you have to pay now, meaning you pay a 10% flat tax, would you be more motivated to work?

 Yeah taxes in the US really suck. Very complicated and fucked up tax sytem.

 You can move to states with no income tax though. Different states have different taxes which is cool.

Of course cause it's lower. It would be fair if it wasn't for the government wasting money.

Welfare payments are complete bullshit. You are paying for people not to work. Can you blame people for not looking for work.

There's some Arab state, forgot which one, where people pay zero % taxes. Still I prefer to stay in Holland, where the taxes are among the highest in the world.
And the answer to the question is: probably not.

I like Holland a lot but the tax rate....how much on average, 50%? or thereabouts?

What are you trying to accomplish and what do you want to buy?  Once you answer that, you can determine where you need to be to fit your needs/wants.

this is in finnish, but anyway it shows the effective combined average income tax rate in usa is 24,30% whereas in finland it's 37,20%...the highest rate, 42,60%, is in italy and lowest, 13,00% in russia....in russia everyone also pays same percentage of his income into taxes, whereas in finland the progression of taxation is one of steepest in the world.

last column shows the the income level after which one is supposed to pay the highest marginal tax, in finland it's 66400€, around 99000$. in usa similar level is way higher, 268600€, approx. 400000$. in switzerland, on the other hand, you need to earn almost 800000$ a year to belong into the highest tax category...
