I wouldn't mess with the tempo on deadlifts, I think doing that invites more injury rather than avoid it. If deadlifts are giving you trouble, stay away from them for a while and see how it goes.

Change over to rack pulls or cleans for a couple weeks, then deadlifts for a couple weeks, see if you notice a difference.

How long you been lifting? Any injuries?

GyroFlex didn't say how many reps, sets or times a week he does DL's . And if he means he's 68 years old than it may be time for a readjustment in his training style. With tempo, would that be something like a basic 1.2.3. & sometimes 4 or  4.0.3., etc.. Tempo was very popular at one time, but as trhngs seem to go in trends in BB'ing, not so much now.

In any case, perhaps a reduction in the amount of sets he does in a workout and only doing DL's once a week . Because at 68 years, the recovery from every workout can require a longer break between workouts. More so when doing serious compound exercises like DL's. Most can expect a wearing down as age advances. Some times once a week Dl's, squats, etc can do more for a person that 2 or 3 times a week. Even for the much younger lifter.

If wanting to drop DL's for awhile, than a suggestion of Romanian Deadlifts might help. Hi-pulls & cleans, which are quick lifts, have been known to cause undo stress on the connective tissue of older people. As well as the joints. But that would be GF's own choice. Good Luck.

I deadlift once a week. no matter how many reps I'm doing, I do singles meaning I reset after each rep. only takes me a couple seconds to reset. So I might do 10 sets of 1 rep  or 8 sets of 1 or 5 sets of 1 ect ect.
