Do you basically get access to any book being sold on Amazon?

I like the feeling of an actual book but if I had my choice I would just get an Ipad or similar device. Download free e-books from various sites on the internet. Fuck paying for e-books. It just seems for a little bit more money the Ipad can provide so much more functionality.

I heard the advantage of Kindle is that it doesn't rot your eyes like a computer screen does; I for one cannot read more than an hour or so on a computer screen without problems.

I know what you mean about reading on a computer. I guess I am used to it. It takes a while for me to re-focus after reading for awhile. Everything is blurry at a distance for a minute or 2.

I have a kindle and an Ipad, I honestly enjoy reading more on the Ipad, you can turn the brightness right down to the point where you can read the text on the ipad but theres zero 'dazzle', only way Id buy a kindle again is if I read predominantly outdoors, as the ipad sucks for this.Also if you want to read pdfs, like technical learning books then the kindle blows for this, get the ipad.

the kindle is optimize for reading, isn't back backlit. if you want to read with a flashlight in your eyes for several hrs, then go get an ipad. i think 90% of amazon's store is available for kindle.

Personally I love collecting books, it's a perversion of mine. I'm not satisfied till I fill up an entire room.

If you do not have a big monitor then get one. Then take advantage of the space and open your window to fill the screen... Then increase font size until you can easily read long documents without fatigue.
As someone else said for just a little more $$ you get tons more functionality from an iPad. Having said that I do not use the iPad for reading books--ever. And I do not recommend it for that.

I use the Kindle daily. You can convert pdf's etc, to the Kindle format in seconds using MobiPocket Creator.
Free internet, with the higher end model, too which is a bonus.

you get the amazon kindle app + a ton of free books (most classics are free)
on top of that you get web browsing, thousands of apps, etc. etc.
the kindle is one dimensional and if I'm not mistaken the original is monochrome
for an extra $200 you have the power of a laptop (minus cd drive) in a tablet
you can even run photoshop lite on ipad.

A friend has a Nook and likes it a lot. It's the standard one, not the Nook Color so it has a user replaceable batter. The iPad's battery is not user friendly, i.e., you will have a difficult time getting to it, if at all. You will also be hard pressed to read an iPad or Nook Color in bright sunlight, not so the Kindle or standard Nook as they use what has been termed "digital ink" for their display. I'd liken it to an electric Etch-A-Sketch. For reading a book Nook and Kindle seem the way to go.
An iPad certainly does more, but then a Net Book probably does as much and more than an iPad, and so on. I'm constantly thinking of getting an eReader, but I want an easily replaceable battery and the ability to get magazine subscriptions (in color). I thought the Nook Color was going to be it, but not with that dumbass batter setup. Any recommendations?

The battery lasts 10 hours+ why would you ever need to replace it ? the ipad charges up very quickly as well
as far as reading in sunlight, I do it all the time, I have about 1,000 books/magazines on my ipad and they're a joy to read, esp. the magazines with full color pics and layouts (something you won't have on a nook or kindle)

no comparison, I read in the sun all the time, the brightness/inversion is fully adjustable on ipad also fonts and color

Yes. I read outdoors and/or for extended periods of time and the Kindle is perfectly suited for both situations. The Kindle has one of the longest lasting batteries per charge of anything I've yet come across too.

If for example the iPad can be charged 500 times before it begins to lose its life and you make the mistake (which I would not do) of plugging it in after each use you, so you'll have a fully charged battery in the event you need to, you will go through the battery's life in relatively no time. It seems cheap of Apple, kinda like they way they still refuse to put Blu Ray in any of their computers. They do the battery bullshit with their newest laptops as well. FTN. ;D
Apple makes great stuff, but I want to be able to easily replace the battery myself when the time comes. Glad you like yours and you are not alone as others I've questioned are very happy with their iPads but several of them have told me the screen sucks in bright sunlight and its too hard to read outdoors because of that. Love reading ebooks (via Kindle and other apps) on my android phone, crap in sunlight though. Wouldn't buy a Kindle though regardless of how cheap, just more junk to carry around, phone+netbook all I need on the move.

My iPod touch that I've used extensively for the last three years still has excellent battery time. When replacing the battery becomes an issue you're probably already on your way to getting a new generation instead.

This what friends have told me, but I find it unconscionable of Apple all the same. Rat bastards, no, make that fucktards, those guys at Apple. ;D A woman I know is getting ready to buy an iPad to replace a Windows based Net Book for when she travels. She doesn't have a lot of music to take along and I'm unsure about any movies she might have so it'll probably be fine for her. Thanks for the reply!

I also like the feeling of a book in my hand but a friend knows I like to read a lot and recently gave me one as a gift.
I'm still trying to get used to it but I always have a problem finding the 'page' where I left off the last time I used it. Unlike a real book, you can't simply bend the page in half.
Google "The Novel Network" where you can join up for a $60 lifetime membership allowing you to download 1,000's of books throughout your lifetime. I have not joined this program yet so I can't tell you if it's worthwhile or not.
I gotta take this opportunity to encourage each of you GetBiggers to read 'The Dancing Wu Li Masters' which is supposedly the easiest way to learn Quantum Mechanics (or ABOUT QM).
FALCON .... I DO RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THIS BOOK AND READ IT FROM COVER TO COVER. You may find it to be of great interest, but the first 60 pages or so are boring. After that it grabs you by the nutsack and keeps you interested.
