Maybe Kevin thinks deadlifts are less comfortable than cable rows with 220 pounds?
-
who pays this guy to weightlift all day long?
-
Yes but drinking high amounts of alcohol on a daily basis also scars the liver. And he apparently didn't have any problems with that :-\
-
I would think he never did deadlifts because it made his waist look thick..
-
'Levrolympia' is neither witty or catchy.
Looks and sounds idiotic.

::)
Didn't the video but judging by the thread title........he's right!
-
A lot of bodybuilders don't do deadlifts, some don't even squat...
-
Levrone was also missing chunks of thickness in his back, specifically in detail and lower back...
-
Worthless excersice. I do them maybe once a month.
-
Okay I'll bite, why is DL worthless?
-
The pics of Matt Kroc comes to mind. Powerlifter Matt Kroc decided to do a bodybuilding show. Which show it was i can't remember. What i can remember is that he had a thight waist.
How do you explain that? Can someone post the pics?
-
il be honest and say i dont like doing deadlifts because of putting the weight on and off

You lazy ass ;D
-
Thats why he looked slim next to Ronnie.

He's a GetBigger?

levrone is one of the best ever, only ronny and dorian blew him away from behind, maybe he was right
free weight squats and deadlifts do thicken your waist...
ive got to add, seen a few young'ns doing side bends with dumbells..they must be going for the cutler look
-

Flex blew him away in terms of detail, but not width
Also, Brian Buchanan used to squat heavy, and it never thickened his waist, and Melvin Anthony as well (front, and reg squat, and deadlift)
-
I remember reading the exact same quote in a Kovacs interview. He did however recommend that beginners and intermediate bodybuilders do deadlifts.
-
I remember reading the exact same quote in a Kovacs interview.
Haha it worked out well for him. ;D
-
Yeah, the poor guy found out too late that deadlifts give you that bloated blocky look..
-
But training like Levrone won't give you the Levrone look either.

never used STRAPS and never will..............good way too break your wrist. I just use wrist wraps, elbow braces', knee braces and knee wraps......fuck it, might as wear a bicycle helmet while im at it. lol.

Bet if he had performed more deads like Robins he'd have moved from the .5% super elite bbs on the planet to the .4% extra super elite bbs on the planet.
-
Levrone's back was only average. It was his crazy triceps and equally crazy delts that allowed him to hold his own in most back comparisons.
That said, he had an epic legendary physique. His twisted front most muscular is still unmatched in bodybuilding.
-
people always find reasons not to do deads ... because the are Hard...

shoulda seen him pound jager shots at cancuncantinas in B-more back in the day!

his back was FUCKED up when he turned pro.
check out the video on youtube, it was wide and detailed

I disagree. However I will post this shot where Levone is holding his own (but losing) against arguably the best back ever. And yes, Levrone's arms look bigger and harder than Colemans.
-
Levrone is stronger than 80% of the "pros" ::)
-
Okay I'll bite, why is DL worthless?
LOL!!!!!!!

Only when he drops 10 anadrol a day though.

ronnie is killing him on condition, thickness, detail. that's not even getting onto legs and glutes.
-
squats are way harder
no deads are 10 times harder....
every dealift session i scrape my shins raw
and
you cant cheat on squats.. but you CANT cheat on deads wither you can lift it or you better leave that fucking bar where it is
squates ive seen guys loan up the bar and do quarter squats
no such luck on deads
-
people always find reasons not to do deads ... because the are Hard...
amen. Hard to recover from too if you put real effort in them
-
Maybe you fools that are trying to imply that Kevin is lazy.....because he didn't do deads.....should watch his video.....where he is benching 4 and 5 plates.....and squatting 6 and 7 plates......friggin morons!
oh that's right....we are at getbig.com!
-
Didn't KLo squat and bench pretty heavy, at least up until a point around mid way of his pro career? I'd say squats thicken your waist at least equally, if not more than deadlifts.
Maybe he wasn't too strong with deads, given his big squat & bench numbers.
-

Judging by her girth, your mom must have been a great squatter. ;D
-
hence why he had no back thickness, he didnt squat, hence why small quads, and only did leg curls for hamstrings hence small hamstrings... What a waste of potential, goes crazy on the shoulders, triceps and chest and didnt bother on back and legs - like 65 - 70 percent of someones entire frame

some guys have good calve genes some dont black men are synonymous for having high inserted calves

put it this way i would trade my quads or upper body for calves..
so im glad genetics favoured me in that way ;D

What are big low inserted calves good for? Not running, not jumping, really nothing?

Shawn liked heavy deads too
-
Haven't done them lately, but I prefer stiff legged dead lifts. Only problem is that I have to stand on a box because my arms are too fucking long! Of course, one normally can't lift as much weight with stiff legged deadlifts.

USELESS FOR BBING!!! U S E L E S S.

Why do you do a worthless excercise each month...?

Kevin Levrone:I never did deadlifts because it made my waist look thick

But these guys use so many drugs and have so many muscle fibers that it doesen't really matter; they will grow like weed from whatever exercises they do.

Have you ever seen his first video? And if you're right and he grows no matter what he does, then why should he have been busting his ass in the first place? Why do more if less would give the same results?

Deads are awesome but i saw better overall back mixing things up and not doing them all the time.

No cheating possible? Seriously, I never saw a guy in my gym doing a full ROM dead with their knees bent. Instead they do stiff-legg deads, not going deeper than their knees, and call them 'deadlifts' ::)

maybe if he bit the bullet did some some deads they couldnt have denied him a sandow

Kevin Levrone had the coolest physique ever and is the only huge bodybuilder I would want to look like, next to Dennis Newman. Phil Hernon even said that Kevin was one of the only bbers that just blew him away in person. Not to mention what was rare about Kev probably is he probably wastthe only 265 pound mass monster that most women would find attractive imo.
-
deadlifts are a stupid excercise for mass they dont produce enough time under tension. Besides who gives a fuck about how your spinal erectors are ::) few sets of barbell rows, couple sets of shrugs and chins once per week.. from there it is all drugs

yeah, i think it's simply a matter of genetics. There's an article about this in next month's md featuring dennis wolf.
here's an excerpt:
"the bottom line is that if you are built for power more so than for having an aesthetic type of physique, you will end up with a thick core," he says. Dennis has done more than his share of heavy squats and deadlifts over the years, yet his waist has remained small. "i would advise against avoiding deadlifts out of fear they will give you a blocky waist," he tells us.
They are an excellent exercise for back thickness, and as far as making your midsection grow, that's either going to happen eventually no matter what, or it isn't." He does add that training for pure power and using very low reps is something to be cautious of. "Any time you are trying to develop maximum strength in the squat or deadlift, like a powerlifter would, you are going to force all your core muscles as well as your glutes to work just as hard or harder than your legs or back. That's OK for a powerlifter because it's all about squatting or deadlifting as much weight as you can. But I don't think bodybuilders should do any less than 8 reps on those lifts."
-
from bodybuilding anatomy by nick evans:
primary muscles involved in the deadlift: erector spinae, gluteals, hamstrings
secondary muscles involved in the deadlift: trapezius, latissimus dorsi, quadriceps, forearms
now look at the areas ronnie is really whipping levrone:
what stands out the most is ronnie's superior lower lat/erector spinae development followed by ronnie's monster butterfly butt and his superior hams. all of these areas are involved with the deadlift. i think it's fair to theorize that the deadlift may have been what held levrone back.
-
Rack pulls bar below knee at the end of a back workout will thicken and detail your back and lats like nothing else - try it and see - keep reps above 8 and as heavy as you can - throwing your shoulders back at the top your lats and back contract like nothing i have ever felt before, but you must do it last... the contraction along your lats from under your arm pits right down to your lower lats where they insert above your hips giving that much desired erector low lat tie in... if you are geneticly pre disposed to get a thick waist from deads and squats you will and should find other alternatives but these are both great exercises that should be in "most" BBs list of must do's
Flex had a tiny waist and DL so have alot more of the top guys with small waists - it's all genetics / of story

A heavy deadlift for Wolf is bending over and picking a fork off the floor. He's missing a whole lower back....
-
This is my set-up... best back exercise known to man. Deadlifts with bands from different heights. Here about 260lbs on the bar, tension at the top maybe 660lbs :o :D

deadlifts are the hardest exercise, period
my back is still aching from 2 days ago, cant even do a proper back double bicep atm

It's not me, I'm behind the camera somewhere. :D That guy is way bigger than me and is a bb competitor, which I'm not.
That day this guy hit a max single with about 320lbs of bar weight, after several missed attempts, and I did 4 reps with 450lbs bar weight. But it was his first time using bands so it doesn't truly reflect his muscular strength compared to mine - takes practice to get used to the bands. Using bands the tension is insane, it feels like the traps will tear off the base of the skull any second. :D
This movement will kill the whole back in a way no other exercise does.
if he never did them, how does he know it would make his waist look thick?
Exactly. Waist size = genetics and drug influenced more than training. Kevin had a bad back right? He probably thought deads would hurt his back... when oftentimes it's a cure. :D
-
damn I'd love to have those bands 8)

I don`t believe that squatting or deads makes a guys waist blocky, unless the guy is very short, stocky, and carrying a higher than average bf%.
Total bullshit IMO.
-
if you listen closely levrone said he 'heard' that dl will make waist look thick that's why he doesn't risk doing it...
-
i'm going to try this.
Its awesome bro - your back is pre-exausted from the rows and chin/pulldown movements - this really finishes it off - you really feel all of the muscles of the back contract - really focus on squeezing hard at that throw back with your shoulders . . - obviously you wont be moving the same type of weight as if you did at the start but thats not needed 8) - Let us know what you think .
-
If "bodybuilding" is your goal, you dont need them. At least not in every workout.
BB rows will do the job.
-

I did this for years and highly recommend it. Obv I have never done rack deads nor would I, you need to move the heaviest weight you can. But the best gains I made on my back came from the following routine.
Machine or dumbell pullovers, reverse grip pulldowns on hammer strength or, from time to time, on a pulley station, reverse grip barbell rows, behind the neck pulldowns, deadlifts, hypers. Literally transformed my back over the years.
My reasoning was that midback seems to get hit from everything directly while the lats seem to need some pre-exhaust otherwise they perform more indirectly during rows and deads. In order to really hit my lats doing either exercise, I would pre-exhaust with pullovers (probably my #1 lat building exercise) followed by pulldowns (or pull ups, if you are strong enough) and then move into rows and deads. If I start with rows, I never feel it in my lats. Doing them 3rd I get an intense squeeze. Deadlifts after all of that make my lats burn and ache like no other. Perfect routine IMO. Alternate with overhand rows (barbell only, don't get a damn thing out of db rows) and from time to time add in low pulley rows.
I used to do like a 6 exercise back workout, would take me nearly 2 hours, and my back always responded well.
-
Also FWIW deads will NOT thicken your waist, what kind of nonsense is that? A thick waist means large obliques I suppose, though I have no clue how you can achieve that. Your abdominals and obliques are fairly shallow muscles and fairly resistant to hypertrophy, I wouldn't worry about "thickening" them.
I will say I do front squats and not back squats because I feel back squats build glutes/hips over quads and doing too many back squats will give you a squatty powerlifter look, but deadlifts are a bread and butter.
-
I would think he never did deadlifts because it made his waist look thick..
LMAO!!
