Which sports are the ones that really count?
basketball (m/w) and football are givens
What about baseball and softball?
Women's soccer = yes, but what about men's?
Tennis should probably count, even if no one can name a single collegiate tennis player. Does golf sneak in?
I'm ok with counting swimming, but I don't know that diving qualifies.

a friend of mine played baseball at the university we went to. it was division 1 and apparently a good team.
he had to beg us to come and watch so they could sell enough soft drinks to get uniforms.
aside from basketball and football , the only other sport that really mattered at my alma mater was wrestling. and by matter i mean people would show up and watch that weren't just friends and family.

Collegiate basketball and football are the big sellers, they get the big media contracts, the big draws, etc. Same with pro basketball and football. But most of these kids go in with intention of not turning pro, if it happens, great. If not, most are just happy with getting on with their lives after college but have great stories for their kids and grand kids. I train a lot of the girls from LB softball (D1) and they have to do the same thing as far as selling and fund raising, there is a lot of travel involved in all of collegiate sports so they have to be subsidized somehow, the school cannot cover everything.

Women's Volleyball is big at the college level, cant catch on professionally esp indoor.

We can add track and feild and lacrosse---Lacrosse players end up in the Fortune 500 companies. Every Ivy League and wannabe Ivy league university has a good lacrosse team. In fact, they put more stock in the lacrosse team than Football or basketball, all except U oF MD, Georgetown, George Mason, George Washington, American, UNC.

The only ones American society as a collective whole gives two shits about are football (#1 by a vast margin) and basketball (men's).

That is pretty regional I think. Maybe in Minnesota/Dakotas and New England. Sort of like wrestling which is big in the Midwest.

The "non-revenue" sports are non-revenue for a reason...nobody cares.
I know... "they matter to some people" ::) "those players work just as hard as the football players" ::)
If those sports were worth watching more people would pay more money to watch.
