Title: "Football High" | Excerpt: "The Power of Size"
Post by: Benny B on April 10, 2011, 04:13:39 PM
Of the 89 players on Trinity High School's Varsity team, 18 of them weigh over 250 pounds. Football observers agree that on average, high school players' size, speed and strength have increased dramatically over the past five to 10 years. As the size of the players -- and the intensity of the sport -- grows, FRONTLINE investigates if enough is being done to keep kids safe. Watch "Football High," airing Tuesday, April 12 at 9 pm on PBS (check local listings).

High school football has never had a higher profile, with nationally-televised games, corporate sponsorships and minute-by-minute coverage on sports websites. In northwest Arkansas, FRONTLINE examines one ambitious high school team working its way towards national renown. With a superstar quarterback at the helm, tiny Shiloh Christian is striving to join the ranks of the country's best high school teams -- teams whose workout schedules, practices and styles of play increasingly imitate the pros. But as high school players grow bigger, faster and stronger, there are growing concerns about the health and safety of these young players, with rising rates of concussions and death from heat stroke. In Arkansas, FRONTLINE documents a tragic story of heatstroke injuries that reveal how weak regulation has created a crucial lack of athletic trainers at most high schools. It all raises a critical question: Has the amped-up culture of high school football outrun necessary protections for the boys who play the game?

Frontline gives good indepth, balanced and sometimes very graphic coverage---they go above and beyond what the networks and many cable tv shows do.

Ok, I just looked the two videos and it looks like a great story, but I have a feeling I know where this might lead. I'm not saying this in negative way.

It's a reflexive reaction from right wing dumbbells like "The Coach".  ::) Its on PBS, so somehow it must some "tree-hugging, liberal, elitist show for people with all that high highfalutin' edjumacation."   ;D

Frontline consistently puts on some of the best weekly documentaries on television. Whether its about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the financial crash, sports, etc.

Like I said....lets see what moral of this story is going to be. Maybe we should just have them start playing flag football ::)

Yeah, Frontline is usually very even handed when it comes to stuff. PBS and NPR get bashed a lot, but they are very fair most of the time, if one actually sits and listens. especially in some of the larger markets. I'll definately tune in for this.

If you've never seen Frontline before, the closest mainstream thing would probably be the America Undercover series that HBO puts out. Here's a famous one they put out about the porn industry in the 80's, if you want to eye ball it, I figure it leans 60/40, left/right on most things.

Yep. Then we have arthritic knees at forty, Alzheimer's at fifty from successive brain damage, and drop dead at fifty eight. But oh, the stories we can tell....over and over and over again...about how we scored the winning touchdown in eleventh grade that put our team in the state championship game.  ::)

Aww...just watch the show, dummy. Hopefully, even if you skip over the big words you'll still get something out of it, "Coach."  :-\

"Handegg" lol.

Gotta love the clips where they show the illegal helmet to helmet hits. Makes the story more dramatic.

Probably because you guys can't do anything else. We use those as tools to turn our athletes in mainstream sports from high school to pros in big, fast dominant athletes....you know, all the things you're athletes lack.

Europe = if you have no talent or skills, lift weights, make no money

USA = If you have talent with skills, make millions.

I see a lot of euros coming here to develop their talent because you guys lack the skills to develop them yourselves. You suck.
