If you only have time to go to the gym once a day and you are doing both cardio and lifting, which should you do first?

If you have time to go twice a day, your priorities are f'd up.

Unless of course you're a get big billionaire.

if I have time I do light cardio before a workout, never after. And I dont touch a treadmill or a bike on or one day after leg day.

cardio and lifting dont mix. unless its moderate/low intensity intensity leg-based cardio (walking, eleptical, ridng a bike, jogging, treeadmill, stair mill) and an upper body workout. then your ok. i wouldnt do cardio before or after a leg workout.

Conditioning ALWAYS at the end. 20-25min intervals max.

Depends to who you put the question to  ;D. If its a permabulker, he would answer "no cardio, it burns muscle ::)", if hes a marathon runner he would answer "before" and lastly if hes a bodybuilder in good condition he would say "after".

You choose what you are from those 3.

You shouldn't be doing both in the same day.

Training should be divided into the following:
Lift days
NON-lift days (anaerobic, aerobic)

as someone already mentioned if u have the time to go to the gym 7 days a week and or go twice or three times a day , you're either a drug abusing ifbb pro who owns a smoothie store in florida or you have absolutely no life. so no matter what dorian yates says about cardio on off days only, i dont see how a man can go to a gym and not lift weights first. i have never gone to a gym to just do cardio LOL.

Lift.  Then cardio.

that way you burn stored fat and not the sugars in your body with the cardio.

best time to do cardio is 1st thing in am on empty stomach.  second best time is right after weight training.

And if you need motivation - Buddy Up!

Thank you all for the answers.  I have decided to try and split them up into separate days alternating between cardio days and lifting days.  For the times I have to do both, I will definately lift first.

My goal is to lose weight and gain some muscle.  I am 43 years old so I no longer care about getting huge, but I would like to put on some muscle and get stronger.

how many minutes you plan to run?..a few months ago i decided to take cardio seriously and burn off my spare tire....I ran almost every day about 5-6 days a week for 30-45 minutes......I did intervals and ran- walked- ran- walked...burned some awesome calories....my stomach disappeared and I could see abs again....BUT..the running took a lot out of me..I felt really weak all the time..my lifts went down....my clothes looked good on me but in bed I was losing my erections or couldn't get it up...I was burning myself to death with all the cardio work...just be careful..don't overdo it like I did.

I stopped the cardio and gained it all back...but my erections were back to normal even though I was fat again :D

I don't run.  I get shin splints every time I try and I should lose more weight before I try to run again.  I did run cross country in high school.  I lost weight without evey trying during that time and I didn't have much to lose, so putting in the mileage definately works, but it has to be like 25 miles a week and not 6 miles a week.

I mostly do eliptical and stairs.  When i really want to push it I do a spin class.  All pretty easy on the joints.

I will cut out almost anything that makes my erections go away.  No issues on that front yet.

It's been a month and I have dropped 20 pounds and my muscles are definately more firm now.  A month ago I was doing no cardio or lifting and all that got me was fat with bad blood numbers (high cholestoral, etc)

As long as you stay under 30 miles per week, your test levels shouldn't drop.

why 30 miles???..where did you get this number?
Title: Re: Cardio and Lifting in the same workout
Post by: dj181 on March 21, 2011, 06:30:51 PM
I read it in an old sports magazine article (don't remember which magazine) where they did studies of runners and found that after 30 to 35 miles per week the runners test levels started to drop.

why the hell would you want to run over 35 miles a week?

just run less and faster
Title: Re: Cardio and Lifting in the same workout

Exactly! In fact, I would say to stay under 20 miles weekly. That will get you plenty lean and fit, without over doing it.

Not everyone wants to do super intense high impact style training.

Especially if you get older or have injuries. Doing balls out sprints just doesn't sound too appealing.

Or if fat burnage is your top priority and muscle mass doesn't matter. Running more can be better.

I don't mean sprints, though sprints are an important addition to any program

my point is that instead of jogging 5 miles a day, pick up the pace and actually RUN 2-3 miles

as for fat loss, running to the point where your test drops and you lose muscle will cause your metabolism to slow down so that's assinine and counter-productive

run like you mean it

I've tried both....

Cardio before lifting just wore me out, and couldnt lift as hard

Although leaving cardio for after I have to be more disciplined because I'm tempted to skip it sometimes, but I've been good recently about it, thats what I do right now, cardio right after I lift!

Do you inject your testosterone before or after the workout?

 What about your trenbolona?

Watch out. My Mom has AIDS. She probably already passed it on to you.

You're on so much steroids already though, at least you won't need to get a prescription for that when you start wasting away.

I don't either.

I drag a sled in my complex parking lot

I do mountain climbers, froggers, jump squats on a grass surface by the parking lot or in my room.

I can swing a kettlebell in my room too.

You shouldn't be waking on a silly stairmaster or t-mill before or after lifting.

Yeah doing cardio in the gym is very boring. I just jump rope outside, ride my bike, and go on a fast paced hike.

Cardio in the gym is lame as fuck.

Yes I know all about you. Just like Faildo, Moody, and all those other "naturals". I know all about the "natural" bodybuilding world. You all just use lower doses and are better at passing drug tests.

Keep on injecting that test bro. That way your ass will be hard and tight for me when I come over there and assrape you  :-*

drink a shake and sit until 5:30 then do the elliptical from 5:35 til 6:20.

I only have time once a day because I have a job, and a wife, and kids, and other hobbies.  You know normal stuff most people have to deal with.
