Dear Amy:
My in-laws think nothing about putting a spoon they licked back into the coleslaw or potato salad — or double-dipping chips (taking a bite then re-dipping) into salsa or dips. My kids were taught not to do this.
We've mentioned this to them a few times, but they get offended and believe we are insulting them.
What are the health risks? Maybe if we could explain it from a positive viewpoint, they might understand.
— Always Offended
Dear Offended:
My instinct was that this wasn't really so harmful (despite the famous "double-dipping" episode of "Seinfeld" that has been burned into our collective memory).
And then I made some calls.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention referred me to the Food and Drug Administration.
The Food and Drug Administration referred me to a 2008 Clemson University study.
The question researchers chose to answer is: "Does double-dipping actually spread bacteria and germs?"
They assembled volunteers and used wheat crackers and dips. Ultimately, they found that in just a few double-dips, about 10,000 bacteria were transferred from the eater's mouth to the remaining dip.
According to the director of the study, this is the rough equivalent of kissing someone on the mouth. If the person is carrying an infectious disease, it could possibly be transmitted to others.
So you have to ask yourselves: Are you on kissing terms with your in-laws?
:-X

double dipping is gross :-X
-
I think the mythbusters did an episode on this and found that there is much more bacteria on the chips themselves and in the dip than from double dipping.
I could be wrong though, I always turn my chip around if I double dip.
-
Amy wasn't very helpful :-\ I think we all know double dipping is a no-no. How do you address the situation with the in-laws or anyone else without insulting them?
-
Double dipping sounds like a movie I watched
thirteen times once.

I don't think there's a way to tell someone about it without them getting insulted ... they see no harm :-\
Maybe put a sign up next to the dip and when they see it and ask .. give them the facts on how nasty it is :)

What if you turn the chip sideways so you're not dipping the part you bit ???
-
We know a guy that picks his nose IN FRONT OF YOU...while talking right to your face!
I do not eat anything he has prepared or if there is an open container of nuts or something and he has had access to it, I do not eat them.
Maybe the letter writer should have spoken up earlier....if I would have seen the licked spoon go back in or the double-dipped chip I would have likely said something...but I am tactless and uncouth.

tony does that

I just put extra dip on my chip so there's enough to make me happy and eat the whole chip in one bite ;D

actually my a friend of mine and myself once had an in depth conversation/ laugh uncontrollably episode in a library about that EXACT topic...
if you served poop at a $500 a head restaurant ..on a fancy plate...i BET A $1000 that someone would take AT LEAST 1 bite...just for the fact that they would refuse to believe that they had been served poop! ;D
