I've just left the presidential palace in Cairo where I sat down for an exclusive 30-minute interview with President Hosni Mubarak.
Watch: Egyptian Revolts: Caught in the Middle of ChaosHe told me that he is troubled by the violence we have seen in Tahrir Square over the last few days but that his government is not responsible for it. Instead, he blamed the Muslim Brotherhood, a banned political party here in Egypt.
Tune in for a special one-hour "Nightline" with ABC News' Christiane Amanpour reporting from Cairo TONIGHT at 11:35 p.m. ET.
He said he's fed up with being president and would like to leave office now, but cannot, he says, for fear that the country would sink into chaos.
I asked President Mubarak about the violence that his supporters launched against the anti-government protestors in Liberation Square.
He told me, "I was very unhappy about yesterday. I do not want to see Egyptians fighting each other."

When I asked him what he thought seeing the people shouting insults about him and wanting him gone, he said, "I don't care what people say about me. Right now I care about my country, I care about Egypt."
I asked how he felt after giving the speech Monday night, saying he would not run for president again, and he told me he felt relief.
For now, Mubarak remains in the presidential palace with his family, heavily guarded by armed troops, tanks and barbed wire. We were joined by his son Gamal, who was once widely considered to be his successor. Mubarak told me it was never his intention to have his son follow him into office.
And he pledged his loyalty to Egypt. "I would never run away," he said, "I will die on this soil." He also defended his legacy, recounting the many years he has spent leading his country.
While he described President Obama as a very good man, he wavered when I asked him if he felt the U.S. had betrayed him. When I asked him how he responded to the United States' veiled calls for him to step aside sooner rather than later, he said he told President Obama, "You don't understand the Egyptian culture and what would happen if I step down now."
He told me, "I never intended to run again. I never intended Gamal to be President after me."

What are your thoughts mal? I have always believed that the US should get involved in such things, so far as how it affects us in the long-term. It's not the PC answer, but we live in a world where being "nice" gets you what we had under Carter. No respect, no pride and not even enough ballsack juice to take out a group of militant students holding US citizens hostage for a year.
And there is no "democracy" in the middle east.....none. Very sad, but with a region that has such an impact on global economics, we have to be involved in some way.
I would prefer to see us become 100 % energy independent, monitor them and nuke when appropriate ;D, and just let them kill each other off.....shouldn't take more than a 100 yrs or so.

In a testy personal telephone call on Jan. 29, Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah reportedly told President Obama not to humiliate Mubarak and warned that he would step in to bankroll Egypt if the U.S. withdrew its aid program, worth $1.5 billion annually.
America's closest ally in the Gulf made clear that the Egyptian president must be allowed to stay on to oversee the transition towards peaceful democracy and then leave with dignity.
"Mubarak and King Abdullah are not just allies, they are close friends, and the King is not about to see his friend cast aside and humiliated," a senior source in the Saudi capital told The Times.
Two sources confirmed details of the King's call, made four days after the people of Egypt took to the streets.
The revelation of Saudi concerns sheds new light on America's apparent diplomatic paralysis and lays bare the biggest rift between the nations since the oil price shock of 1973.
The tough line from Riyadh is driven by concern that Western governments were too eager to shove aside Mubarak when the uprising began, without proper consideration of what should follow him.
"With Egypt in chaos, the kingdom is Washington's only major ally left in the Arab world and the Saudis want the Americans to remember that," said a source in Riyadh.
The White House declined to comment on the reports Wednesday, saying that the administration did not divulge what other leaders said to Obama.

Efforts by the West to pressure Egypt’s new government to end its crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood could be moot thanks to Saudi Arabia’s oil money – and whole-hearted backing of the military.
While the West calls for peace in Cairo, the Saudis are supporting Gen. Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who led the ouster of Mohammed Morsi. The Kingdom has pledged to make up for any loss in foreign aid resulting from the military’s brutal crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood.
On Monday, the country’s foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal issued a hard-hitting statement via the Saudi Press Agency pushing back on the West.
“To those who have announced they are cutting their aid to Egypt, or threatening to do that, (we say that) Arab and Muslim nations are rich and will not hesitate to help Egypt,” said Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal, in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency. “Arab states will never accept manipulation of their fates or tampering with their security and stability by the international community.”
Saudi Arabia, along with its Gulf allies the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, has already pledged $12 billion in aid to Egypt’s new rulers –a figure that dwarfs the $1.3 billion the U.S. gives Egypt annually. Like the Saudi monarchy, the royal families of the Emirates and Kuwait are bitter foes of the Muslim Brotherhood, which they have long seen as a threat.
And while Washington labored over whether to dub the ousting of Morsi, Egypt’s first ever Islamist president, a coup or not, Riyadh didn’t disguise its delight with King Abdullah issuing a statement of support within hours. He has since continued to offer rhetorical support for what he calls Egypt's fight against “terrorism and extremism.”
