Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr, who played on the band's first two influential albums and was one of the last people to see singer Layne Staley alive, has been found dead in a Salt Lake City, Utah home, TMZ reports. Starr, who was 44, was arrested earlier this month in Salt Lake City and found to be in possession of six Xanax pills and six Opana painkillers. According to a police report, Starr asked an officer if he'd heard of Alice in Chains, and said he was in Utah with a friend to put together a new band. "It's a terrible shock and tragedy," the rocker's father told the website today.

Me too. I knew he wouldn't make it sober. I didn't want nor expect him to die, but I could see he wasn't ready to be clean and stay that way. Plus he was taking enough shit for a week of Charlie Sheen parties.

Alice in Chains is good. A little too depressing, dark and negative for me though. Even back in the 90's I was never into them too much. They were smacked out Emo's before being a smacked out Emo was cool.

6 Xanax ?!!? LOL , I have a bottle of 100, since when are they arresting people for having xanax ?!!

Yeah...you had to be in the mood for them. They were just so fucking depressing. Grunge music in general wasn't the most life affirming music....but those guy were like damn...get outside and walk around a little...it ain't THAT bad.
They had some killer grooves though. Jerry Cantrell could write some good rock music.

Jerry Cantrell's guitar playing is what made that band great. I think that without him that band would have been much, much worse because he was carrying them. Layne Stayley was a good vocalist, but nothing amazing. The other 2 guys were alright.
I'm just never in the mood to listen to depressing music. Right now i'm listening to some Mighty Mighty Bosstones, I like something that makes me feel happy.

Yup.
The vocals were unique but I would not call Layne a gifted Singer...he's no Chris Cornell ...and AIC definitely had their own sound. The way Layne and Jerry harmonized on the choruses was cool..which set them apart from the pack.
But you're right about bass and drums...they were just two guys who hooked up with the right band...could have been anybody.
I think one of them.played for Ozzy

Aic was a little too depressing even for the grunge era ;D. I did like their harmonies and that was what seemed to set them apart. I did like their music but the other seattle bands seemed to overshadow aic.

If he ain't posing shirtless with a semi-hard cock in a thong, BayGBM hasn't heard of him.

Fan of early AIC. Dark, but really solid songs on the first two albums. And criticizing their musicianship? Uh, how about Nirvana.... oh brother. You just knew that dig was coming.... ;D
I remember seeing this guy on the celeb rehab and he was a mess.
