sad nothing about pretending to be uniquely American...nothing at all.

Define culture, look it up, and you'll see that there is unique American culture, and depending on the area subcultures as well.

Americans are Europeans, the differences are insignificant.
The obvious, but this goes back to the good old cliche, of "the west".

The only real difference is that for a time europe was smart enough to stay away from oversized governments. But that's going to shit so your all fucked.
But this is why countries like norway canada, aus, kick ass, were the same thing except we don't got some prick in brussels/washington, fucking with us everytime he has an idea.

Oversized governments are all over Europe and at least where I live, have been since WWII.

Most differences are blown out of proportion IMO. As soon as people actually meet, they often discover that all cliches are wrong.

To call euro's stuck up about america is a joke. The simple fact that you don't get why the rest of the world hates you is the problems. It's not even hate, it's resentment, as you don't bother to learn geography, your completely ungrateful and have no understanding where the things you have came from,  your pop culture/mega corporations are destroying the world, you have no idea where you place in terms of GDP/Poverty/Education/ etc all the important stuff, your beyond ignorant on understanding how population skews EVERYTHING in your favour, and to top it all you group 50+ countries as one place, when nothing could be further from the truth.

America's the greatest country in the world.
We got democracy and freedom, would you rather live in Iran.
Sure we got loads of poor people but would you rather live in sudan.
In our history we may have been racist as shit, but fuck the nazi's are worst.
We lack public healthcare, but would you rather be like France?

Actually, Americans welcome it. People come here from other countries and tell us what our problems are---we admit it...and then we ask why are they here (if they are living here)...

It's funny to see a English dude complain about how Americans like everything big, then he gets into his big Ford Expedition or Excursion (google what that behemoth looks like), and talk about going to Texas or some state with Wide, Open, Space.

It's funny how a Iraqi can talk about "back in my country" and "you Americans", yet he gets in a Mercedes Benz S class, that couldn't afford in Iraq.

America and Americans welcome criticism---we have to, it comes with the territory, and it comes with free speech.

But, the paradox, is that we are truly not accepting of truth within, we have become a nation that resembles a orange---semi tough outer, very weak layer, then layers and layers of very, very weak "individual" packets.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha hah

well, I cant speak for IRL americans.

but the 5+ years on american forums I would have to disagree insanly mucho. Immature would to me be the best explination.

you cant even take it from americans.. Ron paul is a good example no?

Anyway the content in these thread are alot more entertaining then the subject thats been done a million times.

Lol epic Getbig defense, I'm only kidding, it's just a joke, don't be so serious(even if your right), lol and to top it off some more of your pseudo theories you got from Oprah.

Oprah does bookclubs, gives away cars---Dr. Phil does the other stuff...
you tend to mix and match pseudo facts with fiction
hahahahahahahahahahahahahah

well, I cant speak for IRL americans.

but the 5+ years on american forums I would have to Dissagree insanly mucho.
IRL, man, Swede people say a lot shit to your face,
I was talking to a guy who served in Iraq and he was telling me of how the Brits were calling the Americans (not soldiers) but America stupid for the whole "economic" meltdown...he (the Am soldier) was quick to point out the richest man in the UK is Indian and that Jag and Land Rover are owned by India's Tata, Lotus is owned my a Malayasian company.

Over here we constantly have to hear of various Latinos of diff nationalities tell us "back in my country"
Constant criticism from various people face to face of America's problems---but these people are making a killing over here vs if they were in their other countries...we admit our faults, nod our heads and keep it moving.
And, it's funny because of our 1st admendment right, people grow balls over here and start speaking out on everything.

What I think you are seeing, Swede, is that this is a American website, and not in IRL, so people tend to be more tense, more wound up, and people are less "nice".

We lack public healthcare, but would you rather be like France?
Over all America, may not be perfect, but there can't possibly be anywhere better, no way it's impossible, America's the gratest.

Having had the opportunity to extensively travel America and even live there during an exchange program, my heart still lives in Europe. There's something about smoky platforms, exotic destinations surrounded by tens of different tongues spoken by European girls with liberal morals that calls me home every time. I like America for the fact that you have deserts, snow, greenery, flatlands, you have everything. So many different things yet all the same. All and all, two great places to live.

Yep, have you talked to any convicts or homeless people?
I deal with criminals on the daily, and to some going to jail or prison means, three hots and cot, and weights and they don't have to pay for any of it. Same thing for homeless people. Some will commit crimes during very cold spells to be arrested so that they can go to jail and have a hot meal and a bed to lay their head on. Then there are those who prefer to be homeless because they have no obligations, no bills, and no mortgage.

Now as was stated, these are some folks, but there are more of these types than you think.

pretty futile topic as it is so broad that everybody can pick and choose examples to make any point they want.

For example the cultural differences between Paris and New York are smaller than between Paris and the North of France or between New York and rural Utah.

One interesting observation though is that Americans tend to copy good ideas from Europe while Europeans tend to copy bad ideas from America - which is smarter ?  The only really bad European idea America copied is reality shows (but then that could be Europe's revenge for the soap opera...)

"Precedents for television that portrayed people in unscripted situations began in the 1940s. Debuting in 1948, Allen Funt's Candid Camera, (based on his previous 1947 radio show, Candid Microphone), broadcast unsuspecting ordinary people reacting to pranks. Hard to say, I would guess there have been some sorts of reality shows on both sides of the pond since the late 40ies or early 50ies, but what I meant was that the really embarrassingly annoying concepts all come from the same producer in Holland (Endemol). The US Big Brother sucks, it's like 1st grade... or middle school...of course nudity is not allowed and even snuggling is a "big deal', but most of the reality shows are annoying, distracting, and i feel like my brain goes numb after i watch any of it, especially Real Housewives of Atlanta

Of course some people like the "harder" life style. But if there truly is more these kind of people in the US than elsewhere, what does it tell about your system? That people are too afraid to buy a house and much rather sleep under the open sky? No matter what, the stats aren't positive on your part.

They way i see it, every state has it's great places to be and then some shit holes. Same goes for country's. I find it hilarious that everone see Detroit as a shit hole and then there are some parts of Detroit that are great.  ;) I find Southern California to be the same way as Detroit.  ;)

The answer is far above my pay grade. Due to the fact that there are a myriad of diff reasons and issues. You have the social issue, the judicial system, the economic and business side (building and staffing jails are a big business), and the mental issue. The fact that jails are supposedly "correctional facilities" and that they are not really correcting anything, and many times the people are worse when they come out or have no skills (due to taking classes, etc out---the prisoners using them to be better criminals), you have a convoluted situation. There are literally thousands of people who cannot be rehabilitated...they'd kill you and your kid like they were breathing. Because they don't care, a totally diff mentality.

As far as the homeless go, there was a homeless lady where I work, she is only there during the summer months, her daughter works in the same building. Her daugther tried to help her, but the lady refuses to take her meds for a mental disorder (another reason many are homeless), and there was a fight---so she got put out the house. Some people just flat refuse to go by the rules and others become down on their luck.

Another example, I knew of a woman who worked for the federal government, she lost her job and then got depressed, lost her house, but is too proud to ask for help...so she lives in a tent, and come tax time, she uses the local public library as her office and does people's taxes.

I've lived UK, Knoxville, Tennessee, Copenhagen, Breda (Netherlands), Tokyo & Thailand.

I've spent probably a year in LA as I've been travelling there every multiple times per year for the past 13 years, sometimes for a month at a time. I've been to New Orleans, Dallas, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte, San Diego, San Francisco - I think that covers it.

The US is not a single culture in my opinion. Knoxville, New Orleans and LA could be different countries. Drive from UK -> France -> Belgium -> Netherlands and you'll see the same kind of differences you see between US States.

The line 'greatest country in the world' I find odd. For sure, I didn't find the US and greater than say - living in Denmark or Netherlands.  I am not sure in which respects it is supposed to be so much better.

The stuff about freedom too, I find odd. I certainly had more freedoms in The Netherlands, although it is true that I couldn't carry a gun. Of course, the flip side of this is that the US police are very heavy-handed. I barely saw any police when I was in Copenhagen. I guess with the prevelance of firearms, the police in the US need to be 'tougher'. I can't imagine what it would take to be a cop in New Orleans or Compton. Still, I do remember quite vividly going to watch the freak show in West Hollywood one Halloween.  At about 1am, at one end of the street, a line of police cars formed and started moving down the street with the bullhorns announcing that anyone that didn't clear the streets right then would be arrested. It was very aggressive - as if they wanted to cause trouble and it totally changed the atmosphere from fun to fear.

Of course the US is more free than Iran but so is Spain. Being more free than Iran doesn't exactly make you stand out, does it?

So basically, I see few differences. Perhaps someone from the US side could define 'greatest' and 'free-est' country...
