Roy was great.  A real inspiration to me when I was young.  Which by the way, was a long, long time ago.  In a galaxy far, far, away.  ;D
Marvin Eder was another great inspiration for me and still is.   Man, I am old. ;D

REEVES. You most definitely have lived through and witnessed the very best years of the bodybuilding 'game'!

I'm gonna find and post some internet photos of some of the early day plastic trophy contenders.

I'll bet you'll be able to ID most of them and ....  it will show these 'young-uns' what the top competitors looked like back then.

Corvello had a classic build...just sold a mag on E-Bay where he is on the cover.

Didn`t Doug Stroll make a few flicks?

Of course Hilligen was awesome even as he got older......made a comeback in the 1970`s or early 80`s and looked rippped to the bone.

I`m friggin` ancient and I never heard of ERNIE ERNST or MEL KNOLL.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing some real greats.  If you've not read the following two books, I highly recommend them.

Thanks, REEVES!

WES, You didn't hear about BERNIE Ernst and most of the others I'll be posting because bodybuilding and those involved were relatively unknown back in the 40's/50's/60's. See Ernst photo below.

Mel Knoll was a great bodybuilder in SF who never got the coverage he deserved but he did some modeling work during his high school years, but I don't think those shots were ever published.

Here are photos of the others I mentioned above.

You gotta realize that these guys were among the best of the old time bodybuilders competing back then. And today about 90% of them could be beaten by a good number of GetBiggers who actually lift the weights.

Has training protocol really improved that much?!

Back in the day, any form of heavy objects was fair game.

Including cows! (But I've told that story before.)

I believe that big dumbell belonged to Ed Yarkick over in his Oakland gym. Anyone have more info on where it might be today?

Thanks to OLDTIMESTRONGMAN.com for these photos

Cool stuff and great memories, stuntmovie.

Have you ever seen the film, "Athena".  A lighthearted take on the fitness craze of the fifties with Louis Calhern doing a Bernard "Bodylove" McFadden take and Steve Reeves and Dick Dubois (billed as "Richard Sabre") with actual speaking roles. Reeves went on to film greatness and Dubois became a minister later in his life.

I'm not certain but I believe the gentlemen with whom Reeves had the showdown at the end of the film's Mr. Universe contest via the Continental Press, was himself a stuntman.

Don Peters .... mid 60's. More than likely one of the best built during those early years.

Clint Beyererle .., trained at Pearl's in Pasadena and was ultra ripped.

Among the best back then

Great, albeit not "natural" physiques, sir!    ;D  I believe Clint is now married to Mike Mentzer's former girlfriend, Cathy.  Wasn't Peters a film editor at one time?  I think that is mentioned in the book West Coast Bodybuilding Scene...

REEVES, Thanks. It's kind of fun recalling all this stuff.

Yep, I  did see ATHENA when it first came out and years later Steve gave me an autographed copy in the tape format, but it's in some attic packed away now.

I forget who Reeves competed against in that movie but I'll check it out and see if I can find out if he was also in the stunt biz.

In real life ... one of Reeves' major contests was a 'battle' against Eric Pederson whom I have been told became a bad debt collector in Las Vegas in the 60's.

Funk, Yea "Mel Knoil" was only a fellow gym member (American Health Studios) but with a phenominal build. I had to mention him because he definitely was one of the best back then.

Yea, REEVES ... Definitely not natural back then. Those were the BIG DAYS of Decca?, prima?, and anavar?, dianabol?  if  my memory is still working properly. But I don't recall any use of injections in them good old days. (Need help on these doids.)

"KATHY" ... I remember Kathy! But I had no idea she married Clint. Small world!

Isn't Clint an airline pilot? And ... who was Clint's training partner when he trained at Pearl's?

I do know that Peters worked at one of the studios but not sure exactly what he did. You cold be correct about his editing job.

West Coast Bodybuilding Scene... I gotta check it out!

Here's Jerry Daniels (60's) and Jack Dillinger (50's).

I met them both on more than a couple of occasions.

I think Jerry beat Bob Gadja the year he won the Mr A.

And i had some gym equipment business dealings with Jack when he was running (owing?) a company that was involved in newly designed gym gear over in the Oakland vicinity. At that time he had his broken leg in a cast. He said that he "fell off a barstool!".

John Corvello - mid 60's (Shortly after winning the AAU Mrr. Cal?)

Ellington Darden - If I recall correctly he sometimes trained in a tub of mud ... some kind of new resistance technique, I guess.

By now you should be seeing the big diffenece between these old timeers and today's competitive bodybuilders.

Even today's true natural competitors could beat these old timers.

What happened?

i remember seeing don peters on the people's court, one of his gym members was sueing don for his membership money back don threw him out for piling weight on machines then going over and screaming a lot but not actually accomplishing anything but polluting the air with his screams and grunts.

Dave Johns .... 70's. He received his overall trophy from the hands of Mae West who was escorted on stage by Bert Goodrich who said. "Pardon us, but can we pass by you." .... and a very old lady became Mae West.

Dave Rogers... Trained at Doc Neely's (70's)
Title: Re: WHO WAZ?
Post by: stuntmovie on June 10, 2011, 12:32:32 PM
If I recall correctly, Dave was always considered one of the main contenders to beat when he entered the nationals, but his legs held him back and the judges appeared to be awarding titles to competitors with more MASS

This seemed to be around the time when small waist size became relatively unimportant and the classic look slowly faded away.

But Dave was the overall winner in the AAU 1977 Junior Mr USA and the overall winner of the AAU Mr  USA in 1980.

I saw Dave Johns win the 1976 (?) Mr. Western America at some high school in San Diego.  At least I think that is the title and oddly enough Musclememory doesn't have it listed in his catalog of wins.  I thought he was great but there were more than a few in the audience that thought even more of Szkalak.

Don Howorth is another great physique as is actor Bill Smith. Pederson was fantastic and if you've ever had the chance to visit Leo Stern's gym (I used to train there in the 70s) it was filled with excellent photographs of all time greats. Plus, there were caricatures of notable gym members up on the wall.  Great memories of a great gym.  Leo was the man as is Bill Pearl.
Title: Re: WHO WAZ?
Post by: stuntmovie on June 10, 2011, 01:03:03 PM
REEVES! At one time or another I met them all except for Pedersen and I visited Stern's Gym a couple of times while I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and have known Bill since way back then. But I don't recall ever having met Leo. I think he hung out with an older crowd.

In the mid 60's Howorth had a huge set of shoulders and always wore cardigan sweaters when he dressed up. Those were the good old days when Gene Mozee would always show up with the greatest looking lady in Hollywood and the proceed to MC the contests.

I still communicate with Gene frequently but have not made contact these past few months so I'll give him a call for a SoCal update and post it on this board.

Let me know if you have ay questions about the old timers because Gene is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the early days of BB.

I knew Dave Johns pretty well too and gotta say the he was one hell of a great guy.

Another guy I used to see as a kid at Ed Jubinvilles contests at Mt. Park Amusement Center in Holyoke Mass. was the great Leon Brown...........years later it was an honor to meet and compete in the same contest with him

The back shots of Leon were used in the book Pumping Iron which I am in too in an audience scene as a young skinny ass kid..........now I`m an old skinny ass kid  ;D

This pic was taken at The East Coast in Holyoke.........that day Leon took the title and every single best bodypart award as well as Most Muscular.

A then relatively unknown Louie Ferrigno backed out of the show after hearing Leon was in it.

That was the first time I saw Lou and he was humongous but at 175 Leon would have killed him.

REEVES. To the best of my knowledge, "YES!". but I have not seen Bob and his family for a long time. The last time we all gathered for dinner after a contest that was held in Anaheim. Ca. There was a restaurant a few miles south of Disneyland that served huge portions so it did a lot of bodybuilder business.

I think it was Bob who ordered the Turkey Platter which consisted of half a turkey and all the trimmings. This place was always full of laughing patrons because the portions were always rediculously huge.

Any one able to recall the name of that place?

WES...I attended a contest (IFBB Mr. International) with Bob and fellow gym members in Tiajuana which Bob easily won. Bob was the most solid and dense competitor of his era most definitely.

That was the same event where Sergio stood up and challenged Arnold to a posedown... but I've told that story earlier.

The final results were announced before evening time so everyone visited the pharmacies and within 2 hours, the pharmacies were out of inventory.

I never did meet Dave, WES, but I think I might have seem him compete at one time or another

Here's a photo I found on the net

True.

Yup.  Recall hearing about him or another of the Gold's regulars having a shit fit when someone put up a photo of them from a film or photo shoot.

Stuntmovie, I am trying to think of the restaurant but keep coming up with a personal fave of mine.  Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles.  Between that and the chicken restaurant at Knott's, I managed to become quite the roly poly.    Good news to hear about Bob, as I have know more than a few people that became Christians and stuck to their new values and live better lives because of their faith being genuine.

Speaking of cool places to eat, I recently had lunch and breakfast at Mel's drive-in on Sunset.  Great food, personal service and wonderful atmosphere.  Had the steak and eggs special both times.
