Does anyone do pullups with added resistance? I just started incorporating added resistance to my pullups to increase the intensity, overall strength and improve the amount of reps I can do. Normally I can do 5 sets of 10-15 reps without added weight, but I'm throwing in sets with a 25 pound plate and a 45 pound plate. I weigh about 225 and can do 2 sets of the 25 pound plate for 8-10, and a set with the 45 for about 5-6 good reps. I'd like to be able to hit the 45 pound plate for about 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps. Thoughts on adding resistance?
-
you're strong mate, I struggle to pull up my fucking fat ass for a double
-
doing pull ups eithout resistance is pointless unless you're a weak bitch.
do few sets with added resistance, and then after ward super set it with your own bodyweight.
But don't rely on your OWN bodyweight with pull ups, you don't do shit with that...

At least not when you weigh 150lbs...
We had this discussion here before, when you weigh 300lbs like Jason, you don't need added weight. ;)

by the way i weight MUCH more than 150lbs, over 17lbs more, BOOM :D

with OWN bodyweight, ofcourse, but still doing 30 reps, over 20 reps, so they could easily do them with much more added weight

I'm just messing with you.
Actually it was a joke because Jay couldn't even do 5 proper pullups.

yeah I usually superset my last 2 sets with the added resistance
-
And pull ups based on momentum only is good for what?????????????
Now try to do those same 30 actually pulling your way thruthe rep to the top ending with a good squeeze....
-
i do chins with a 45 lb plate
on final 2 workin sets of chins
-
If feeling the need to add extra plates than try one arm pullups/chins for a whole different feel and results from that exercise. Might suggest doing them (2 or 1 handed) from gymnastic rings. Or swivel rings. Gives a more natural pull & twist.
If doing one arm chins than hold the free arm behind the back. Getting extra advanced, after a while, hold a DB in the free hand. One arm (bwt or added weight) seems to hit the lats & arms like nothing else. Good Luck.
-
Only recently got back into doing pull ups, had to work my way up to doing full sets of 8-12.....now I do 3 sets at the start of a back workout to failure but I use a straight bar (well 2" pipe).
-
or just do pullups 3rd in the workout and you won't need extra weight.
if you're fat enough just hold on for dear life
-

This.
This is why I don't take training advice from these boards 99% of the time.
You were trolling right?

Don't you weigh about 130lb after about five years of training? I'll pass on the advice.

135lbs actually ::)... I finally woke up realised how training is supposed to be done... like a jigsaw victim...
-
In related news i love pull ups, one of the best feeling movements. Just alternate between max reps bodyweight and building up weight resistance.
-
fer sure. done properly, 30 ain't happening. maybe half that.

Can anyone here do a one armed pullup?
I'm allmost there now. Using alittle assistance with my other hand on my wrist. @ 240 lbs.

I'm pretty sure I have the strength to do one I just haven't fooled around enough to get the mechanics right I believe. I can do the one hand on wrist pull up all day though. I want to do one where my other arms is just hanging there.

Most people who do chins, should stick to pulldowns as they never do the chins right anyfuckingway!!

resistance is futile

2 people I know can do legit 1 arm chins.
Both were between 155 and 175lbs but could chin with well over 100lbs attached to them for reps.

I can do 85lbs attached for 4-5 reps if I'm feeling froggy but I have only messed with 100lbs once. It was 1 rep with horrible horrible form. How did your buddies manage the 1 arms? I only think about trying them at the gym but don't want to look like any more of a tool than I already am trying to do them.
-
They say you need to be able to chin 185% your bodyweight.
They hung a rope over a chinning bar and started off grabbing the rope with the supporting arm at teh top and doing chins that way. Then very gradually over time moving their hand down furthur and furthur the rope Eventually there comes a point where holding onto the rope wont help at all and you will be able to do a OAC.
I can rep 100lbs for a few reps but never going to be able to do one at my bw.

100% correct.
most are just swinging through a partial range of motion. Those who think pull-ups are easy should try doing them from a dead hang to the point where upper arms press against the torso without any swing. ALL SQUEEZE

I count 0 pull-ups and many partials, nothing manly about that.
-
I doubt people like Dorian and Ronnie, Joel Stubbs JP Fux, etc could do one chin
that's why their backs sucked. but you 155lbers doing one arm chins keep right on a truckin'

You can barbell press 134kg for 6-8 reps. Yeah, you don't need our advice.
-
I've done weighted chins for a long time and I like them but I've never managed to use more than 35lbs with decent form. I was chinning with 40lbs for a few weeks but hurt my shoulder so I backed off for a little while. Have just started back with them.

You will most likely stagnate. Pullups are so bodyweight dependant, it would probably be easier hitting your goal just by losing weight than training your ass off. From people who can do a lot of them, like real gymnasts, they don't do much, if any , bar pull ups. They do stuff like front and back levers on bars and rings, which are more demanding, but have great carryover to pull ups and chins. They are also lean and don't have the heavyweight body type.

How many can do them Bolo Jr style?

nah I'm barely over 150.
This guys is definitely strong. Possibly the strongest pull-up in absolute terms, but ofcourse there are smaller guys like cisco or zef with much better relative strength

Started doing chins again! This was before the workout I am not THAT white but the flash helped.
-

Considering the source, I find this believable. I'm definitely going to try those one-finger chins until I can do a OAC.
-
Don't do the one fingers.
Use the rope trick working lower and lower down the rope with one arm over time. The two people I know did this. However keep chinning also!

I meant just to see if I can. it *looks* easy enough. :P Also I'm having a hard time visualizing the rope trick?
-
Ok so thats a guy hanging one arm on a chinning bar and holding the rope at the top near the bar. Over time move your hand more and more down the rope until it is below your waist. Then you should be able to OAC

yeah that method works...that was nice of you ursus to take the time to make even that crude drawing.

LOL no problem - Took a minute max

As hilarious as this is, it was actually pretty instructional. It makes sense now. Thanks.
Also, wth is going on with your back dude. Are you half of a barn or something?
-
Does anyone not?
Actually, I almost never see people using weights with pullups. Most guys are so heavy they dont even use pullups, they use pulldowns as a substitute.

Ha, yea start high as you can, giving as much help as possible. Even move down 1/2" a week, this is a long term goal not a short term one. You can also do the chins 2-3x week or more if you want
