Post by: The_Hammer on February 11, 2011, 01:07:32 PM
How much weight do you use in your working set for 8 reps with a pause at the top?

I've been using tiny little 50 pound dumbells.  8)

I'm not sure the weight is really important for isolation exercises.

I always use dumbells and keep it light 50 or 60 lbs.  I don't want monster traps because they are big enough and I think oversized traps make shoulders look smaller.  On e hurt my neck on smith machine shrugs so won't do that again.

I do them behind the back and use 315 at the moment but those are for sets of 12-15.

Doing them from the front I can do much more but I don't feel it at all and besides, my nuts get in the way. Leaning forward to alleviate this only fucks my lower back up more than it already is.

I used to do them in the front, but my junk would get in way...and behind the back...well, I've been blessed with booty, so I have to stand straight up...dumbell strugs seemed to be the best.

But, the squeeze the best...i can get a trap workout just pushing my head agaist the pillow at home...

trap bar is the only way to go , keeps the weight from touching your legs , cleaner reps

I dont isolate, just randomly pick up cars in parking lot on way out of gym, to finish off

Higher reps works better for traps IMO,and too much trap development causes a sloped shoulder look which will detract from shoulder width unless your physique is Mr. Olympia caliber.

However much your mom weighs, that's the weight that I shrug with.

Do them on the standing calve machine. You'll love it, isolates only the trap muscles.

Or the deadlft machine...

Shrugs are the only exercise you can do, if you don't feel like doing anything...

Heavy as possible. Should be more than you can deadlift imo, helps improve the dead by getting used to the feel of heavier weight

yeh,, i actual use it alot, for deadlifts... my lower back has been a bit dodgy from swinging huuuge hammers at work, can get away with these... hammer shrug/high pull machine

normal deadlifts do build alot of trap size tho

Yeah, they are also called "shrug machine", I used to use the one at my gym strictly for shrugs...they generally look like this

I had no idea people use this for deadlifts. But I've never found the need for shrugs since including deadlifts.

Out of the hundreds, if not thousands of times I've done this exercise I've gotten a pump maybe 3-5 times.

I've felt deadlifts in my traps maybe 2-3 times.

But I'm hoping this will all change soon...

Oddly enough I remember this machine being advertised for lunges? ???

I'm pretty sure that's what it says it's for at my gym.

When I first saw it in my gym, years ago, I was like WTF is this, but then I realized what it was for...the gym I went to had limited room for someone to actually perform deadlifts, and for others to walk around them---so a machine deadlift---but, it's ideal for shrugs---hell, one could use a wheelbarrow for shrugs, as that is what the movement feels like.

Now, has anyone seen a diff between rolling at the top of the movement or straight up and down. Levrone rolls at the top of his.

You can't really lunge with that, unless you start at the bottom of the movement and go "up", switching each leg...so basically replicating the "lunge" movement in a stationary position...but, the handles are pointed down, thus making it awkward to perform the lunge movement.

Oh, I know!  I actually tried doing lunges with it once or twice, almost herniated a disc!  :o

Still, maybe I'm just hallucinating, but I swear I remember a little sticker on the machine showing a guy using it for lunges.

its useless to do isolation exercises unless you go heavy as fuck. if you dont go heavy they dont really test your cardio vascular system

the best trap movement is shrugging with a 45 pound plate in each hand......making sure to squeeze at the top.....sensational trap pump.......i prefer plate shrugs over the barbell version.

nah, thats pretty limited, even with the strictest movement, weight would be far too light for most

Take said weight, bend over at 45 degree or more....and shrug upwards....do about 10 reps with a really hard squeeze at the top...due to the angle you have a really good trap workout, with lighter weight than you'd use when standing up...
