Potential 2012 Republican Presidential candidate, Newt Gingrich, speaking at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition

The life and times of Newt Gingrich, Serial Philanderer, Ethics Violator, Political FAILURE
Ethics sanctions

During Gingrich's term as Speaker, eighty-four ethics charges were filed against him, most of which were leveled by House Democratic Whip David Bonior. Eighty-three of the eighty-four allegations were dropped.[44]

The remaining charge consisted of two counts "of failure to seek legal advice" and one count of "providing the committee with information which he knew or should have known was inaccurate" concerning the use of a tax exempt college course for political purposes. To avoid a full hearing, Gingrich and the House Ethics Subcommittee negotiated a sanctions agreement, which Democrats accused Gingrich of immediately violating. Nonetheless, the agreement was forwarded to the House for approval.[45] [46] On January 21, 1997, the House voted 395 to 28 to reprimand Gingrich, including a $300,000 "cost assessment" to recoup money spent on the investigation.[47][48] This was the first time in the House's history that the Speaker had been disciplined for ethics violations.[49]

The full committee panel did not reach a conclusion about whether the "Renewing American Civilization" college course had violated federal tax law and instead opted to leave it up to the IRS.[50] In 1999, the IRS cleared the organizations connected with the courses under investigation for possible tax violations.[51]

Leadership challenge

In the summer of 1997 several House Republican backbenchers, who saw Gingrich's public image as a liability, attempted to replace him as Speaker.
The attempted "coup" began July 9 with a meeting between Republican conference chairman John Boehner of Ohio and Republican leadership chairman Bill Paxon of New York. According to their plan, House Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, Boehner and Paxon were to present Gingrich with an ultimatum: resign, or be voted out. However, Armey balked at the proposal to make Paxon the new Speaker, and told his chief of staff to warn Gingrich about the coup.[52]

On July 11, Gingrich met with senior Republican leadership to assess the situation. He explained that under no circumstance would he step down. If he was voted out, there would be a new election for Speaker, which would allow for the possibility that Democrats—along with dissenting Republicans—would vote in Dick Gephardt as Speaker. On July 16, Paxon offered to resign his post, feeling that he had not handled the situation correctly, as the only member of the leadership who had been appointed to his position—by Gingrich—instead of elected.[53]

Resignation

By 1998, Gingrich had become a highly visible and polarizing figure in the public's eye, making him a target for Democratic congressional candidates across the nation. His approval rating was 45% in April 1998.[54]

Republicans lost five seats in the House in the 1998 midterm elections—the worst performance in 64 years for a party that didn't hold the presidency. Polls showed that Gingrich and the Republican Party's attempt to remove President Clinton from office was widely unpopular among Americans.[55]

Gingrich suffered much of the blame for the election loss. Facing another rebellion in the Republican caucus, he announced on November 6, 1998 that he would not only stand down as Speaker, but would leave the House as well. He had been handily reelected to an 11th term in that election, but declined to take his seat. Commenting on his departure, Gingrich said, "I'm willing to lead but I'm not willing to preside over people who are cannibals. My only fear would be that if I tried to stay, it would just overshadow whoever my successor is."[56]

Personal Life

Gingrich has been married three times. In 1962, he married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old and she was 26.[88][89] They had two daughters. In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left Battley after having an affair with Marianne Ginther.[90][91] According to Battley, Gingrich visited her while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery to discuss the details of their divorce. However, Gingrich disputes the account.[70] Six months after the divorce was final, Gingrich wed Ginther in 1981.[92][93]

In the mid-1990s, Gingrich began an affair with House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek, who is 23 years his junior; they continued their affair during the Lewinsky scandal.[94] In 2000, Gingrich married Bisek shortly after his divorce from second wife Ginther. He and Callista currently live in McLean, Virginia.[95]

Does Newt Gingrich have the credibility in preaching Christianity when he can't even uphold his marital promises made to two women in the Houses of God and in front of priests?
by Bill

I should think that Newt Gingrich has no right to accuse anyone of paganism, when he's far from being a true and stable Christian.
He preaches hate and division, can't keep his marriage vows, not once but twice, can't even stay loyal to his evangelical church and teachings and flip-flopped to Catholicism. America can't have a more unstable and radical Christian than Gingrich. Those, like him uses the Name of Christ to shield their sins. They are no different from Judas.

In 1977, he had an extramarital affair with a woman named Anne Manning. "We had oral sex," Manning revealed. "He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, 'I never slept with her.'" She added that Gingrich threatened her: "If you ever tell anybody about this, I'll say you're lying." Manning has also said, "he's morally dishonest."

And this Gingrich dares to say he's a real Christian??? LOL

Newt’s Family Values Problem
March 8th, 2011

Pete Wehner tries to assess how much past marital infidelity will hurt Newt Gingrich’s presidential chances.

Many of the rest of us are on a continuum when it comes to deciding how much infidelity should matter in the selection of a president. Facts and circumstances are crucial. Was the infidelity an isolated instance or a chronic pattern? Were the transgressions long ago or recent? What levels of deception and cover-up were involved? What was the position of authority the person held when the infidelity occurred? Was there an alarming degree of recklessness on display? What evidence is there that this person has changed his ways? Has this person shown other worrisome signs when it comes to character and trustworthiness?

These are all fair and interesting points, but they do not address the reason that Gingrich’s personal life has been – and will be – so politically lethal.

It’s not the infidelity. It’s the arrogance, hypocrisy, and – most horrifying to women voters – the cruelty.

Anyone can dump one sick wife. Gingrich dumped two.

And that second dumped wife is talking to the media. From the Esquire magazine profile of Newt Gingrich published in September 2010:

After going to the doctor for a mysterious tingling in her hand, [Marianne Gingrich] was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Early in May 1999, she went out to Ohio for her mother’s birthday. A day and a half went by and Newt didn’t return her calls, which was strange. They always talked every day, often ten times a day, so she was frantic by the time he called to say he needed to talk to her.

    “About what?”

He wanted to talk in person, he said.

“I said, ‘No, we need to talk now.’ “

    He went quiet.

    “There’s somebody else, isn’t there?”

She kind of guessed it, of course. Women usually do. But did she know the woman was in her apartment, eating off her plates, sleeping in her bed?

She called a minister they both trusted. He came over to the house the next day and worked with them the whole weekend, but Gingrich just kept saying she was a Jaguar and all he wanted was a Chevrolet. “‘I can’t handle a Jaguar right now.’ He said that many times. ‘All I want is a Chevrolet.’ “

He asked her to just tolerate the affair, an offer she refused.

He’d just returned from Erie, Pennsylvania, where he’d given a speech full of high sentiments about compassion and family values.

The next night, they sat talking out on their back patio in Georgia. She said, “How do you give that speech and do what you’re doing?”

“It doesn’t matter what I do,” he answered. “People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.”

Who needs oppo research with quotes like those on the record?

Newt Gingrich or Woody Allen: Who's More Honest About Cheating?
David Corn

03/10/11
Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker and not-quite-official 2012 Republican presidential aspirant, has been spouting dumb comments and tossing rhetorical stink bombs for decades. He recently suggested that President Barack Obama is "so outside our comprehension" that his behavior can only be explained by his supposed "Kenyan, anti-colonial" mindset.

During the 1990s, his political action committee, GOPAC, disseminated a memo to Republican candidates with a list of suggested words they should use when describing Democratic opponents. That list included "sick," "pathetic," "betray," "bizarre," "cheat," and "traitors."

In 1994, Gingrich jumped his own shark, claiming that Democrats were responsible for turning the United States into a depraved society and pointing to Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman who had killed her own two children, as evidence of this. "I think that the mother killing the two children in South Carolina vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we need to change things," he said. "The only way you get change is to vote Republican." (Smith, though, had come from a Republican family.)

But one of Gingrich's most ill-considered remarks came this week when he appeared on CBN and insisted that his past two extramarital affairs were caused by an overabundance of patriotic devotion. Asked about his infidelities, he said:

There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate. And what I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn't trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing them.

Gingrich was maintaining that he had committed adultery because he had worked too hard. And he had worked too hard because he loved America too darn much. (Is it merely a coincidence that he cheated on his first two wives after each had contracted a serious illness?)

With this self-serving comment, Gingrich further damaged his credibility -- a week after he botched what seemed to be the launch of his presidential campaign. (Or was it the launch of an presidential exploratory committee? Or just the launch of a website?)

Gingrich's my-love-of-country-made-me-do-it-twice spin brought to mind Woody Allen. Not simply because of the veteran filmmaker's scandalous personal behavior. During the 1992 campaign, Gingrich tried to turn Allen into anti-Democratic ammo for the GOP. That year, Allen ended his 12-year-long relationship with actress Mia Farrow, and the news emerged that he was in a relationship with Soon-Yi Previn, a 22-year-old whom Farrow had adopted years before when she was married to conductor André Previn.

The Allen-Farrow-Previn affair became a major tabloid scandal, as Allen and Farrow bitterly fought over custody rights involving their three children and hurled nasty accusations at each other. Gingrich sought to tie this ugly matter to the Democrats, saying, "Woody Allen having non-incest with a non-daughter to whom he was a non-father because they were a non-family fits the Democratic platform perfectly."

We can leave it to smarter moral arbiters to decide whether hooking up with a young woman who is the adopted daughter of your partner is worse than cheating on and then leaving not one but two sick wives. But when you compare Allen's and Gingrich's respective explanations, it's no contest.

Asked in 1992 about his affair with Previn, Allen gave a direct answer:

I'm in love with her ... The heart wants what it wants. There's no logic to those things. You meet someone and you fall in love and that's that.

This hardly excused his behavior -- fulfilling a heartfelt desire can be rather selfish, destructive, and wrong. But his statement was no excuse: he had done what he did because he wanted to. Pure and simple. He wasn't trying to weasel out. He was confessing: I acted on my passion.

Compare that to Gingrich's explanation: he was overworked, due to his passion for the United States, and in happened." Gingrich was justifiably derided on cable television, Twitter, and websites for trying to wrap his infidelity in the flag. A formappropriate "thingser Gingrich staffer called me and howled in laughter: "This guy thinks he can be president?" After all, if the pressures of being a congressman and, then, House speaker caused Gingrich to become a serial wife-cheater, what might the demands of the presidency do to the poor fellow? (Bordellos beware!)

People do make mistakes. They can be judged for them -- and voters (and film-goers) are free to decide what personal actions matter. Explanations, too, can be judged. When it comes to explaining the ways of the heart (or another organ), Woody Allen has been more honest than Newt Gingrich. That's not saying much for Allen, but it is for the guy who thinks he can be president.

Eye of the Newt
By GAIL COLLINS

The presidential race is barely under way, but already we have had our first Big Thought. I am speaking, of course, of Newt Gingrich’s suggestion that he was driven into serial adultery by hard work and patriotism.

“There’s no question that at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and that things happened in my life that were not appropriate,” he told an interviewer on the Christian Broadcasting Network.

You can imagine how much discussion this sparked. “Will ‘feeling passionate about this country’ become the new ‘hiking the Appalachian Trail’? ” asked Bruce Handy of Vanity Fair.

Really, the concept explains quite a bit. New York’s former governor, Eliot Spitzer, worked a lot. And right now New York City is reeling over the indictment of a powerful state senator, who turns out to have had a secret life in a waterside mansion that he shared with two male gynecologists and their mother. We are still sorting out the details, but I can tell you that this guy used to be the chairman of the Finance Committee. You can only sit through so many hearings on tax policy before the call of the wild starts ringing in your ears.

Also, whenever I hear “former Mayor Rudy Giuliani” I think of patriotism and round-the-clock dedication to the job. Also, about the time he called a press conference to announce that he and his wife were separating and the wife, who hadn’t heard, started telling reporters about an affair she believed Rudy had had with a female staffer.

Gingrich is asked about his personal life more often than most politicians. If you’re on your third wife, cheated perpetually on the first two, and are running for the Republican presidential nomination as a social conservative, these things come up.

The most famous story about Gingrich’s failed marriages is about his first wife, Jackie, who had been Newt’s high school math teacher before he appeared at her door and suggested a new equation. Jackie was recovering from surgery for uterine cancer when her husband walked in and started talking about the terms of a divorce.

She is not to be confused with the second wife, Marianne, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was visiting her mother when her husband called to tell her there was another woman.

Anyway, you can see how the topic of Gingrich’s home life would come up. Generally, he doesn’t seem all that thrilled by the invitation to explain himself. But he was very chatty on the Christian Broadcasting Network. Perhaps this was because of the way the interviewer, David Brody, phrased his question.

“Talk about a forgiving God?” he asked.

Newt was quite forthcoming about both God’s readiness to forgive him and the much, much better lifestyle he has embraced now that he’s found true love with Wife No. 3, converted to Catholicism and “learned an immense amount.”

People, can we all agree now that men who spend their early and middle ages betraying women right and left are not allowed to get credit for discovering the joys of monogamy at about the same time that they receive their first Social Security check?

Of course, Gingrich is being a better husband this time around. He’s 67! By then, most men have not just finished sowing their wild oats. The oats have been harvested, ground up, reprocessed and turned into soggy cornflakes.

“In general, in men and women, the sexual hormones decrease as you age. It’s a lot of work, dating and managing multiple partners,” says Rose Hartzell, a therapist at the San Diego Sexual Medicine Center.

God forgives you at any age, but voters should only reward reformations that occur before the miscreant receives his first copy of the AARP bulletin.

Gingrich offered up his analysis of the cause of his sexual indiscretions when he appeared with other presidential hopefuls at an event in Iowa sponsored by the Faith and Freedom Coalition. This is a group established by the former Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed, who is recovering from a fall from grace himself. Reed’s involved secretly working with the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff to block a ban on Internet gambling. Which I do not believe is the sort of thing you can blame on a heavy schedule and the flag.

In his public life, Gingrich’s rhetoric is less forgiving than apocalyptic. His speech in Iowa was laced with attacks on Democrats (“secular socialists”) and a call for “a political change so deep and so profound that nothing we have seen in our lifetime is comparable.” He has called Barack Obama “authentically dishonest,” and “a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president.”

If only Obama had committed adultery instead of health care reform, I’m sure they’d be getting along a lot better.

Newt Gingrich gets religion
By Jamil Smith

Now that skilled fundraiser Newt Gingrich has set up his semi-exploratory, help-me-make-up-my-mind-to-run-for-President fund (operators are standing by!), there is news today that he is seeking some shine from up on high. Mr. Gingrich knows his less-than-holy personal history (patriotic or not) may have the Christian right raising a side-eye at him in 2012, but he might get points for showing up on the schedule for a well-known pastor.

No, not Reverend Jeremiah Wright. You kidders. This isn't Carl Paladino-esque performance art.

(Wait, whose church is he speaking at? Seriously?)

Later this month, [Pastor John Hagee will] host former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a 2012 aspirant, at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio. For the candidate and the pastor, the summit is a chance for two controversial figures to help each other back into the spotlight—though a Hagee spokesman says the pastor has no plans to endorse Gingrich.

Mr. Hagee's name should ring a bell. He is the Texas megachurch pastor that, as Mother Jones reminds us today, senator John McCain couldn't escape fast enough in 2008 after news of his endorsement brought forth revelations (natch) that Hagee blamed gays for Hurricane Katrina and called Catholicism a "false cult" and a contributor to Hitler's anti-Semitism.

What candidate who actually wants to win seeks this guy out?

LOL

He represents america in all of his douchebagness, criminal background, disconnect to reality and personal biases and opinions.
