...ever became one just by running and weightlifting, discuss.

seems like there's more pro athletes who spend less time in the gym than us, yet are bigger faster stronger.

That's because an athletes training is light years a head of bodybuilding training.

A real professional athlete has to train a lot - hard work.

Yeah?
So " The Coach", How would you develop bodybuilding training to get it on par with 'athletes training' ??

What should be done differently?

Great Genetics(plus great drugs in many cases)  + even a half way decent work ethic will trump almost any training. But if you get the right combination of all three, you're in the elite of the elite.

@ Mass243....first you have to decide if you're going to be an athlete or bodybuild because you can't be both.

BB, not so, Genetics then talent then work ethic/mental toughness and in this case drugs ARE the finishing touch. Unlike bodybuilding, its the other way around.

Try training for 5 years 8 hours a day for one event Olympics and then run it around 10secs for the 100 mtrs.Seems worth it.At least that event doesn't have crooked judges.

Yep, very little work ethic in bodybuilding, but drug ethic they don't go over a minute of when have to take their next injection.

So people who track and field are not "athletes"? Because that is what most of their training incorporates--especially sprinters. Running (drills) and the weightroom...

And what about Olympic weightlifters? Not athletes you say?

To become a better footballer you play football.

No amount of weightlifting will ever overcome practise. Though it can help in some aspects to improve/enhance your current skill set.

Try running a marathon while drinking about twenty whey protein shakes while lifting weights.

Cuz that's what it takes these days, playa.

And what about Olympic weightlifters? Not athletes you say?

let me clarify.

*insert track athlete* was faster than 99.9% of the planet by birth.  you and me could run 100 miles a day and sprint til we die and we would always come in last at a high school track meet.

the olympic weightlifters very early on had freak strength that they discovered one way or another, and are only competing against other freaks (we'll ignore the role of drugs in both examples).

my point is any consequent running and weightlifting they do is only to compete against their peers once they're already the elite.

i can't start cleaning and jerking 12 hours a day now and expect to even place at a junior college voluntary meet because there's always some country bumpkin out there or some ghetto kid who will outlift/outrun me.
