I met Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner. But he's a wrestler, and wrestlers are about 100x cooler than bodybuilders.

I'd see Dexter Jackon quite a few times at Winn-Dixie when I was stationed in Jacksonville...he looked massive...and always angry.  I saw Chris Cormier at a mall in O'ahu with a badass broad at his side.  It looked like his neck and lats were one bodypart.  It just isn't the same looking at pictures and seeing them in real life.  The differences are enormous.  Dex looked huge, but he was the smallest guy on stage for the most part, and Cormier, while not the smallest guy on stage, had great aesthetics.

Then I saw Ronnie.  The guy is a mutant and on an entire level above Dex and CC, great as they are.  Un-fucking-real.

No, that would be a "ho". ;)

As for bodybuilding, I've met Arnold, Franco, Waller, the Mentzers, Viator, Zane, Draper and more than I can recall right now.  Mostly from the 1960s and 1970s eras.  The new crap, errrr....crop I could care less about meeting.  There may be some good folks in there but to have a meeting of the minds, both participants must first have a mind.

Examples?  Here are three (3).   ;D

Coleman - Semi-mindless ( He is mildly retarded)

Cutler - Quasi-mindless (Has rare moments when he appears semi-articulate)

Greene - Not just mindless, but plain old fashioned fucking stupid and disgusting. He should be thankful that cardio pulmonary functions are involuntary, otherwise he would drop dead from the lack of brainpower necessary to keep his heart beating and his lungs breathing.  If there ever were a male version of the now classic "female" bodybuilder, i.e., a MANgoloid®, Kai "The Faggito Bandito" Greene is it.

Look kid.  I think you're a nice enough young man, but to be honest I am not a "virgin".  Now then, if you would care to know what it is like to be a relatively well educated mature man I would be happy to explain it to you - It is fine.

Otherwise, with a screen name like yours, (i.e., it appears someone sneezed when they named that particular individual) I would be very careful whom I attempted to belittle. You've got your whole life ahead of you and I wish you all the best.

Don't fuck up. ;D Later days, kid.  ;)

To denote, without stating so, what is termed a "pull quote", albeit a minor one.  Usually when I do this I will delete the majority of the quote and indicate it via "..." and of course actually quote it so that the person's screen name also appears.

And I do mean what I said in that I wish you all the best.  It is getting near this old man's bed time.  My mother used to tell me it shouldn't be called the "golden years" but instead the rusted ones.   ;D

Met Shawn Ray and Ronnie. Shawn was kind of a prick, though he carried himself like a professional. Ronnie was---...---Pretty much not a human being. When he signed his picture, I was all nervous (this was 2003 mind you) and I thought his arm might eat me. It was beyond enormous...It was not even human.

Also met Chris Cormier near the expo in 2001, shook his hand, it was huge and squishy. I asked him if he was gonna beat ronnie, he was like "uh hehe yeah!". He didn't seem all there.

I'm friends/acquaintance with a few, there's like 8 or 9 pro's living in Toronto

have met about 15-20 (I've been to 2 pro shows when I was younger and into bodybuilding)

3 of the pro's I know here get they're gear from the same guy I do

I used to run into Greg Kovacs on a monthly basis at a 24 hour grocery store, and I run into Paul Dillett about once a month at Wal Mart or Costco

Met Dorian in Calgary about a week after his third Sandow.  He was very cool in spite of circumstances...

The promoter put on quite a show.  The lead up to Dorian was a whole array of freakshow.  Power lifter carrying 1000lbs across the stage etc.  The WORST was a 'fitness' routine by a supposed competitor.  She was a disaster.  I felt embarassed for her.  There was a local BBer that did his routine.  I think he was deaf or had some other type of handicap.  Looked like he was about 30 weeks out from a show - CLEARLY off season.  They did a bunch of door prizes.  The guys directly in front and behind me won some pretty cool swag.

Dorian did his Olympia routine minus spray tan and then a 45 minute Q&A.  Class act all the way.

met almost every pro worth mentioning. Chris cormier was by far the coolest, doesn't act like he is better then you, Chris cook, Markus , kamali, Freeman, Heath, Coleman, Levrone, Cutler, Gunter, Thorvildson, McMillan, Jackson, bot of them, Branch Dennis Wolf, Melvin, and James all cool shit
among the nicest.

Darrem and Ernie Taylor both came across somewhat agitated, not pricks, but kind of in the middle. Frank Roberson was cool but a little to gayish, touchy and even makes gay jokes. Dorian is always to serious and tries to stay away from any type of long conversation, but understandable, very humble though, Shawn Ray is a prick but very generous, one handycap kid asked him to donate some money to his cause (forget what it was), anyway Shawn pulled out 300 dollars and gave it to him no strings attached, Gaspari and Labrada are cool to, very professional,

The most impressive in person Kovacks by a mile, second would have to be Ronnie, Impressive in contest shape for me was Pavol Jablonicky, very thin tissue skin almost transparent, pictures don't do him justice.

Craig Titus no class at all...At the 2001 Toronto Pro, Kamali and Craig weren't competing but up on stage together and Kamali announced that the feud was just for show and that they are really friends, later at Titus's booth I over heard some kid ask Titus about Kamali and he said " I can't stand the goof"

Met (as in spoke to) quite a few:

Dorian Yates: Know him by default as a result of training at Temple Gym for so many years. Laid back, dry sense of hunour, cool guy.

Shawn Ray - Thought he was friendly when I met him - not sure people say he's arrogant. Got a picture taken with him even though he had to rush off to be at his sponsor's booth.

Mariusz Pudzianowski - Bit of a prick, very moody, and had absolutely no interest in being spoke to by fans. Maybe because he didn't speak English very well but even so.

Flex Wheeler - bit arrogant, was wearing sunglasses indoors which kind of says it all really.

Ernie Taylor - again, used to see him round Temple Gym every now and again when I was younger - was always cool with me and never saw him moody with anyone.

Erk Fankhouser - decent guy, bought a t-shirt off him, very laid back and down to earth. Calves were just ridiculously amazing.

Seen loads of others but haven't spoken to like Ronnie, Dennis James, Victor Martinez, Chick, etc, all the usual Expo people.

Off the top of my head though, I've met : Ronnie, Dexter, Gunter, Markus, Dennis, Jay, Craiggers, Melvin, Lee P., Shawn R., Victor, etc., etc., etc. ! Lol !

They were ALL impressive ! One of the coolest, biggest pro's that stood out was Chris Cook just after he turned pro. Met him when he was in off-season mode and HOLY SHIT !! LOL !! I just remember thinkin' to myself, " What am I lookin' at ???? How can a person get that big ! " He, quite literally, guys, looked like a livestock animal that quit walkin' on all fours and was able to actual stand and walk on it's two back legs ! No joke ! Very impressive ! And, on top of that, nicest person I've ever met. Fact !

Hell, loads of them. Attended the British and a few European Grand Prixs from the late 90's into the early 2000's. Saw pretty much anyone worth seeing.

Dorian was by far the coolest and most easy going. He even recognised me a few times as I attended the shows so often. Flex was pretty cool too but a bit aloof and for some reason posing for men in thongs has gone to his head. Ronnie, Cormier, Nasser, etc etc etc. If they competed in the mid to late 90's, I saw them.

No, I get the impression Dorian isn't really too hot on computers and the internet - he doesn't really relate to it that well so I've never mentioned Getbig. Someone found an old video of him on the internet posing at the 1986 British Nationals where he was beaten by Chris Oskys for the overall and we were all crowding round watching it. I asked Dorian what happened to that guy and he gave a little smile and said "I think he went on to run a chip shop."  ;D

I'm not actually training in Temple Gym anymore -I left in February - I still see some of the guys from there every now and again and next time I see Dorian I'll ask him who's better - him or Ronnie.

Cool. The reason I asked is partly because he's got his own site and even a forum now, I think. So he's definitely spending time online, which nearly everyone does. Pretty sure he must've heard about Getbig, although I don't think he'll post here, given the atmosphere :-\

Let's put it this way. I bought a lot of shit, shirts too. The Max Muscle in my town sucks by comparison... as a matter of fact, it closed.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I've met Mike Matarrazzo many, many times. I suppose enough to call us friends. He is always so down to earth, especially now that he isn't competing. He was cool even when dieting hard.

I'll have to post those pics up when I get back home.

Yeah, I dig San Jose, if I could afford to live there I would. Considering I can be to Milipitas blvd. in 50 minutes, I'm not too far away.

I go to the Arnold every year so I have got to meet a lot of top pro bodybuilders and bullshit with them. I have met a few a couple different times and the one time they were in a good mood and talkative and the other time complete dicks!!! One that stands out as being a super cool guy the first time was Don Long cool as shit he just turned pro and seemed to wanna meet everyone. The next year went up to talk to him he was in the Vivarin booth at the Arnold and he completely blew us off.

Then there was the time I met Kovac in Chicago at the Olympia and he was cool as hell then the a few months later at the ARnold I asked how big his arms were and he said something crazy like almost 28" and I said DAmn almost as big as Hoerbels and he FREAKED the fuck out started snarling and growling I looked at my dad and said fuck I thin I pissed him off he just glared at me!!! Hahahah!!!

But for the most part all of them have been cool and talkative. Ronnie was pissed one year(the year he won his first Olympia) He was sitting across from Billy Blanks tae Bo booth and no one I mean NO ONE was in line to talk to him everyone was watching Billy Blanks and Tae Bo. I walked up and said Hey he looked at me kinda smiled and I asked him jokingly if he ever tried Tae Bo he got a good laugh out of it :)

Shawn Ray at Bull Dog Gym in his Amateur days when I had family in Fullerton yrs ago, drove an old red 300 series Bimmer back than.  There are an older gentlemen who trained with Shawn, kind of like Brian/Ronnie thing in Arlington.  I had the normal kid impression of him, given I was collecting all of his covers at the time.

Where the hell is Azusa's fine ass?  Girl is from Glendora but don't want to own up.

I think Phil Heath was in the posing room at a gym on Iliff in Aurora, CO when he was an amateur, but he has yet to confirm.  Anyway, guy did look like him.

I met Ronnie Coleman by complete chance in florida around '2000.  I went to my local supplement store to get some protien powder. The parking lot was filled with cop cars, and firetrucks, I was like wtf is going on?  I walk in and I see a gorilla with a shirt on.  The veins on his biceps were as thick as my fingers  :o  he was there to promote the store, as well as make some money off dvd's and autographs.  I ended up getting a signed photo.  The crazy thing was that I had no idea he was going to be there!

I met Matt Duvall in an airport.

He was always scowling in those Muscletech ads, and I envisioned him to be an angry guy.

Instead, he was very nice and willing to talk.

Afterward, I realized he was just coming from a show that he didn't do very well at. All the more reason I was impressed that he was nice.

I guess he's out of the sport now.

I met Dexter Jackson and Ronnie.

Dexter is a total prick.   He is tiny in real life and a punk.

Ronnie is cool as hell and freaking massive.   Until you are next to ronnie is hard to appreciate how big he is.

Around the time of the 1998 Mr. O, I was at a movie theater in Baltimore's inner harbor...in the theater was who I thought was Shawn Ray...after the movie finished he left...I saw him on Baltimore's Block, going into one of the pornshops, and then into a strip club...my friends and I were yelling " What's up Shawn Ray!"

It wasn't him...in was in Las Vegas that weekend...

I have met former National and local competitor Andrew Sarmast on numerous occasions since the mid-90s...he is a former workout partner of Kevin Levrone...and dude is huge...good guy as well.

Dorian is a cool dawg irl, would let anyone train with him regardless of size of they worked hard. Was mostly training with very normal type looking dudes, not doing gear etc. Trained with him too back in 04 or so. Not much of a speaker, but we allready knew that... Craig was a speaker though... and a was big on narcs... Cormier was cool too and not as big on narcs as his rep. Met and hang out with these guys in Amsterdam. Craig was Mcing Dorians contest at the time and would afterwards do alot of dope. Then he wrote a statement about him and the shecraigger NOT DOING ANY DRUGS AT ALL WHILE BEING IN A-DAM AND OFFCOURSE NOT VISITING ANY COFFEESHOPS. Maybe he already brought his own but he was pretty high and actually very funny. The opposite pro of Craig would be Ed Van Amsterdam, who would verbally assault me for being clean (at the time, just for a few months), he would tell everybody jokes about mushroom trips and how much he would smoke. First thing he asked was somehting like "man I need more GH, got any good sources?". Indeed a funny, kinda childish dude. Met alot more of them...but those 4 stand out. All of them except of Dorian because of persona.

You dont realize how big pro's are until you see them in person. Ive been lucky to train around some pros (Jim Momany, Francois, Hendershot) and to see a shit load guest pose. The biggest guys ive ever seen were Fux, Coleman, and Dillett. Paul Dellett didnt look real. In clothes he wasnt that impressive, but when he posed, it made you wonder how this guy ever got beat.  Saw Dexter and Joe McNeal at Outback about 8 weeks berfore the 2009 Olympia and he was BIG! Real nice too.

Some of my impressions after briefly meeting some pros;

King Kamali-Really good guy and really down to earth.

Shawn Ray-Bothered him for a pic while he was eating and it wasn`t a problem. Later as he was the guest poser,he was backstage with us and shot the shit just like a regular guy.......no airs about him.

Jeff Poulin-As I said,extremely nice guy.

Kovacs-FUCKING HUGE!!!  really cool the time I met him in Florida.

Tom Prince-CARTOONISH!!

Bob Chick-Always cool.

George Farrah-Actually came backstage to wish me a happy birthday and didn`t know me from adam.

I thought that was pretty damn awesome at the time.

Mike Katz-Couldn`t meet a nicer guy.

Arnold-Full of charisma and joking around.(circa 1975)

Franco-Cool as hell, but hard to understand with his thick Italian accent (circa 1976-77)

Bill Grant-One of the great with a great personality and an extremely nice person.
A true legend who always conducts himself properly.

Cutler-Never even heard him utter more than two words and I`ve seen him a zillion times.

Lou Ferrigno-Nothing good to say,so I won`t say shit!!

Ronnie-Cool!

Cormeir-Also pretty cool.

Levrone-Ahhhgg !!

Dave Marinelli-Trained a couple of bodyparts with him when I lived in Florida.......great guy.

Jeremy Freeman-Also a good dude.

Vince Taylor-Awesome person.

Getting tired of thinking back..........my brain is overtrained or underdeveloped.........n ot sure which anymore.  :)

Dave Mastorakis-A close personal friend and a great guy ...........another legend.

I saw Cormier at the 2001 expo as well...big guy with braids at the time....he was hanging out with Gunther who had on a suit which was obviously tailor made for him...it was such a huge suit..

Met Jay Cutler at a GNC right after he beat Ronnie for the first time...he was there with his wife..HUGE MOFO.....and wide as a truck....couldn't believe that a human could get that big,,he signed my copy of Muscular Development with him on the cover....his wife is really cute but small..I was wondering how she could could take all of Jay inside her...LOL

I`ve met a lot more than that doing all the contests I`ve been in and attended.

I saw Kevin at one contest and only one time.........my impression was that he thought he was really above everybody and everything.

Of course I really don`t know him so I could be dead wrong but he seemed like an idiot! :)

Branch Warren....talked to him quite awhile...down to earth and easy to talk to.

Shawn Ray......all about business but polite.

Flex Wheeler.....Gave an awesome guest posing but didn;t seem to eager to talk to any fans.

Lou Ferrigno.....Very full of himself.

Chris Dickerson---Great guy and very eager to share his knowledge.

Frank Zane......amazing seminar and easy to talk to..

WES, ROB, Good call! I met, worked with and celebrated births and deaths and graduations of all you mentioned above x-cept for Marinelli and your friend in Fl and I gotta agree with ya 100%.

You are a fine judge of character. (X-cept for one or two.)

King Kamali- Great person.

Shawn Ray - I first met Shawn when he was still a teen. I think it was at Weider's office when Everson was working for Joe and we stopped in to say "Howdy" before heading back home after some contest that was promoted in one of the Disneyland Hotels. A great bodybuilder and person in his own right.

Jeff Poulin- Too long back to recall, but I do remember him as a great person.

Kovacs-FUCKING HUGE!!!  Yea, I totally agree and he was in the 'gaining wt process' and breathing hard climbing the steps to the stage. Quiet, quiet,  and unassuming.

Tom Prince - Super great person.

Bob Chick - The Best of the bunch. Always pisses me off when I hear bad shit from fantasy fans.

George Farrah - Always willing to stop and talk with his fans.

Mike Katz - Met a younger Mike and was impressed by his courtesy.

Arnold- Knew Arnold when he first arrived in the USA. Good guy always. Likes attention.

Franco- Speaks good English now.

Bill Grant- One of my very good friends when he was still competing, but have3 not see Bill since he moved back east. (Bill - Contact me!)

Cutler-Never even heard him utter more than two words and I`ve seen him a zillion times. (Ditto)

Lou Ferrigno-Nothing good to say,so I won`t say shit!! Damn accurate.

Ronnie- Good guy and damn impressive even between contests.

Cormeir- Saw him often but never had the opportunity to talk with him other than a swift "Howdy!".

Levrone - Good guy.

Jeremy Freeman-Also a good dude. Agreed!

Vince Taylor-Awesome person. Agreed.

Looking back over the years, two of the pros stick out in my mind as being downright humble and attentive to their fans ... That's Strydom and Cottrell.

Thanks for the contribution Stunt.......never met either Strydom or Porter.

I will add that Boyer Coe is so calm and cool........really a good guy and laidback bigtime.

One of the first pros I ever saw in person ..........still inspires me to think about it.

He had on a Golds Gym warmup suit and looked really tiny............when it came off,he looked like a peice of sculpture that came to life.

Awesome posing routine..............Mr. Bay State,Mechanics Hall,Worcester Mass., circa 1976-78

I remember I saw Curtis about a week or two before he died in Gold's Venice.  I called Phil and told him that Curtis looked purple and out of breath, but huge.  Sad, at least Phil is worried about his health now.  I trained with him in Cleveland, OH.

and funny how NONE of them will come and say even one single thing abotu what is the true way to become large ,, and they all know it ,,they all been doing it ,,they all running after gh like it was the holy grail which it is ,,they all injected aas every day into their buttocks multiple times and full syrnges of 3 cc few times a day ,, yet none will come and say even one word so the  fellas who want to be like them will have a better understanding and can continue the cult,,

thats because bodybuildrs do not care,,they only care about THEMSELVES,, they dont give a flying fuck if you will be thick and large and lean or not,,they want to be SEPCIAL AND WANT YOU TO STAY UN-SPECIAL so they can have their livlihood which is cheecheeing $$ on the table even month to pay their hormones ,,narcotics in many times,, and rent : )

and thats the truth!

so meeting us mean nothing ,,you meet a carpenter he can help you becomign one,, you meet a hair teacher ...he can make you becoming one ,,you meet a baker ...he can help you becoming one,,you meet a bodyuilder? he wotn help you with shit!

and this is the truth ,,the only truth ,,and nothing! but the truth

thts why i get death trets ,,thats why people say oh he is profesional it is beautiful man with glases,,it has to he know hormones so well,,he is in the insides,,how can we have such a traitor,,he make those kids knwo the truth WE ARE LOKING DAMN MONEY!!  how can it be!!

it can be ! ,because the louzy bastards didnt care ,,they let fellas burn themselves  and go through same experience they did inorder to get up the ranks,, its selfish and its not the nature of TRUE CHAMPIONS!

and yes it include sean chiwawa ray

Oh and Nasser how many up and coming bodybuilders did you help out? Did you see a guy who was a threat and go out of your way to make him better?? Bodybuilding is a sport, and as such you do not help the other team. You know this, not sure why you are bitching about the industry so damn much...

WES, Thanks! That's a dam impressive contest history and a great shot. You must be high man on the totem when it comes to entering that many contests. Do you have an update on that?

AND have you ever computed the amount of money you have spent on NPC Entry Fees over all those years? And are you still in possession of all those trophies?

In an earlier post, you mentioned Scott Cooper and Gene Massey.

I do recall both their names but I had to google their photos to see if I could recall who they were ....
And Scott Cooper is definitely the contenda whom I often mistake for Hayslip.

I think that this case of mistaken identity is due to the fact that Cooper and Hayslip had almost identical  shots taken while doing pull-ups around the same time frame.

Photos attached .... first two are Cooper and the third is Massey. I do't believe I ever met either of them, but I probably do know the majority of the promoters in whose contests you participated.

Once again, these were the types of physiques who set the world of bodybuilding on its proper path back then with somewhat of a divergence to shortly follow.

One more question .... There was a young bodybuilder with tons of potential coming up in Florida who suddenly passed away in his early 20's less than ten years ago. Do you recall his name and the cause of death?

I met Dexter Jackson and Ronnie.

Dexter is a total prick.   He is tiny in real life and a punk.

Ronnie is cool as hell and freaking massive.   Until you are next to ronnie is hard to appreciate how big he is.

You hate black people!

Why did you meet them?

Thanks Stunt.........I have about 65 trophies, most of which are in my barn except for a few I keep in the house as they have a special meaning to me.

As far as being high man on the totem pole goes, not in this lifetime!!  ;D

I am listed as one of the contestants with the most entries on www.musclememory.com and they only list the bigger more important contests people have competed in.

Thanks, WES. Appears to be all east coast contenders.

In your opinion who promotes or promoted the best contests back there?

I assume you know Peter Potter and Doc Neely, but how about Chip English way down south near Foley, Alabama?
Title: Re: have you ever met a pro? if so then who

I know Peter, never met Doc Neely oir Chip but have heard of Doc of course.

The New Englands are run extremely well,as well as Jim Rockels Rochester contest, and the Masters Nats and Southern States..............four of the best run contests I`ve ever been in in my opinion.

The NABBA Nats are run well also............always a good contest.

I`ve competed in a lot of places/cities and states but never went too far west.............meaning Buffalo NY,Harrisburgh, and Pittsburgh Pa.

That`s west for me anyway.  :)

Goinig to do the North Americas Masters in Cleveland later this year so I`m heading west bit by bit.  ;D
