God damn I hate the American tax system.

Pain in the ass all the way.

Just like everything else in the US, there's tons of bureacracy and people getting fucked over left and right.

Mister Magoo once tried a similar argument - said he wasn't really gay, since he only likes guys who are hot.

Why do you feel lucky? It was always your money to begin with. It just means that government has been holding it for almost a year whereas it should have been in your pocket collecting interest, invested or spent by you.

Please if nothing else remember this: the government can't give you anything simply because they have nothing to give. What they give to one person they have taken from someone else.

The government didn't give you any money in that refund check. They simply are "allowing" you to keep a bit more of the money that they confiscated from you during the year that YOU YOURSELF earned.

Spot on.

It's not much money you MAKE. It's how much money you KEEP.

Wise words pellius but considering the majority of Americans don't have the discipline or ability to save, refund checks are like a 'bonus' to them/us.  It's easy to spend $4 a day on coffee rather than saving that money but it adds up quick.

my dad always taught me exactly what you said.  the reason it is so much is that most of it is for the $8,000 first time home buyer incentive and most of the rest is educational credits i receive for paying tuition out of pocket.  so in this rare instance i am actually getting money that was not witheld.  without either of those two i would actually have to pay close to $1,000.

excellent advice tho..

Congrats, you just gave the government a $9,000+ interest free loan. . . . .

Sure is better than collecting interest yourself on that money.  Oh wait. . .

Sure is better to adjust the amount of taxes you are paying throughout the year than to have uncle Sam use your money the way they want. I have less taken out each month which gives me a higher amount I get each month and really don't get a return at the end of the year. Which is fine with me. I know how to use my money a lot better than any government agency.

Only a homo would block out 2 hours of everyday and one full day to not want to slam vagina.  That leaves you with 14 hours over the week, and one entire day of doing what you really love, and that's licking sweaty ballsacks while dreaming of Josh Hartnett.

This is it right here. Right damn here. The one who had to actually earn their wealth will for the most part always spend it better than the one who gets to spend other people's money. Even a high school drop out drug addict will instinctively seek out, price compare and bargain for their next fix.

X1000.

I finally, over the past 4 years, adjusted my withholdings and had the money directly deposited into a separate savings account. Never touch it and I still get a little back each tax season. Fuck letting that money sit with Uncle Sam and wait a year for it. It is my money and I wanted it in my bi-weekly check to save and earn me a few extra bucks. You just gotta be disciplined when it comes to finances.
