The purchase is covered so we can't see what he bought, could have been one bottle of wine and the waiters are crying.

The waiter could have provided horrible service, thus forcing Jean Claude's hand in providing a pathetic tip.
The way I see it, every waiter starts off with a projected 20% tip. Depending on whether or not his service remains exceptional, I will either keep the estimated tip at 20% or reduce accordingly to a fitting amount.
While I know that a waiter practically lives off of his tips, for a restaurant to try and contact Van Damme regarding the lack of a sufficient tip is downright insane. There is no legal obligation to the amount of tip one must leave. It's a damn tip for crying out loud..

Is he broke JNN?? I have heard this but it seems unlikely. I mean, i have many of his movies and his should not be broke.
-
If they don't like it, next time its zero.

Better yet, he should just provide the waiter with a 360-spinning kick for good measure..

Maybe if you included tips in the price of the food and then paid your workers more?
But then you Americans would have nothing to bitch about
-
They include 15% right off the bat, whether the service was good or not - he gave $40 more, and they call him cheap? Screw the restaurant who complains on this. Jeez.

Give him a break, it was his last $40.00

Why do they expect every guy that at some time in his life acted in a hollywood movie has to tip 500$$?
They should fire the waiter who let this slip, bad rep for the customer, what a fucked up restaurant.
-
A tip is a tip ... for exceptional service. I leave what I feel the server deserves. If the service sucks, I leave nothing. Fuck 'em.
-
It's not like the states over here, you don't have to leave a tip, you just fuck off after you've finished your food. I only tip if it's for an insanely hot waitress.
-
Fuck tipping.
It's a stupid and fucked up system.
The restaurant should pay the waiters more so we don't have to support them with tips.
USA is the only country with such a fucked up system.
-
Fuck the restaurant and fuck TMZ for stirring up shit just for their own agenda.
-
The service probably sucked.
Id bet they were lucky to even get that $40......
Dont believe everything u see and read on TMZ guys.
-
A 40 dollar tip is pretty fucking GOOD.
Some chump waiter gets 40 bucks for about an hour of work. Sound like a good deal to me.
FUCK these asshole waiters who think they deserve 20%. They can kiss my ass.

I went to dinner with a friends family when i was in high school.
His grandfather was taking everyone out for my buddies graduation.
Well, it was a pretty nice restaurant and what this old man did was. He put 5 $20 bills on the table. He told the waitress. "Right now this is your tip, now everytime my drink isnt full, u dont clear the table when your supposed to, or u dont bring me a bottle of ketchup when i get my steak im gonna take away one of these 20's.."
Needless to say that nite I had some of the best service I ever had and that waitress walked out with a $100 tip for a five or six hundred dollar tab......Not too bad if u ask me.

That's awesome. I'm gonna try that next time. Gotta remember to bring 5 ones with me. ;D

Where I live now.
No sales tax. No tips.
You go to a restaurant and order a ten dollar meal. You pay 10 dollars.
How it should be. I go out to eat every day here.
In the US I don't go out to eat as much, mainly because of the bullshit tipping policy. It's more of a social thing in the US. Here it's an everyday thing.
-
plus - the tab was included. van damme went 40 bucks above that. he probably ended up tipping 200 bucks on a 800 table, right? that's 25%.... that resetautant should see a loss in high end clientelle, knowing that credit card info can go public like that.
-
WOW...
I didn't realize how many assholes were on this site

What a bunch of morons. Someone comes into your restaurant and drops almost $1k and the receipt ends up on TMZ. That'll be the last $1k he drops there for sure. What a great way to ensure you get less business from the wealthiest people in the area.
As for the tip - isn't $40 a good tip? Let's say I eat $100 in food and $100 in wine - a $40 top would be OK, right? Now lets say I eat $100 in food and a single bottle of wine for $800 - what exactly has the waiter/waitress done to earn more money from me?
I say fuck 'em. The US system of tipping is retarded. It's pure socialism.

I knew johhny wouldn't take this thread laying down.....oh wait nevermind :-\ :-X
-
so because hes rich he has to give alot?
-
we dont have to worry about tipping here. They are just doing their fucking job and they do get a salary, And dont see poeple tipping the people that takes care of your garbage? I would tip them before randoms walking out with my order. ITS THEIR JOB.
-

X2 I tip based on the work done not the amount paid. If all you did was bring a 900 dollar bottle to the table FUCK OFF.
And yes I'm one of those cheap fucks that don't tip to often. On average I pay my 15 but it usually depends on how drunk I am. I.E. at a bar I don't tip for my first 5 drinks, on my 6th I usally start giving alot more, and by the end of the night I'm asking for my cash back ;D
Fuck tipping, this is what's wrong with society. People are too afraid of seeming cheap. Which is sad since with our debt obsession, being cheap is one thing we are not in short supply of.
-
i see allot of snowbirds (old people)here where i live. they are ruthless about tipping. a group of 4 leaves 2 bucks.

Here in the states alot of places pay their waitresses less then minimum wage counting on the employees making their money through tips....so I tip off the standard 15%,better service I'll tip a little more, bad service less tip, normal service standard tip.
-
Gratuity's are include at most better places. In SoCal, around 18 to 20% (in Europe it's always included). Even though, that $40 was rather uncool. A tip required may also depend on the size of the party. Table servers have a tough time dealing with drunks, guys trying to impress their dates/friends, just plain snobs (just think of TA in a better eating establishment) other all around A-holes. You really have to love taking crap from all sorts of people, including the managers and some chiefs.

why not pay a normal fucking salery and get rid of the tipping.. people would probably pay a little bit mroe if they didnt have to worry about tipping anyway
-

The idea is the staff get higher pay during peak hours, meaning service level is maintained. It's all about service when you eat out, if not save 50 bucks and goto mickyD's.
-
I think expecting a tip is just cheeky. As far as I'm concerned people get paid by their employees, not everyone can afford a tip anyway.

Van Damme holds a special place in the hearts of all of us in our late twenties to early thirties. His movies marked our youths. To many of us, he is seen as a hero. Even his worst films, like "Legionnaire"(1997) are so much better than the action crap we get today. The golden age of Van Damme(1989-1995) marks the best era in action films ever. Arnold and Sly were good, but Van Damme was the man. I remember when I went to watch "Street Fighter: The Film" and Van Damme's performance as Guile saved the film. His battle with Bison was epic. He is the fucking man.

i hope this restaurant gets blacklisted.
if he tipped a dollar or a thousand, it's no one's business.
same way here, about a year ago johnny depp tipped $4000 at a steakhouse, and it was huge news for some reason.

the owner of that place is gonna be PISSED. van damme wont come back, other celebs wont probably go there , bad publicity knowing that your fucking tip can end up on the internet
-
increase the prices to cover the stupid tipping... Would never tip
-

Because waiters really don't want that.
I think that if you're a decent waiter in a decent restaurant, you can make MUCH more money by tips then by salary. If you have a good night, you can make more in a night than in the whole week.
-
yea, he was up there with Arnold and Sly.
watched Death Warrant again the other night, JC was in great shape and to his credit still keeps himself in good nick.

Agree completely... Start at 20%... goes down from there... occasionally for awesome service, ill tip a little bit more...

I worked in a restaurant on Nantucket. Mid summer the waitstaff were making an average of 800$ in tips a night.
How are tips taxable?
Makes you wonder why to work a "normal" job.
