Survivors of Bronx bus crash head back to casino

They couldn't resist.
Two gamblers who miraculously survived a catastrophic brush with death aboard a Chinatown casino bus climbed back aboard the same company's bus only hours later for another trip to the gaming tables.
Bernardo Garcia, a 50-year-old cook from Brooklyn -- whose buddy Miguel Aquino was one of 14 people killed in Saturday's horrific 5:30 a.m. World Wide Tours bus crackup on the Hutchinson River Parkway -- told The Post he figured Lady Luck was on his side.
"I'm the kind of person that believes when it's your time to go, it's your time to go," he said.

And Theodore Radulescu, a 55-year-old cook from The Bronx, rushed straight from St. Barnabas Hospital still dressed in his medical gown and bloody socks to the Lower East Side's Bowery Mission, where he picked up new clothes before boarding another World Wide Tours bus back to Connecticut's Mohegan Sun casino.
"When a bomb goes off, it doesn't go off again in the same spot," Radulescu reasoned.
Only hours earlier, the pair had been on the World Wide Tours bus that careened out of control and had its top sheered off by a metal pole on the highway in The Bronx, decapitating at least one passenger and ripping arms off others.
After Garcia was treated for minor injuries and released from Jacobi Medical Center in The Bronx on Saturday, he headed right back to Chinatown for the 8:45 p.m. bus to Mohegan Sun -- even after seeing his gambling buddy, Aquino, die in the crash.
After the accident, "I touched [Aquino], trying to wake him up, but he didn't give no answer," Garcia said.
Garcia said the entire busload of passengers was resting or asleep when disaster struck.
"We didn't know what really happened -- we were all in the back," he said of the survivors. "We got out through a window on the top of the bus. We saw people screaming and crying. My mind is still all f - - k ed up.
"Seeing all those bodies, bruises all over their faces. The pole went right through everyone in the head. There was screaming. I can't even describe it. I saw arms cut off. They said one man lost both arms. Five people lost their arms."
Radulescu -- who lost $65 playing video poker and Jacks or Better on Friday night -- said the crash haunts him still.
"I woke up when I was slammed into the window," he recalled.
"I tried to help one lady. She didn't respond, I think she was dead. I helped two other ladies asking for help. I pulled them up through the window by their arms. One was bleeding from the head.
"I lost my shoes," he said. "When I got out, my right sock was soaked in blood. It wasn't mine."
But despite the troubling memories, after his discharge from St. Barnabas, Radulescu said, he went back for more.
"I'm not the kind of guy to be scared," he said.
At least two more gamblers who'd also escaped serious injuries in the Saturday dawn crash returned to the casino Saturday night, too, but both refused to comment to The Post.
Meanwhile yesterday, the grim, heartbreaking job of informing relatives of the victims continued.
At least one critically injured 50-year-old man at Jacobi Hospital remains unidentified, a spokeswoman said.
A police source said investigators will take his photo and fingerprints and try to match it up with any missing-persons reports that have been filed since the crash. So far, there have been no missing-persons reports filed.
One gambler who was at the Mohegan Sun on Saturday night said he narrowly escaped death -- because he got distracted watching YouTube boxing videos in the casino and missed catching the bus back home.
The lucky gambler, Javier Parada, 39, said he'd won $100 playing poker Friday night and was distracted by watching YouTube and talking to a friend moments before the doomed bus departed.
"I was supposed to be on that bus," Parada said. "God must have pulled me off."
Casino video footage shows the bus's driver, Ophadell Williams, passing the time before he hit the road again by getting something to eat. He survived and passed a Breathalyzer test after the crash.
Another World Wide Tours driver, Teddy Krdozyski of Astoria, Queens, who was shuttling passengers to and from the casino later on Saturday night, said the drivers work long hours -- 50 hours a week.
He said they work in 12-hour shifts, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.; he said he likes to sleep in the bus while waiting for gamblers to pile in for the ride home.

WTF?

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me
Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

I think its just greed of the quick score.
I live in the Bronx and know these types all too well. Theyare the type that have no problem holding up a gas station line 10 minutes with 15 people behind them while they fill out their lottery tickets.

AP sources: Bus driver in NYC crash stopped before

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The driver of a bus in a horrific weekend crash that killed 15 people in New York City should not have been able to get behind the wheel because he had two drivers' licenses and several traffic violations, two state officials familiar with the accident probe told The Associated Press on Monday.
Ophadell Williams was ticketed in 1995 for speeding and twice for driving without a license, using the alias of Erik Williams, the officials said. That license was suspended when the 40-year-old driver didn't address the charges. The revelations about Williams - a convicted felon with a 20-year-old manslaughter conviction - prompted Gov. Andrew Cuomo to launch a state investigation into how Williams was able to hold a valid commercial driver's license at the time of the crash early Saturday.
Calls to Williams' Brooklyn home were unanswered Monday. A spokesman for the bus company that employed him, World Wide Tours, declined to comment on the instructions of federal investigators.
A 15th person died Monday in the crash of the bus taking gamblers home from a few hours at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. The bus was sheared in half by a sign pole after overturning on the highway, killing and maiming people in a jumbled mess.
Investigators have zeroed in on the driver's record after Williams' story that his tour bus carrying 32 people was clipped by a tractor-trailer fell apart when passengers and witnesses said it never happened.
Investigators are piecing together his trail by matching Social Security numbers of traffic stops under different names, the officials said, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation. Williams also had an incomplete log book, a requirement for commercial drivers, the officials said.
Federal regulations ban commercial drivers from having more than one license. There are no federal regulations that would prohibit states from issuing a license to a bus driver with a criminal record, said Duane DeBruyne, a spokesman for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators said Monday they were looking at Williams' last 72 hours before the crash, checking the casinos' surveillance video.
"We want to know what he ate, what he drank and how much he slept," said NTSB vice chairman Christopher Hart.
Williams was convicted of crimes using two aliases. He served just more than two years for manslaughter for his role in a stabbing in 1990, according to state corrections records. He had initially been charged with second-degree murder.
Williams also served about three years, from 1998 to the middle of 2002, for grand larceny for removing an $83,905 check from a Police Athletic League fund, according to Linda Foglia, correctional services spokeswoman.
He also was arrested by New York City police on June 4, 2003, for driving with a suspended license and for possession of three police radios. In 1987, he was arrested on charges of trying to get on public transportation without paying.
Hart said the tractor-trailer and the bus had a black box-like engine control module that might have stored information. He said the module from the bus had been sent to the NTSB lab in Washington for downloading; the tractor-trailer was impounded.
He identified the owner of the tractor-trailer as Webster Trucking Company of Connecticut and Massachusetts, and said Webster was cooperating.
Hart said officials were bringing in extra equipment to inspect the left front side of the bus to check the driver's account.
Meanwhile, a 70-year-old man died Monday morning at St. Barnabas' Hospital in the Bronx, bringing the death toll to 15.
State police also identified all but two of the victims. Officials said most were of Chinese descent but not all their ages were available.
Sai Ling, 57, lost both her parents, Kam and Yuk Ng, in the crash.
She said her father, a former cook, had gone to the casinos for many years, but her mother, a retired garment worker, had begun to accompany him in the last few months after her sister died. "He didn't want to see her crying every day," Ling said.
Ling said her parents had lived in the United States for 30 years. They left seven grandchildren.
"This bus driver took their lives. They were in good health. They expected to live another 10 years," Ling said.
Miguel Aquino, 55; Jose Garcia; Bing Fong Lee; Don Lee, 76; Biqun Mei; Ninh Tran; Jian Hua Wan, 40; May Lin Won; Ock Thling, 83; Yang T. Xian; and Michael Yeh, 65 also died in the crash.
The casino has a lounge for bus drivers with coffee, soda, snacks and televisions, Mohegan Sun President Jeff Hartmann said. He said he did not know whether Williams was in the lounge before the trip.
"We don't keep track of them. They're on their own," he told the AP. He said the casino was cooperating with police.
The bus was one of scores that travel daily between Chinatown and the casinos in southeastern Connecticut. The Mohegan Sun caters to Chinese-American gamblers and has estimated that one-fifth of its business comes from Asian spending. Hartmann said 44,000 buses visit the casino annually from around the region.
Williams, who was released from the hospital Sunday, was at home Monday but did not appear outside. His friend and neighbor, Francisco Rivera, said Williams was a safe driver.
"I think something else happened. ... I've been in a car with him several times and I've never seen him drive crazy ... or swerve," Rivera said.
He said there was a death in Williams' family this year and a younger brother was lost "to the streets."
"And now this happens to him. Everybody's just messed up in the family right now," he said.

They cheated death.
if there's EVER a time to gamble, this is it... i'd say they're pretty fking lucky.
And you know they want to live for the moment after almost ending it.

here's a good story for you about casino patrons 333386..
Picture it Foxwoods, 1994. About 2am. People not on the gaming floor hanging out by the rainmaker, cafes or on the benches in non gaming area, USUALLY asians (not being racist). Security gets a call from a in house phone that a child has been injured in one of the escalators. Sure as shit this poor little girl, age 4, asian, got her hand stuck in the bottom part at the top of the escalator. Who was watching her, her 10 year old brother. Well Security and EMT arrive. Security calls the Connecticut State Police Casino Unit. Next thing I know, I get the call to allow the underage child allowed on the gaming floor, escorted by Gaming Commission, Security and CSP to find their father. Needless to say, this scumbag is playing Pai Gow Poker. Told him what happend. Escorts the kids via ambulance to the hospital, don't ya know when I was leaving for the night the father was playing. 10 Minutes later he was in the Gaming Commissions Exclusion Book. Sick fuck and the little girl lost her hand and he's playing Pai Gao Poker.
Most casino patrons are bat shit nuts

jeebus.
Now the casinos have all night baby sitting in the kids area, if I'm not mistaken. Drop your kids off, pay the money and they can run around and shit all night in a safe, confined area. I will say before those areas opened, you would see kids all hours of the night sleeping on benches and shit. Usually asian. Use to piss me the fuck off. I'm like HELLO don't they have school.
Don't even get me started on how stupid people use to try and cheat and pass counterfeits

Gambling addiction is crazy. Go to any Tribal Casino in the US and you will see the gambling addicts mindlessly pissing away their money in a haze like zombies. Go to Vegas and see the pure depravity and desperation of the gambling addict.
I saw some poor looking black guy piss away like 7000 dollars on the craps table last time. Afterwards he punched a slot machine in anger and was escorted out of the building. He probably beat someone's ass outside to vent the rage.

Yea like some idiot ass that was in cahoots with a cashier pushing the change cart. 1995. Gentleman in high roller slot area. He pushes the candle (light on top of machine) to indicate he needs change. Well a few cashiers walk by but doesn't get change from them. I make the call to the eye in sky and say watch this dude, something isn't right. Next thing, little cashier strolls by, he gives her 5, 100 bills with bill clinton's face on them. 10 minutes later same thing, he wins 5k payout. CSP and security and gaming commission, approach the gentleman, he's cuffed and the little cashier has her badge pulled and she starts to cry. OH BROTHER. Dumbasses.
