I'd say Jack Vance. I loved his Dying Earth series, especially the Cugel books.
I read a lot of Moorcock when I was a teenager & the first 3 Discworld novels were amusing, but they just kept coming...

Bernard Cornwell is an excellent historical fiction writer. I have read almost all the sharpe books but my favorite are the ones of Thomas Hookston.

Have you read the Saxon stories or the Starbuck chronicles ??? just great reads.Saxon is about Vikings and early England and Starbuck is about the American civil war.
.....I've probably read the entire Sharpe series at least 4 or 5 times.

Starbuck starts a little slow but just keeps getting better with each book...wish he wrote more of them :(
.....I just read "The Fort" his latest and I didn't think it was one of his better ones. :-\
