Title: L.A. Noire
Post by: tu_holmes on May 16, 2011, 07:49:31 PM
Got my copy a day earlier... For the Xbox360 myself.

Rockstar may have a game of the year here... The facial animations are AMAZING.

I've only played about an hours worth, but it's absolutely fantastic.

I really want to check this out but I'll wait a bit because my expectations are pretty high after all the hype. I guess the replay value will be pretty lame.

Yeah I got Mortal Kombat too.

Question, I hated all the Grand Theft Auto games, will I hate LA Noir?

What did you hate about GTA?

I don't know how anyone could have hated gta4, the story was great but the game play can get repetitive after a while, especially having to drive back to a scene if you fail the first time.

I haven't had that issue with LA Noire... As a matter of fact, if I've died in a footchase or something, it puts me right back at the beginning of the scene... Not an annoyance like GTA4 had.

The things I hated the most in  GTA were the car chases and dealing with the freaking wanted levels and having to get to the safe zones.

It's not a sandbox game like GTA.  I'm hearing really good reviews from people I trust on this stuff, tu-holmes included.

I have been playing it for 3 days, no issues on my 360.

I don't do the PS3 anymore... Ever since PSN went down, It's been a paperweight.

Yeah, so I was bored and picked the game up today and I'm already on the fifth case in only a few hours playing. I certainly hope this gets better as it goes along because right now I'm having some regrets. The only thing that's been kinda impressive are the facial expressions but even with the hints off the game totally directs you to the offender without much real detective work. You would have to be pretty stupid not to figure it out thus far unless the objective if the game is to only score points .Without spoiling parts of the game I can least mention That in one of cases all you do is ask like 4 questions and you basically have the thing figured out. There is 0 replay value in this game unless you wanna get a perfect score on figuring out what to ask and so far I've only missed getting like 3 of those. Playing this again when you already know the outcome to get the other couple of question correct hardly seems like fun.

There's still a ways to go, (15 cases I think), so maybe I'll be surprised. So far I think there's more hype to this than substance.

The first 3 cases are technically "training cases" so they don't count... once you get into homicide the story gets much better and things start to fall into place.

My thoughts exactly. This is one of those games that are fun and interesting to play but after you beat it....that's it. If you haven't done it, even just for a couple of months, Gamefly is a good investment for these types. I only pay like $9 a month and get games like this. Portal, LA Noire, Dark Rain ect..cool to play, beat it in a couple of days, no real replay value. $9 is better than $65 per game purchase.

Im not bailing on it until I get way further into it and see how it goes. Just expressing some concern over the purchase so far. Thanks for the ray of hope though. Lol.

I enjoy it, but it's my type of game you know.

I agree in premise, but I want to add that paying $60 doesn't seem to be the norm anymore, since Amazon, etc...always seem to have gift card deals, and stuff to mitigate the price.  I saw Noire straight up for $45 at places.

i haven't had a problem and i got the game the day it was released, which btw is good but not great, it's a little repetitive

i think a bigger problem is the game being on 3 disks (like you're still playing final fantasy 7 on psx in 96) and having worse graphics on the 360 :D

As opposed to someone who lists Halo as one of the worst games of all time, doesn't understand NPD data, and recommends games with sex and self mutilation to 14 year olds?

haha i think halo is the most overrated game ever, not the worst i was just stirring the pot a bit  ;)

i'm willing to bet there are more 14 year olds that play mature games than those that aren't allowed

what 14 year old doesn't watch r rated movies?

what are the great games today that don't have excessive violence?

Oh wait... you're right... I went back and read the thread... Apparently the subtlety of my point was lost on you in that thread.

My point was that I didn't know what the exclusives are on the PS3 genius... because their exclusives were unknown basically.

God... I wasn't serious about that... Hell, I was just pulling a game out of a hat at the time.

Talking exclusivity is pointless... no one makes better exclusive games than Nintendo.

On the Xbox you get Halo.

On the PS3 you get Metal Gear Solid? (Is that even an exclusive?) Banjoo Kazooie? I dunno what's exclusive on the PS3 honestly.

Let's be clear though, none of them will compare to whatever Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Super Smash Brothers type of shit on the Nintendo machine.

for a guy that claims to be involved in the industry, you should be well aware of the awesome ps3 exclusives

but hey keep playing mario and donkey kong, 1996 never ends in your house ;D

I play the games that are worth playing on ALL of the systems... You are kind of a clown by being a fanboy you know.

Lots of great games come out and I like to play them.

I'm more than involved...

As a matter of fact, I have more than a little proof.

This is from the Medal of Honor credits... If you wanna smell what I'm cookin'... look about 1/3 down and take a big whif.

Mirrors edge was better for me on the PS3.
Uncharted
Metal Gear Solid 4
God of War III
Killzone 2

Now that I'm much further into the game my final verdict is 7/10. I dont think much more will change in the game to change my mind unless the ending totally blows. The actions get a bit boring/repetitive. The side games are lame. Some of them feel totally  pointless and nothing but empty filler.  The story is alright, the cool facial stuff becomes less important  after awhile of playing and the whole point of it eventually gets kinda lost when you're busy having to read the subtitles to understand everything thats being said, instead of watching for facial expressions. Some puzzles suck as well, especially when the game actually figures them out for you.

I had a lot more fun playing GTA4.

Just as a note, since it's the LA Noire thread...

1.6 Million copies sold in North America (in the first 5 days) and the UK (only 2 days).

Comparatively, Red Dead Redemption did 1.9 Million in that span.

I am quite sure we'll see a sequel with these numbers.

Yeah, sometimes I find that these games have volume issues, or some of the dialog overlaps, sometimes the charecters don't even speak while their lips move, certain bugs like that and I don't want to miss anything. I think the manual even recommends it.

Some. Yes. But I find other things new and refreshing.

Like how you search and find clues. The vibrating controversy when you get close. Moving the stick to focus in on a clue.

All very cool ways to not ruin the immersiveness. I did that.

Every time I watch someone talk. I'm still blown away. The peoples faces are identical to their real life counterparts.

Did you notice how many actors were in this thing?

No worries Earl.  I agree to a point about the R rated games, but the content in Heavy Rain I think would be a bit much, over their head, and possibly boring to them.
