Title: Wrist strain
Post by: supernick on May 06, 2011, 10:27:03 AM
Yesterday I was doing close grip bench with a thumbless grip and I think I strained my wrist.   I was only doing a warm up set with 135 when I moved my wrist a little bit during the set to readjust it, it started to hurt so I stopped.  Diddnt hurt much after i put it down, so I finished my workout.  Later that night it started feeling like it was throbbing, and today it feels just sore when i move it.  Anyone ever had any problem like this?

That's probably because of the close grip / straight bar combination. As a result your wrist is bent outwards through the motion. This is asking for problems, sooner or later. You can 'fix' this exercise with a shoulder width grip with your elbows inside or by using a EZ bar.

I was using a shoulder width grip with my elbows tucked in , I think I just bent my wrist back to far idk.  Im more concerned with my wrist, hoping its not somthing bad.

If the pain is not over after -let's say- 4-5 days than visit a doc or therapist. In the meantime put some ice on them and open/close your hands for a good blood flow.

These are my friends during pushing / extending exercises

mine took months to heal, though I managed to train around it for the most part

maybe if I had taken time off it would have healed faster . . .

The "training around it" stuff usually doesn't work, but if gives ya an excuse to keep working out. In the end time off would have been better..

There is no need for a thumbless grip, nor any attempt at keeping the elbows in, let the elbows flair as is a natural positioning.....forcing the elbows "in" is what's causing a problem...puts everything against the grain, including the shoulders
