TV pitchman accused of bilking 220,000 out of $52M
PHOENIX – A grand jury has indicted a Phoenix-based TV pitchman accused of running a nationwide scheme to sell essentially worthless Internet-based businesses to more than 200,000 people.
Federal prosecutors say Donald Lapre is charged with 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and promotional money laundering. He's accused of overseeing and promoting the opportunity through his company called "The Greatest Vitamin in the World."
During the course of the scheme, the government says at least 220,000 victims were defrauded of nearly $52 million.
Lapre was often seen on television giving his hard-luck life story and how he was able to turn his life around. He refers to himself on his website as "The King of Infomercials."
Lapre has not responded to an email seeking comment.

When I was a kid I remember watching Don's infomercials. They would be on some time after THE DRAMBUIE SHOWCASE REVIEW or COPS was over. I was intrigued by his energy and charisma but whatever program he was selling didn't make much sense to me:
He's still kicking around by the way [he claims in this video he has done a half a billion in sales in his lifetime]:
Also, Don's partner in the vitamin sales Doug Grant was convicted of manslaughter in 2009:

If Don had so much money, why do his YouTube videos have so few views and why does his website look like this?:

It all seems rather odd to me.

I had no idea this was the case until the past couple of years. Now more and more things like this come up which make me ask the question, which company is not bent?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2004255/TV-pitchman-Don-Lapre-faces-25-years-1-bed-prison-cell-52m-fraud.html
"Meanwhile, Lapre was personally paid more than $2.2 million from the business between 2004 and 2007, according to the indictment."
So what happened to the rest of the money? Also, as Vince mentioned, why now?
