Title: Guest posing
Post by: BayGBM on March 24, 2011, 07:59:26 AM
When did “guest posing” become accepted and institutionalized?  In the 1990's?  I can remember a time when a show was a show and that was it.  There was no guest poser; no one had the expectation for one and no one felt deprived if there wasn’t one.  Now, it seems guest posers are the norm.  So much so that they are paid to be there and crowds expect and want to see them—even when they are off season or out of shape.  What’s up with that?  How much are guest posers typically paid?

I suppose it is a nice way for a pro (do non pros ever guest pose?) to make some money, but something is wrong when a guest poser is more of a draw than the contestants on stage.  :-\

Who is the first guest poser you ever saw at a show?
Who is the worst guest poser you ever saw at a show?

i may not be correct but usually at t he nationals and the southern states, the winner from the previous year comes back the next year to pose. in the case of the nationals that person is now a pro.

89 nationals, Mike Quinn guest posed. not sure he won it the year before (i think he was a usa guy).

Ever since I can remember. I remember seeing Zane and Sergio Oliva guest pose in the late 70's at shows down in San Diego.

There has been guest posing since the very early days of bodybuilding.

End of thread.

Were they paid back then?
How high do guest posing "fees" go these days?

I remember Guest Posers showing up in 1979. Tony Pearson. I would guess they paid for his flight, gave him 2 nights in a hotel and $500.   If I see him, I'll ask him.

Back in the 70`s I swa Lou,Arnold,Franco, and Katz at various times guest posing at contests at Mt. Park Amusement Park (mentioned in the book "Pumping Iron").

I have no clue if they got paid but I`m sure at least there hotels, food, and flights were paid for.

Ed Jubinville ran the contests at the park and those guys were all friends of Eds as he was an IFBB official.

Mid-2000's top tier was getting $3000-$5000 plus all expenses.

there was a post which stated ronnie coleman's most was 8k.  if you rememer, dex refused 5k because he thought he should get what ronnie was getting.  jay and ronnie at his height are probably the top dogs. there was a later post which had jay dropping off excess 4-5k jobs to his boy phil.

it seems like a lot.  i couldnt see paying more than 3k plus expenses for 3 mins on stage if i was a promotor.  they make the difference with photo signings and sales and that's all cash.

All those drugs, for those arms...rough.
Juicing since 15.
I'm convinced, there is little correlation between death and steroids.

He has a point in my opinion. I would rather pose nude on webcam than work in mcdonalds.

Working as a guest poser would appear to be a nice compromise.  :)

First show i attended in 79 had a guest poser,he was paid £100,a Mr Universe winner i used to train with in the 80s got between £350-500.i promoted a seminar and guest posing spot for Shawn Ray in 1990 and he was paid £1,000,not sure what that works out to in dollars.

Shawn Ray was the first guest poser that I ever saw.....He was there posing two weeks after the 93 Olympia....He looked unreal.

220 and tight as a drum.....he was signing autographs and taking pictures....looked sharp in his street clothes.....you couldn't really tell what kind of shape he was in with his clothing on.

When he stepped on stage.....totally different ball game......WORLD FUCKING CLASS!!!!!!!!!!

imho.....guest posers add a little flavor to a local show.....it is exciting to see a top level dude right there in front of you. Ray made an incredible living doing seminars and exhibitions during the 90s. He and Labrada and Yates handled their money properly......some others....not so much.

The 100$ question here is: will the blood pressure be relieved by his bald head exploding, his chest opening wide, his eyeballs popping out or his asshole tearing apart?

I'd say it depends on the person and the show. Only show I've ever seen in my life was the post-Olympia GP show in NZ back in 2001 - I went just to see Ronnie.

I wouldn't go again. I can watch the webcast of the Olympia and AC online, but that's about as much as bodybuilding interests me nowadays.

I will go see the Olympia and AC in person sometime in the next 3-4 years, but just for the experience and to check out the expo.

I can recall some guest posers from the early seventies, like Arnold, Franco or Pearl. Dave Draper too.  I'm reasonably certain guest posing was part of some shows as far back as the sixties and late fifties.  I haven't attended a bodybuilding competition since the mid eighties because what's up on the stage shouldn't be there.

Shit.  Branch looks like Gollum if he got the One Ring back.  Fuck that noise.

A guest poser at a contest should be better than the level of that contest. So it's a joke for most IFPP pro shows. Unless it's just for laughs.

The first show I attended in the late 90's had Craig Titus guest posing. I had never seen gh/roid/insulin/whatever gut before that. He looked like he was about to give birth to twins on stage that night.

In 92 at the Jr USA   we had Victoria Sims (small blond 1990 National  lwt winner) Laura Beaudry and the proud owner of Gaspari Nutrition guest pose. VS posed to Janet music with a chair of course...something about Janet Jackson and chairs !!!!!  Beaudry who no one really knew or followed....did ok   but no one knew her...then my idol   Rich posed to THE UNFORGIVEN!    I think he did great  but some bitch writer for MD criticized his condition!!!!!    He posed great   and fuck how he looked,    he ItS RICH FUKKN GASPARI near retirement.  I felt like Kobe watching Jordan! The Unforgiven is on my ipod  and i think of RG every time I hear it!  AND  of course he ended his routine with his patented Gaspari Thinker Pose!

The guys get paid big time money to guest pose...........its an EXHIBITION to meet and greet with fans around the world and to promote what ever products they are sponsored by and sell their own fotos and other stuff .   No they won't be in killer condition  ...its not worth it!   But true fans are happy to see them anyway!  Guys like Mike Matarazzo and jay made/ make big bucks and the fans beg for them to come back!  Guest posing is more friendly to the big guys   Matarazo's  Dilletts, Nassers more....and not much so for the  Shawn Rays and Darrems Charles's.

Jumbo, Vic Martinez, Shannon Dey, and a few smaller names I didn't know.  A few female BBers as well.

The year before, they had no power due to hurricane, so darrem charles did the guest pose on picnic benches outside the N Ft Myers HS cafeteria.
