I had heard stories but today was my first encounter with them when I called about a late order on 2 different occasions and the customer service people who picked up had a bizarre, very fake American accent and were desperately trying to hide the 'colour' of their native accent. I don't care where they are from, just about my order. I am wondering if this is really as commonplace here as I have heard? or it is stigmatised to speak as they normally would? Has anyone else every encountered this?

Maybe they think it will sound clearer in the case of the phone representatives as well but to be honest it is more annoying that clear. They should just speak the way they normally do. I just care about my order. Weird stuff.

You have to insult them, then they will go back to their normal language.
I bet a "I can't understand a fucking word you are munching there, you curry stinking gum guzzler, speak fucking Oxford English like your British masters told you to or i will torch motherfucking Hounslow, you fucking Gandhi" will make them forget the American accent pretty fast.

A lot of them now are trying to sound "American", so that they don't turn off people, and have people yell at them...and to subconsciously think that they are based in the US...odd how the companies are hiring these call center companies that are based in India because it's cheaper, when they have to be trained over again, so who pays for that?

Everyone loves an American accent. Ask anyone.

They aren't in the UK, they are obviously in India, where a lot of companies outsource their customer service.

Or the Aussie one...you are blessed with both.

Everyone has their preference. For me a neutral South African accent sounds best, closely followed by the Welsh lilt but it's all just a matter of preference. In this case I just cared about my order.

The Irish accent is the coolest. American females have brutally annoying accents IMO

For me a upper Manhattan accent sounds muh more eloquent than deep Texas "i have a whole package of chewing gum in my mouth" American, but nothing beats the warm sunshine of south californian or the fruityness of Hawaiian.

Scottish accent (i.e, my accent) is the best, especially when you live in England. Men fear it and women drool over it.

The one that is pretty soft-spoken but deep sounding - it has been diluted somewhat from many years of living in England but it's still quite pronounced. I'm from Glasgow originally but there's no way in hell I could ever sound like Rab C Nesbitt. I wouldn't be able to talk like that if I tried. It's more like Sean Connery but without the weird "shh" sounds that he makes when he says the letter "s" in words.

some italian girls act greek sometimes

'Hello, my name is
Apu Dave, how may I help you.'
And then, you can't even understand their 'English.' Oh brother.

Agreed. For some reason the American male accent I can handle (no homo), but as soon as an American female opens her mouth I want to start howling like a dog in pain and run away. Indescribably fucking annoying.

I can fake a Frenchman speaking English very well..
