Stick to Far North Queensland if you only have 8 days and also want to dive.

You're going all the way to Oz for only 8 days? Dude - that's a long flight to miss a lot of the country.

far North Queensland will give you what you want in the time you have. Diving further south now is a bit cold.

Well, we can fudge the number of days, 8 would be a minimum.

Could I have some specifics and such from you fine, upstanding gentlemen? Local dishes, brews, hotels, would it be better to get a condo or whatnot? Specific sites to see etc? It's going to me wife and I plus another couple (good friends, not "wife swapping good friends") we are researching but that looking at some pictures and such on the web can only go so far.

Appreciate the help so far.

Don't bother so much with the west.  Good quality of life but there's very little payoff for a tourist given the travel time.

Bring your wallet.  My folks found Aus expensive back when it was US$0.80 to the Aus dollar.

Ime, a good meal is hard to find no matter how much you're paying for it, but again... I'm out west.

Food? Most Aussies eat Thai when they go out for dinner to be honest.

Beer? You have to get drunk on VB at least once. The hangovers are wicked though for some reason.

Place to stay? Get a condo ( holiday rental ) if you have 4 people because breakfast for 4 will run about $120 including coffee so make some eggs yourself. There are no free refills of anything btw.
