I'm talking about external influences like a video clip, or a song or women (or guys), or some motivational words of encouragement; not caffeine or other substances.
What gets you're head in the right space to be able to focus on the punishment you're about to put yourself through?

Beethoven, Wagner, Schumann, Dave Brubeck....Unfortunately the people who pick the music at my gym have crap for taste,...so I have to use a player with noise canceling earphones.
-
That's pretty cool. What are some of the best pieces to listen to?
-
Beethoven: any of the symphonies, but especially 3rd; 6th; 7th, fourth movement; 9th, second and last movement. Piano conerto #1, first, and third movement; piano concerto #5, first and third movement(however the second movement is an astounding slow or "ballad" movement, it could make you cry in front of everyone.)
Schumann 1st symphony, last movement
Wagner Die Meistersinger overture and prelude to the festival/dance of the Apprentices; Ride of the Valkyries(with the vocal parts);
The end of act 1 Die Walkure(some records call it "wintersturme"); overture to Tannhauser; overture to Reinzi
Dave Brubeck is a different kind of fire up, understated and probably more appropriate for cardio, but I have played him in the weight room too, try any of his jazz goes to college, especially "Bru's Blues".

Thanks Sync, will check some of these out!

As weird as this sounds on a bodybuilding board. But I love watching college and pro team training clips and watching the energy the coaches put into to the team to get them ready to train. Last year when I was at USC I took some video of the team right before they trained, the S&C coach chose a team leader to lead in a pre-training rant to get them fired up, it was pretty awesome. It got everyone in that gym ready to compete with one another and to get out to break PR's on a weekly basis.
-
Inner desire to have the best physique attainable. If I cleaned up my diet that would be possible. My training is spot on.
-
This is always a good one to get fired up to:

"Cheerleaders" are a turn off for me,...they simply make me angry and passive aggressive.

the thought of being on top of a woman and banging the hell out of her

I dont need to get fired up, I know that sreacmin, yelling and get furious wont make me any stronger or bigger...just make me even more sore the day after.
I was the strongest when I trained 3 times a week, and just made few set of basic exercises...
Is there really any purpose to get fired up...most people complain about the pros workout but, doing set after set to failure will give u 100% of sorenes in your muscles. U dont have to scream and yell! To me thats total wast of time and pretty childish!

Milfs, honestly

When training biceps, I think of Robby.....that fires me up to train.
On back day, I visualize Samir and Dorian and Ronnie, sometimes even Tony Pearson.
Chest day makes me think of Arnie, that gets me ready to pump chest up!
Calves, I think of Dickerson and Yates!!!
So really thinking of champs with great bodyparts.....makes me want to get in the gym and really get going towards reaching my goals.

I'm the exact same way, except I imagine chubby, oiled up, milfs. Not men in thongs. ;D

you are a hell of a man!!!!!

Personally, some pics of myself from when I was younger motivate the hell out of me. I want to look my best, not like a tub-of-lard rapidly approaching 40...
The ladies are a bonus, not motivation. If you change your life for pussy, you'll be right back where you started in no time.

Just started working out at my new gym and it is much more motivating because there are a lot more people and generally they are in much better shape than my old gym. Lots of big guys on testoserona and trenbolona but it don't matter that I'm natural because seeing quality physiques motivates me to push even harder. Also lots of attractive fit girls there too which is always nice.

anticipating the workout, making progress, thinking about future gains, maintaining gains, etc.
its not very conscious, i.e. i dont try to motivate myself, its just the way i feel when i go to the gym.
-
Fear of being super skinny again.
-
Knowing that the result will be a far superior physique than the majority of people my age.
-
This fires me up to train, fuck!

good music, and beautiful nature. also, memories of the experience of intense exercise and how it makes me feel alive, energized, confident, and capable.

The proper mindset: If I leave bodybuilding I get skinny and weak

I have a ritual
I take a pre work out, something that gives me a buzz
I then put on short video clips, usually something military or extreme , then something dirty then some thing extreme again.
The whole cocktail usually has me in the right place mentally to work out
In my home gym I have music like Asia or the Cult that keep me going.
I also keep records of what I have done and set my self targets for each work out
