Overhead tricep extensions standing at a 45 degree angle
with the rope, some folks call 'em superman rope extensions.

What's the "1" tricep exercise you would pick for triceps if you only had one to select?

Plain old close grip bench presses.

Low weight crushers (<50 pounds) or heavy (50-100 pounds)?

Fuck skull crushers. "Elbow killers" would be a more appropriate name.
CGBP and some kind of overhead extension (cable or DB, doesn't matter,) -- those are the bread-and-butter.

Aren't Close Grip Bench Presses like a slight variation of skull crushers?

That's way beyond my capability.  My post count isn't high enough to justify such a claim.

Nah, it's more like a normal bench press, but with the hands at roughly 8-10" apart. Bring the bar down to your mid-chest & back up. Can handle almost as much weight as on a normal bench press, and much more tricep involvement. It's a great movement & actually quite shoulder/elbow safe.

I tend to pyramid and don't go very heavy at all (otherwise the pain and soreness is unbearable for me).

I never experienced any elbow problems with skull crushers, just as I never had problems with heavy upright rows, love those.
I really suck at shoulder presses and barbell benches. Both low PB's and cuff trouble.
Really bad squatter, decent deadlift. Must be an individual thing, differences are substantial.

Doesn't feel right for the wrists with a straight bar. Racking the EZbar is a bit troublesome that's true.

1. Close grips.
2.  Dips.
3.  Skullcrushers.

Do skulls later on in the workout, when the tendons are warmed up sufficiently.

The three above are for mass.  For cut/shape, look to cable exercises.

I lie down reversed on a bench press and use a shoulder width grip. I like some variation, so during another workout I do lying single DB extentions. I like the balancing work, it feels more natural, esp for the joints.

Flat Barbell Bench as basass as you can go.

I never do arms and kill it on the heavy exercises.  If you kill it on flat bench, incline, etc, you dont need to do tric seperate.

With weight---skull crushers, and one arm dumbells skullcrushers, while having your front half on the bench--head off, they could be called tricep extensions

Without weight-dips, elbows facing out, and three point pushups (hands facing like two cars passing)

Skullcrushers and once failure has been hit, continue and conclude the set by doing close grip benches with the bar, almost like a superset. Fries the arms like no other exercise - even my forearms get a workout from that.

That's exactly how I feel after my routine, unable to even move my arms..

I also typically dress exactly as the animation provided below.  A skin-tight tanktop and a pair of skin-tight black shorts that always fall high above the knee, while wearing nothing but socks..

I've had problems over the years with every tricep exercise, but in the end I think the exercises I really like are

1.  Close grip bench press
2.  Cable pushdown (all variations, especially the one 1 and groink posted).
3.  Dips

If I do skull crushers, I'll do them off the floor these days.  Easier on the elbows.  I also like the seated overhead extensions with a dumbbell, but those can be touchy (again, elbows).

finish with cable crossovers with an added one-arm downward punch (each side) and static extension (burns like hell)

For me skulls and seated extensions are the best but they both mess up the elbows
Normal dips I feel in my shoulders and chest I only feel dips in my tris when I do them knuckles pointed in
Close grip I feel in the chest once I start going heavy.. I already have enough chest development which is why I use close grips sparingly

Seated French Press....back supported on Preacher Bench.

Skulls and Dumbell Skulls

Triceps Dips Between Two Benches

Never use a rope on extensions or pressdowns.......trust me on that.

Cambered handle or v-bar is much more effective.........fuck you if you don`t take heed!  ;D

Those that listen, can thank me later on down the road.

Skulls and seated extensions are king but they are really bad for the elbows
Why do you advise against using the rope attachment?

some of the best, most elbow-sparing sets i've ever done have been with the rope.

No need to have bad elbows if movements are done correctly.

I don`t know why but I find the rope inferior........hard to explain.
Title: Re: What tricep exercise do you swear by?
Post by: wes on May 11, 2011, 06:00:36 PM
Let me add that if your elbows bug you from skullcrushers, don`t do them to the forehead, but just below the crown of the skull.

Way too much pressure on the elbows if done to the forehead or nose, plus it`s a good way to whack yourself out.

Skulls and close grip bp. I normally workout chest before tris so my elbows are warmed up although my right elbow still bothers me every few months.

weighted dips with a 140lb db on top of my 265 lbs and overhead db extensions 1 arm at a time up to 80 lbers is what brought my arms to over 22" cold.So in my opinion the best.

Explain this..

I'll pulldown each side, left and right and hold one side in a static hold. The triceps will already start burning. Then I will proceed to do a "crossover" but concentrating more on the extension of the elbow (triceps activation) than the crossover that actually compresses the pec.

In the process, each time  I crossover with movement and extend with the opposing arm, the other will have forcefully pushed (punched) downward and extended into an extension. There is no balance, at least not the kind you would get with two hands on a pushdown bar.

So basically, you are doing a type of burn, but you are also doing a compound exercise. The triceps on both arms will be burning the whole time whether it be from the process and R.O.M of extension, or just a static (balancing) downward hold.

I guess it's not that easy to explain. They work for me as a finishing move. The triceps pop and the whole UB gets some final work B4 I go home...

Here's a trick I do.

Two arm kickbacks. bend over at the waist and try and keep your body parallel to the floor. do your kickbacks with both arms at the same time, and at the top of the movement turn your palms to the ceiling...or at least try to. Really snap them and flex your tris hard....report back to me tomorrow.  8)

If you really bust your ass on barbell flats and inclines, your tries will explode.   Most of the fags at the gym I work out at spend more time doing tris than they do flat bench, inclines, dumbbell inclines, etc.

GMAFB.  If you want want real caveman strength, you need to fuck off with the pussy machines and tri exercises and bust your ass on the barbell presses and incline barbell lifts.

At 36 yo 210 lbs - last night alone - 315 x 10 flat bench, 315 x 7 incline bench barbell.  Focus on the basics and you will grow.  focus on rops, cables, machines, and you are a fag and a pussy.

Well my elbow is fu*ked at the moment so I can't do much....manage a few sets of v bar push downs and a little overhead work.

When at 100% I like dips and heavy overhead extensions with a d/b, uni or bilateral.

That's a great finisher, but why with 2 arms? Doing singles I can put more focus more on the contraction, since there's always a strong and a weak side.
On a vid I saw a guy doing them with his bicep on a ankle pad, I will try that one later.

I see these skinny little pussies in the gym doing cable push downs, rope push downs, etc.  Not one of them can bench over 315.

To build your arms and tries - you need to kill it on the basics first - incline barbell, flat barbell, and incline dumbell press mostly.

If you have all that energy for tries after that, all it means is that you are going too light on the basic exercises.

You are a fag and a pussy.

I'll take anyone on at any time at any gym on any lift pfb.  i'm clean as as whistle at 36 210 and will outlift most.  clean my whole life.

If you do your basic exercises right for the big body parts like Chest, Back, Legs, etc, the smaller ones like arms are easy and ancillary.

The weaklings and pussies at my gym who can barely bench 225 do arms all the time and neglect the basics and wonder why their arms dont grow more.

You cant be a bitch at the gym focusing on arms and abs and expect to grow.   I have been at this for years, competed many times, competed in track n field events  in the throws at D1 level, and know the deal.  I have these 20-30 year old fags always like "yo bro - what you takin?"

I'm like - hey idiot - who is here Friday night killing it on bent over rows, squats, bench, militaries, etc?

No easy way to bigger arms.   People need to STFU - put the cell phones away, tell their boys to go away, and just pop on the thrash metal and go nuts on the basics like barbell bench, incline barbell bench, deads, squat, bent over rows, etc.

Otherwise - have fun being Jersey Shore twink who cant bench over 225 or squat over 275.

Otherwise - have fun being Jersey Shore twink who cant bench over 225 or squat over 275.

go back to reading brawn.............. why the hate on training arms, the show peice of a bodybuilder

as i said in the training forum, for me over head extension with ez bar is the king, kills the long head, but kill your elbows also!

I'm not hating at all - I'm just stating that most people in the gyms i go to train arms far more than they do the big body parts and than wonder why they are not growing etc.  They are worried about what supps to take, etc, whren in reality, most people would grow like a MOFO if they did more of a caveman workout than a machine or cable based workout.

I have been at this for almost 20 years now and seen everything.   I have done track n field events for throwing, bodybuilding events, MMA, etc, and seen so much bullshit over the years.  Im 36 now and stronger than I have ever been.   I focus on basic lifts - squat, bench, military, deads, bent overs, etc, everything else is secondary.

If you really want to explode, if you are a novice or newbie - just focus on basic lifts and forget the cables and machines.  If you are dieting for a show - you do what you have to.

For the long run, basic lifts are what works, and for tris - nothing better than dips or close grip flat bench.

But you're still a turd.

Thats ok, I have thick skin.   We have had a flood of teens in the gym where i go lately and all they want to do is arms, arms, arms, arms.

Most of these clown never touch the leg press or squat rack.   To make matters worse, these dorks will come up to me and be like "yo bro - I'm going to Vitamin Shoppe tommorow what should I get?"   They are all on the cell phones, loafing around, terrible gym ettiquette, rude, weak as shit, etc.

I tell them to see me at 8pm on Friday at the gym and I will tell them.    No one ever shows up.   The key, for the long run, is basic exercises.  Incline Bench, Squat, Military, Deads, etc.

Once you hit over 30 years old, if you dont have a good foundation  - you are done.  I see this all the time - dudes with a decent upper body - no legs, no cavles or hams, and cant really do much and get injured alot.

Bottom line - for the long haul - basics and caveman workout is what works for size, power, strength, and endurance.

Not at all - I have done shows, and do a ton of other shit beside lifting.   I just see the same ole same ole in the gym I go to with people always pissed off their arms are not bigger who also avoid lifting the basics.

To be honest, you're right about the bs in the gyms.  I too am over 30.  33 on saturday.  I've noticed that the past 5 or so years, everyone under 20 is yapping on a cell.  Also, your note about flip flops or even slippers is true.

High schoolers are only going to work a bodypart to impress others, and that's arms.  That's why they hit them all the time.  16 year old kids don't care about how much you hack squat etc.

You've moved up from turd to dry shit fyi.

Yes...and i agree with that...but once you have the foundation that's when you expand your repertoire to include more specific movements to fine tune the mass into an ill creation

i prefer dumbbels...couple of sets of lying db tricep extentions followed by some close-grip db presses, sometimes incline where you can actually get a longer rom and better stretch...then i also like to have a 1-2 sec peak contraction at the top, somehow i find it very effective especially with triceps...another exercise i also like to use is standing one-arm cable tricep extention with an underhand grip, therefore i can hit that one head of tricep that often is a bit neglected...

I think pushdowns is the best exercise. I hear people swear to close bench presses all the time, but it never ever did the trick for me, and so I never do them. They are probably good though, I think I just have bad genetics to grow in that area, kind of like Coleman and Markus Ruhl.. But they have grown significantly larger the last year, and I owe it all to hevy pushdowns. My 2 cents.

Always had excellent genetics for triceps so I rarely train them as they overpower my biceps as it is. Usually chest training would stimulate them adequately enough. The times I do train them it'll be right after training chest. I'd do 2 sets of pushdowns to failure and 2 sets of dips to failure. That's about it.

problem is it wrecks elbows

why use support to extra damage your body.... in this case
a I either lighten up the exercise .. in my reckless stupid days Ive done this with an 180 now... i never go past 130
b use the exercise less or stop using it altogether

You underestimate machines my friend. At least 50% of all my training is done on machines and my muscles still feel annihilated the next day. It's about intensity, form and heart. Granted, the meat and potatoes of all my muscle groups are still done on free weights but I include machine work FAR more often now than I did in my 20's, and I'm the better for it.

95% of the people you see in any gym will never get anywhere, given free weights, machines or drugs. Their heart just aint in it, hence the lack of progress and inevitable blaming on this or that. I can fuck up my chest just as bad on machines than I could with free weights. Or back, or legs, or arms. As long as there's resistance, there's a chance for muscle being built.

for overall arm pump and for the sake of time i usually superset arms... 1 arm overhead tri extensions, dbell curls... barbell curls/ bench dips... cable pushdowns and hammer curls... 2-3 sets each... usually 8-15 reps...sometimes more, sometimes less depending on how i feel

i really think for tris and bis its always best to really feel the muscle you are working so go lighter and squeeze harder... i see knuckleheads curling huge weight with shit form all the time with 15inch arms and big delts lol

5 ' 8  205-210.  A lot is technique TBH.

I can do about 8 no spot full reps on incline.   About 10-12 on flat.
