  I think no one can surpass Laurence Olivier as Marcus Crassus in "Spartacus". That performance was epic. Honorable mentions go to Pacino in "Devil's Advocate", Gerard Depardieu in "Jean De Florette" and Christoph Waltz as Hanz Landa in "Inglorious Basterds".

  The best ever is Alec Guiness. No one can ever match him. Ever. He is the only one I can call a true thespian.

  As for recent performances, the greatest ever by far is Bruno Ganz's as Hitler in "Der Untergang".

  If we are talking about live actors, Ganz is by far the greatest. He makes Pacino, DeNiro and Anthony Hopkins look like street performers. He is that good.
