Title: Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 20 Years Old
Post by: bradistani on July 05, 2011, 08:05:23 AM
well a couple of days back actually. but, blimey! where does all the time go, eh ?? i remember it like it was yesterday  :'(

oh, btw, t1 > t3 > t2  :)

He came back. On July 3, 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day arrived in theaters as naked as Arnold Schwarzenegger after time travel and came away with the then-biggest five-day opening in box office history. The James Cameron-directed film earned $54 million over its first five days of release, $3 million more than Tim Burton’s Batman grabbed in its first five days back in 1989. Said an anonymous theater owner to the New York Times at the time, “At virtually all our locations, we were selling out well in advance of showings, and the word-of-mouth buzz out there is just phenomenal.” Indeed it was: Terminator 2 went on to gross $204.8 million domestically, and over $500 million worldwide. All of which is to say: Happy anniversary to a cultural touchstone!

With its massive set pieces and groundbreaking special effects, Judgment Day looks more like the blockbusters of today than anything that was in theaters twenty years ago. (To wit, the next four films at the box office during the opening weekend of T2: Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, City Slickers, Problem Child 2.) Cameron spent anywhere from $85 to $102 on the Terminator sequel, which was another then-record — one Cameron and the franchise would top in later years with Titanic and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, respectively — and the cost was worth it: in addition to the tremendous box office, T2 won four Oscars, including one for Best Visual Effects.

I can remember seeing Terminator 2: Judgment Day in a packed Manhasset, NY theater during opening weekend — the same theater I had previously seen Naked Gun 2 1/2, for what it’s worth — and the film was an action revelation. Linda Hamilton’s guns! Edward Furlong! Arnold! Robert Patrick’s terrifying T-1000! “I need a vacation”! It was all there, and all great. T2 was like The Godfather Part II of summer entertainment; the sequel that improved on the excellent original in ways previously thought impossible.

In honor of T2 — and to celebrate Fourth of July — remember Judgment Day below. Hasta la vista, baby.

T2 was to T1 what Aliens was to Alien - Jim Cameron took a great movie and made an even better sequel for it.

Hopefully, he'll do the same with Avatar.

Brad, good to see you appreciating T3, which is a great action flick by itself and only gets a bad rap because it's a sequel to the more popular T2.

Yes I never understand the hate on T3.  It was a perfectly good movie.

It's like huge gaps between these. 3rd i can't remember anything about. except that John Connor was played by some b actor.

Edward Furlong? He wasn't as bad as Nick Stahl, the worst John Conner to date.

t3 had more of a feel of t1 but with better special effects and a super hot terminator. thats why i like it. t1 is a 80s masterpiece. t2 was great, with for its time, awesome special effects. it just had too many moments of utter shite for my liking. the ridiculous premise of a terminator learning or gaining some humanity  ::)  that squawking little bastard got on my nerves big time n'all

i remember seeing this at the local drive in (which is now a wal mart), seems like a long time ago but not quite 20 years

i saw T3 in theaters exactly 8 years ago today, i remember the exact date because i was so excited to see it and it was the day after the 4th of july

T3 was good, people hate it because it wasn't anywhere near as good as the first two

i like the original the best, in fact i think it is one of the best movies of all time

Fuck you T3 lovers. It was a SOLID 2 star movie, but not a 3 star like its predecessors. Arnolds acting seemed cheesy, and the women terminator was trying way to hard to act like a robot. Good plot and so so script, but nothing compared to the 1st and second.

wrong. T1 owns the shit out of all the other T movies. period end of story. no product placements or comedy lines. straight brutal science fiction.

Yeah, lots of people like the original Terminator more than the sequels, same as the crowd that likes Alien more than Aliens. Each to their own. I like T2 better than T1 better than T3. I also like T4.

I haven't seen the 3rd and the 4th one. I did see Freddy vs Jason and Jason X, which were OK for B-grade movies.

Have you seen the remake of the original that came out in 2009?

I have this sitting in my collection and i might stomp on it.  :D Well, you need to see #3 and #4 because you can see his face and how he got his mask.  :) Well, i am a dumbass and i pre-ordered it on Blu-Ray and paid $45 for it was god awful. I still watch it because i am a fan, but i feel that i was robbed.  ;) It's ok though, because i am a Horror fan and always will be.

I think T2 was awful, it was like a kid's movie compared to the other parts.

Especially the "You can't go around and kill people" made the "TERMINATOR" idea ridiculous.

T3 was good and i liked T4 because it made the time shift, it would have been ridiculous to have "Arnold" come back AGAIN to kill John Connor.

Terminator is Arnold - Hope this helps. The only part that was good on T4: Salvation was the part where the CGI Arnold came out and beat the fuck out of Christian Bale (John Connor).

T1 and T2 were great movies. Both original and ground breaking in their ways. T3 was fucking shit. That kid that played John Connor was a fucking insult and slap-in-the-face to movie-goers.

If thats what you think, its a good thing your not a director because you really have no clue what a good movie is. But yeah to each his own I guess..  ???

LOL, whatever a director has to do with these things, wouldn't that be the producer or script writer deciding the stuff?  ::) ::) ::)

Besides, "a good movie" and "a movie that lots of people watch" are two totally different things. Deciding on the "TERMINATOR" to stop killing people to get that PG-13 rating plus some new special effects make not a good movie.

T1 was as raw as you can get, T2 was very watered down but whos to say a PG13 movie cant be a 3 star?
Title: Re: Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 20 Years Old
Post by: DK II on July 06, 2011, 05:33:11 PM
I see it like this, T2 was mainly to commercialize the Terminator. Cameron had the money now, he's a sucker for special effects and big movies.

T3 tried to take the Terminator back to his roots, more violence, overall darker movie, it makes T2 look like a family movie or almost comedic. The Terminator learning not to kill people and how to make jokes, taught to him by a 11 year old kid, GREAT idea.

T2 was all about the special effects, the "story" sucked big time.

SPOILER WARNING

What i liked about T3 was the plot twist at the end that they couldn't stop judgement day but were "tricked" by the Terminator into saving themselves, thus making the transition to the time after Judgement Day.

Never said that T2 was better than the first, it was extremely well done but it aimed for a different audience than the 1st which was a real deal nitty gritty sci fi thriller. 3 and 4 were B grade flicks produced only to make lots of money for the franchise. I just dont know why people are saying T3 was even comparable to those, it was just horrible.

what was so bad about T3?

It was very expensive and action packed, but it just lacked that unique style of directing and feel the first 2 had. Not to mention alot of the acting was cheesy and the character who played John Conner was a b grade actor who just didnt fit the part. The director creates the atmosphere in a movie, and the guy who did T3 just didnt have "it". T3 was plain jane with nothing memorable that stood out. There were parts in T1 +2 where I got goosbumps from the feeling of being in the movie, T3 was just missing something. It was void. And the female terminators acting was too pretentious, she seemed like she tried too hard to act cyborg just cheesy acting.

Big bucks put into it though, I guess to some people thats what makes a great movie... Not my cup of tea. Again to each his own.

No, you're not.  I actually think Salvation gets a bum rap.  Sure, it's not "original" in as much as it's a sequel.  But then, who expects a sequel to have an original premise?  ::)

I thought it was a positive addition to the franchise.  T2 remains my favorite, but let's be real, here:  it wasn't without its faults, either (that punk-ass Eddie Furlong kid as John Connor?  At least the kid from Carnivale in T3 could act).  T3 was basically a T2 retake.  And amazing as the original is, it's corny as fuck, too :)

I know he catches shit for throat cancer Batman, but I think Bale's probably the greatest actor of the generation.  He was good as "future" John Connor and that death row guy gave a good performance, too.
