Their quads are actually pretty weak since they don't hit them much doing that. It's all gut and posterior chain. Their guts are big so they squat big. Strength = size.  :D

Lol, now that i've cut down i notice how much a gut helps while doing squats. It gives a shitload of extra leverage.

Some of those guys got good quads they're just so fat you can't tell. The problem is like van said, those aren't real squats, with the form they are using and the box they are sitting down..  That's a glute workout

I'm a powerlifter and very well acquainted with Westside and its practices (even employ some of them), but I feel it's gone too far in its pursuit of records. Too much support gear, too much movement manipulation, too many "tricks", too much drug reliance, etc. I mean, these cats are strong, no doubt, but they're also not anywhere near the levels they think they are, if oldschool standards are observed.

Take away the box and it's a "real" squat. A lot powerlifters will only box squat and then perform the "real" squat during a meet. Want to increase power....box squat!

Forget that those things even exist. There is only strength.

Used to make the five hour drive up there every weekend.  Hardcore to say the least.  One thing I've learned from all the heavy lifting I did...better do it "on" because when you get older, your joints will never forgive you.

STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 70's(extended through maybe 1985) was the best decade(and maybe half) for all of the power sports:

i think if those westside guys stood with wider stances, and added more sofa cushions to sit on they would get better results.

they appear to be natural. small, and fat

This is the sort of squatting that impresses me the most.

That 800 pound squat posted above had me wincing, the way he dropped into the bottom position.

That's the Chinese weightlifting squad, they're all beasts. The Koreans are really good Olympic lifters also.

Check out the back development on one of the Chinese's top men:

I bought one of the squishy cushions they squatted down onto during this workout.

I'm using it as a pillow at night.

Bit hard to get info on Chinese training. It uses perceived maximal weights(which means whatever the coach or lifter thinks is right, so it might be 100% one day, 87.2% another day, etc....). Lots of pulls, overhead squats, push presses. Their coaches allow bodybuilding style lifts for bringing up small body parts, weak areas, etc..... Dumbbell rows, benching, etc.... are popular.

Here's a small look at training frequency:

"I can tell you about the Hubei provincial team (central China). They train about 9 times per week, 6 days per week. They do snatches, CJ's, all kinds of variations of them, squats (front, back, overhead), pulls/deads, push presses, bodybuilding-type stuff (mostly for injury prevention), bodyweight exercises, broad jumps, jogging, etc. They do 1-5 reps on barbell stuff, every % up to 100+%. They got busted for drugs last summer and couldn't compete for a year."

"Something like this: twice a day on Mon Wed Fri. once a day on Tue Thur Sat. In most sessions, they start with one of the competition lifts, and then do assistance exercises for it. Some days are heavier than others."

And a long thread with a fella training with a Chinese coach:

http://fortified-iron.com/board/7/14/37467-chinese-deadlifts-pulls-3.html .

Add in genetics, steroids, and the pick of a billion plus people, and boom..... Success.
