Title: Is exercise bad for your health?
Post by: Firemuscle on January 29, 2011, 07:00:10 PM
A few days ago I met some people in a bar and we started chatting about working out at some point. One of the guys said that he believes exercise is bad for your health. He said that relaxation and treating your body gently is the key to health. So because of that the only exercise he does is meditation and yoga.

I'm starting to think this might be true. We've all been told that if we run or lift weights and get our heart racing that this will make us more healthy. But maybe this is fucking us up? Maybe it's better to just meditate, relax and not push our bodies?

It makes sense to me. Is it reall healthy to push our bodies hard and make our hearts race? Doesn't seem like it.

Is exercise bad for your health?

At one point, it becomes. Exercise is stress that damages the body, but the body defends itself by improving several physiological functions to cope with the stress. But the capacity to adapt to the stress is limited and it reaches a point where it starts to do more harm than good. Running 20 miles a week is good for your heart, but running 20 miles every day increases your risk of cancer and accelerates your ageing because it creates more free radicals than your body can deal with.

Exercise isn't bad for your health, but bodybuilding is.

I read in a Yoga book recently that anything that puts strain on your body is unhealthy. Including heavy lifting and running and stuff like that. Basically, the theory is that if you get into an agitated state where your heart is beating quickly then that is generally unhealthy. Even if you don't overdo it.

So that's why many Yogis will spend their time meditating and doing gentle excercises like Asanas.

I'm starting to think that this theory is probably true.

Moderation in all things is the key...balance, equalibrium, homeostasis, zen...except muscle enhancing "supplements" of course... ;D

No, it's not bad for your health, unless you do to much of it. I'd say anymore than 1 hour of HARD EXERCISE is about the max that the body can handle before it becomes "bad"

It does put a stress on your body, but that's a good thing (within limits), since it makes your body stronger for it.

It's one step backward, 2 steps forward kinda thing.

This is all assuming you aren't just trolling with this thread, which I wouldn't put past you ;D

Lots of people i've been talking to lately say that only gentle exercise is good for the body.

Anything really intense or extreme is bad for your health.

I was just throwing it out as food for thought. I'm not a health nut so i'm just gonna keep on doing my thing.

Heres just a few of the things exercise can do for you.

1. Lower your resting heart rate that shows your heart is stronger and more efficient.

2. Lower your blood pressure.

3. Change the ratios of hdl to ldls.

4. Lower blood sugar.

5. Lower deadly visceral fat.

6. Make your bones stronger

7. Increase lean body mass that will increase calories burnt at rest.

8. Improve you mood so it fights depression.

9. Increase balance so injury potential is decreased.

10.  Improve circulation so the instances of impotency is decreased.

11.  Blood fats are decreased; triglycerides

12. cholesterol in some cases can be decreased by lowering viseral fat.

I could go on.  You can cancel all this if you use steroids, HGH, speed, insulin and oil injections.  Another point that defies logic is when someone says how about that guy running a marathon that died with a heart attack or some other athlete.  The point is that for the overwhelming majority exercise will improve health.  It's like saying my grandpa smoked and drank everyday but lived to be 85. Genetics is important.

Good post oldtimer, what interests me, is how much exercise is enough for good health, and how much is too much? And within that context, you also need to factor in hard training vs. moderate to easy training, and of course hard training is much more stressful to the body, but the thing is this hard training is what gives one the best results.

lowest possible metabolism is shown to extend life throughout biology.

sleep little, eat little and exert as little energy as possible is probably optimal for life extension and health, i.e. spend your life posting on getbig,  but it might become boring?

A recent study shows lifting weight lowers blood pressure for up to 40 minutes after exercise and it increases blood flow to the active muscles in the limbs.
