Wash. considers extra fee on electric cars(Washington State)

Drivers of electric vehicles in Washington state won't be paying gas taxes, so the state wants some of the lost money back by means of an annual $100 fee.
Under a bill introduced in the Legislature, electric-car owners would pay a special $100 fee each year over and above any other required fees and taxes, The Seattle Times reported Monday.
Senate Transportation Committee Chairwoman Mary Margaret Haugen said it's an issue of fairness.
"Electric cars will be driving on the highways right along with all the other cars. One of our biggest issues is preservation and maintenance of our existing highways," Haugen, lead sponsor of the bill, said. "We believe they should be paying their fair share."
The Washington Department of Transportation estimates an owner of a gasoline-powered car who drives 12,000 miles per year pays an average $204 in state gas taxes.
The state gas tax is 37.5 cents per gallon.
One anti-tax activist said he doesn't think what's in Haugen's bill is a fee at all.
"That's a tax. It's no fee," Tim Eyman said.
Automaker Nissan, which sells the all-electric Leaf sedan in the state, is neutral on the measure, company spokeswoman Katherine Zachary said.
"Whenever new technology is being introduced, we'd like to see as few barriers to entry as possible. However, we recognize the need for all drivers to contribute to road-maintenance funds," the company said in a statement provided by Zachary.

Can't wait till they impose a "disposal fee" for the batteries. God only kows how much these maddoffs in govt will charge for that.

Weak. I don't want to see a tax or fee on electric cars. This is too important for that rubbish.
-
A Honda Civic or Honda FIT for 20k is still a better alternative than an electric car.

Think about this they are already designing cars that dont need to plug in to recharge. Cars that are for all intents and purposes self sustaining. So what will they tax when you can buy those cars?

Always a fee of some kind somewhere. This is always guaranteed. You get off oil, electric only, wait till you see your hydro bill.
-
All these extra taxes encourage Americans to do nothing and own nothing. Way to discourage sales of electric cars, which are already overpriced to begin with.

Elecrtic Car tech is still not nearly as good as it should be if they think peopl are going to drop 40k forone of these things.

Fuck them I'll walk.

And here you see why we will never see great fuel mileage on standard, everyday cars & trucks. The government makes way too much money on gasoline and diesel consumption to every want to honestly curtail it.

The govt seems look at us all like pinatas to whacked every way possible until we all bleed money from a gaping hole.
