Ancient history is one of my favorite subjects. While we really don't know how much of it was fact or fiction, I still enjoy reading the ancient tales. So Getbiggers, who do you think was the greatest? Greek, Roman, Persian, Egyptian, British, etc.... My Favorite would have to be Greek, although I love Roman history as well.

For the record, I don't think America will ever reach the heights of these previous civilizations. America has only been around for 200+ years. We have a long way to go before people will look at us in 1000 years as more than a footnote in history. Don't know if we can last that long :'(

In all seriousness, it's tough to compare. Some would say that the US, and the world, has accomplished more during that 200 yr period than any other civilization did. I think one of the things that makes studying older civilizations more interesting is that they developed in more of a bubble with occasional interaction with other civs. Whereas in the modern world it's just one big giant clussterfuck with very little separation. The isolation made for a purer form of development and creativity.

Sure our advances in technology are far greater than other civilizations. But we owe alot to those cultures that helped us form who we are today. Just think if the persians conquered the greeks, or if the british had defeated that small "uprising" in the late 1700's. How much of what we know today would be different? Just look at our capital buildings..... They look very Greek/Roman to me.

There is no doubt that we have continued to utilize much of what was learned from past civilizations. In fact, there are some things that we can't figure out how to replicate by using the technology that was available during a certain time period. I think the British empire and the time period it was developed are remarkable. It was a time period when all the major nations were scrambling for power/control on a global scale.

check your history books and see how much territory the Roman Empire controlled at one point. It dwarfs the U.S. It was one of the reasons why they ultimately fell, too much territory to govern/control.

Define great. Largest land area? Manpower? Technological advancement? The organization and harmony of its people?
Its really a matter of opinion. But to be in the running, they have to have all of the above. Thats why the Monguls don't do it for me. They were nomads for the most part.

Based on that when it peaked in the earlier 80's, it possessed the most destruction power in the history of the world. Yes, the most ever possessed by one country.
No other empire comes close. Roman empire was known for it's mighty army but compared to USSR it disappears.

Persian empire was definately one of the greatest in history. It is widely known that Alexander was so impressed with the Persian Empire, that he started to adopt some of thier customs' much to the dismay of his greek army.

The Empire. Emperor Palpatine blew shit up. I mean entire planets. Designed and built the death star, and ruled the known universe for about 30 years till he was murdered by rebels. That was a long long time ago though, in a galaxy far far away.
