Title: Dorian Yates - British National Championships 1986.
Post by: suckmymuscle on May 21, 2011, 12:30:11 PM
He was "only' 228 lbs here. Even though Dorian lacked his trademark dryness here, I have never seen so much detail on Dorian. At the 1996 German Grand Prix, when he was at his best ever, he was carrying 40 lbs of muscle more and even drier, but even then he didn't have as much muscle definition as at the 1986 BNC. What do you guys think?

Stimulate, don't annihilate.

Dorian was his own worst enemy.

Check out the results of his HIT nonsense, in comparison to the lightweight "Pump" workouts championed by Paul Dillet.

The results speak for themselves. Train Smarter, Not Harder

Uggggghhhhhh...yeah, that is why Dorian has six Sandows and Dillet has none. Great logic there.

everyone always says dillet trains light... where do people get this idea?  not saying he didn't, just wondering why everyone thinks this?

only video i've ever seen of him lifting hes doing 5 plates a side on some hammer strength looking overhead / incline press.

He trained incredibly light. Do you know what was his main pec exercise? Cable crossovers. Dillet did not have a very high level of development except for his arms and delts. He had great arms and delts due to his freakish genetics and that is it. Huge arms and delts, and he looked huge from the front because his clavicles are so wide. At everywhere else, he lacked muscular thickness and was very underdeveloped. His pecs, for instance, were very thin and the only reason they looked big is due to the big varicose veins which made them look much bigger than they actually were. The same for his back, which was bad even by NPC Nationals standards, let alone for a guy who competed at the premier professional show. When he turned to the sides, he looked like a fitness guy.

Steroids can only work where you lay the work for them to operate...if you take steroids and have wide clavicles and do lots of side laterals but not heavy military barbell presses, your delts will become incredibly wide, but they will never look thick. Even for steroid users, muscle thickness comes from compound movements done with free barbells. The free bar demands you to mobilize a lot more muscle fibers to balance the weight, and compound movements recruit a lot of muscles at once allowing heavy weights which recruit far more motor units. All the thick bodybuilders(Ronnie, Doz, Stubbs, Branch Warren, Kai Green) base their workouts on compound movements with barbells and dumbbells.

while i agree Dillet was a phenominal bodybuilder, to say he would have won sandows is ..... i do not think so.
first he was to tall... you will never see a mr olympia at 6´2...
i myself am tall , 6´2 as well, and the mass just does not look the same on a 6´2 tall guy.
he did have awsome legs, and arms and shoulders.... even chest while flat was impressive...
but! when you are tall there is usually this gap in the midsection... the midsection seems longer as with someone shorter.... giving the illusion of a very small waist , which he combined with wide shoulders. this gives the bodybuilder a very athletic appearence.
but also giving the appearence of being a bit lanky in some poses.... again compaired to shorter bb...
and judges prefere shorter and compact looking bb over the tall athletic ones....

being tall sucks in bodybuilding.....

NO, train harder, not smarter. Anyone remember the BTFO where Paul sits on a leg extension machine on his phone? Epic laziness. That scene right there described Paul's philosophy. He could've been so much more.

He just never had enough heart to, he didnt want to put in the work.
One of the best potentials in history. Just did his pussy workouts and let his genetics carry him.

I disagree. Out of the top of my head I can name several bodybuilders with better quads: Jean-Pierre Fux, Nasser, Platz, Levrone, etc. Even lesser pros who were never worthy of competing in the big pros shows, like Paul DeMayo, had much better quads. And what about hams? They are also part of the legs and Dillet's hams sucked. Face it: Dillet only had incredible arms and delts and was very wide from the front, but he was a subpar bodybuilder who relied on his arms genetics and his genetics for big ugly veins to look much more developed than he was. What you don't understand is that a lot of bodybuilding is illusion. Dillet's pecs were extremely pathetic and they only looked big because they had huge veins crossing them. When he turned to the sides, there was nothing there! The same goes for his back: he had no thickness from the sides at all. Actually, when it comes to back he had neither thickness nor width. Why can't you understand this?

Yep. Dorian himself said that Paul was one of the very very few guys he was concerned about as Paul had everything going for him. Too bad he had the stamina of a cancer victim and the heart of a baby seal. A year in the dungeon with Dorian and we would've had an epic battle on our hands. Dillet could've been the 'Yates' of the 90's. Wasted opportunity due to epic laziness.

With the exception of his calves, Dillet's entire rear view was pathetic. Seriously, are you guys talking about the same Dillet I am? Saying that Dillet's pecs and back were great is so retarded that I wonder if you guys are joking. In fact, Dillet's entire torso was very weak for a man his size and for a top pro.

The pic of Arnold and Coleman doing the side tri is not to scale.  Coleman (guessing) outweighs him by anywhere from 15-60 pounds, depending on the year.

comparing the guys from the 90s to the gen.competing now, although i think the guys in the 90s were better, and dorian had the best back ever,it seems likemore of the top guys are closer in back developement, where in the 90s you had yates, ray and wheeler in top 6 and fux and ronniein top ten the rest had average or awful back developement, now you have jay, phil, kai, victor, dex etc in top spots at the o.all real close in back comparisons.maybe they all learnt a lesson, you aint gonna be mr.o. without a great back.

His back sucks for a professional and for a professional that weighed 275+lbs it wasn't up to par for his structure. his delts and arms totally dominate that entire pose and his back appears no wider than a guy who weights 215lbs  :-\  I think even if he learned to pose it 100% it still wasn't going to be that much wider not to mention the lack of detail & thickness

Yep, you guys who claim he had a great back are nuts. You confuse the delt and arm muscles with the back muscles. Two different things. And I am sorry, but having big veins running over your chest, making them loook freaky, does not mean having a great chest. Dillet's pec muscles were pathetic in terms of thickness. He turned to the sides and he looked like a fitness instructor.

You act like it's impossible for me to have been 280 lbs. Actually, I've been heavier than that. I am 1.94 meter tall with very big bones. Nasser is 5'11 with a medium frame. What is so incredible for a guy my height with big bones on enormous amounts of steroids to be 300 lbs? I was taking 2,500 mg of test a week literally ten ampoules of Durateston. If I claimed to be ripped at that weight that would be a different story, but still not impossible given my height, bone structure and the amount of test I was running. 300 lbs for a guy who is almost 6'5 with big bones and full of testosterone is not much especially if he is about average bodyfat.
