Title: Getbig's thoughts on Mark Rippetoe?
Post by: Swedish Viking on June 26, 2011, 01:06:03 PM
I'm surprised there are so few SS threads here.  Anyone have any beef with Rippetoe?

I think he has some great stuff when it comes to begginner training. A Rippetoe 5x5 or a stronglifts 5x5 is the best thing a beginner can do.

Only read him on T-nation, but not that often. Mostly agree with his concepts, the ones I'm familiar with; one being his  seven exercise idea. Which is returning back to the basics and all that. That's when the body grows.

Though disagree with the 5X5's for any beginner, as Yev33 said.. Either BB'ing or strength goals. Have to give someone who never had lifted before a more rounded program, something like getting use to weight work and conditioning the mind as well as the body, to any more serious future workouts. And a rep range between 10-12 or more. Probably a 4 to 6 week program of breaking in stuff like that. Than a 5X5 style program or the seven exercise thing, which both can be excellent . Good luck.

He's fine if you're a begineer. It's standard stuff that branches off of Bill Starr's stuff, which is excellent.

Don't not follow his diet advice. Gomad will most likely turn you into a fatty, unless you're severly under nourished.

Also, don't blindly any coach like he's a God. Take what is useful, but always rmember that there comes a point where you'll have to change programs. Rippetoe's fans are mostly begineers that don't relised this till much later on.
