Title: How many pairs of shoes should a man have?
Post by: BayGBM on July 27, 2011, 08:11:28 PM
How many pairs of shoes should a man have?

Gym shoes (running, tennis, b-ball, other sports)
Dress shoes (black)
Dress shoes (brown)
Beach shoes (sandals, flip flops)
Every day non-gym shoes

Does a dude need more than 5 pairs of shoes?

Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?  For years, I kept my old pair of Nike Meadow Supreme shoes long after they were usable because they were so comfortable I just could not throw them away.  I wore them when I washed the car or did other grunt work.  Best pair of shoes ever!  Eventually, years later, I tired to buy another pair but that model was discontinued.  :'(

I have like 3 pairs of running shoes. You need to buy new ones every couple of months if you want to take care of your joints. I have a pair of dressy shoes my girlfriend picked out  ::) a couple of white pairs negro shoes and a really nice pair of timberland hiking boots. Also sandals for the beach and running to the store.

I can`t even count how many I have.  My favorite are Alden and JM Weston, Berlutti, although on occasion I will wear Prada or Gucci (Tom Ford era or before of course as they are the only Gucci`s that are actually decently made).

I have:

A pair of casual sneakers.  Unfortunately I bought them online and they didn't look how I expected... quite gaudy.
Two pairs of gym shoes.  Flat soled skate shoes (I actually wear these mostly as casual shoes as well), and weightlifting shoes (my most expensive pair of shoes ever -- adidas newest model).
A pair of running shoes.  New Balance 994 or something like that.  One of the best pairs of shoes I ever bought.  5+ years later and they are still as solid as the day they came out of the packaging; well worth the $130.
A pair of dress shoes... I think.  Never once worn them.  (I'm a kid  ;D)
Two pairs of old shoes which I wear for general comfort / "work" such as general manual labor type tasks.  These were both at one time my primary use sneakers.
A pair of sandals.  Very nice rainbow brand sandals, comfortable and sturdy.

That's 8 pairs for me, though I don't wear the dress shoes or old shoes very often, so more like 5.

I have a crappy pair for mowing the lawn, a crappy-ok pair I can run in, an ok pair of asics for gym, an every day pair and one pair of dress shoes.

For some reason I'm really liking white Canvas lowtops--like the ones the old skool bbers used to wear...
but I have a ton of running shoes--mostly odd colorways and models
I have one or two that I regularly wear
about 3 pairs of brown dress shoes in various shades
3 black pairs of dress shoes
and a several pairs of boots

I worked for a guy who honestly had well over 200 pairs of "just" basketball shoes. His guest bedroom had probably 50 boxes of shoes that he hadn't even worn yet.

That's just overkill, lol. Did he actually buy them or just get them for free because he's an athlete or something?

If forgot to mention club/bar/dancing shoes.  I'm old so I don't cut the rug much anymore... I wear my "every day non-gym shoes" to bars, clubs, or sporting events.  I also forgot to add some kind of hiking/camping boots.  So that's about 6 pairs.

No he bought them at full price, he was obsessed with basketball shoes and he didn't even play basketball. He was in his late 30's with a large family, i never understood it. As soon as a new pair of the latest "hyped" shoe was released, he was wearing it.

HTexan,

You know I have no qualms with you friend, but do you really think it's wise to make an enemy out of Bay?

You know the man is surgical when it comes to executing an owning and will pace himself just right, until he has you where he wants you.

Maybe that minor exchange between the two of you was but a mere misunderstanding, what say you?

That's the "gym shoes" on Bay's list.

Normal people have 1, maybe two hobbies. A golfer probably has golf shoes, but no bowling shoes and no gym shoes.

Surely there are different shoes for different things, but there's no need to have 30 pair of shoes for all occasions if you play basketball once in a blue moon.

I have some normal NIKE Free i wear for every day, they are good for everything.

now your just trying to find exceptions to the rule instead of looking at the bigger picture which is that one pair of good fitting comfortable shoes is fine for just about everything.

golf shoes offer a little bit in the way of lower body stability during the follow through but they arent necessary

bowling shoes. blah. id never wear them if bowling alleys didnt require it. no point

Princess I am 31 and need some shoes for wearing with jeans to look nice, black brown and something go with white shirts, also sneakers for the same reasons.

All i have is a black pair of nike free run 2.0, a pair of white/blue asics, a black pair of dress shoes which are really nice, and some trail type boots, two pair, one lightish brown the other dark brown with some black.

Suggestions?

I am white, shave my head, sometimes sport a goatee but can't right now (for work).

-3 pairs of boat 'deck' shoes for casual wear
-1 pair work boots
-2 pairs of hunting boots (1 set of rubber boots)

Type Timberland Oxford in your search engine and scroll through the images. If you want you could pick out what you like and post them up and we will give you our reviews.

That's because that dress is casual and your stilettos are much dressier.  You might try a platform wedge sandal w/that dress in a light neutral like below or in multi-colored straps that include the purple color even minimally.   You could also go w/a totally different color to contrast but a platform espadrille wedge would look nice imo.

I'd go similar color as dress, medium heel, slingback. Perhaps with very light black or sliver highlights.

As to the other question, I have 9-10 pairs on hand.

2 pairs of dress shoes.

3 pairs of boots(2 pairs of work, one pair more of a dress shoe boot).

4 pairs of sneakers- usually 3 nice pairs, and 1 beater pair.

1 pair special purpose weightlifting  shoes.

I can`t even count how many I have.  My favorite are Alden and JM Weston, Berlutti, although on occasion I will wear Prada or Gucci (Tom Ford era or before of course as they are the only Gucci`s that are actually decently made).

Warning: This post contains content that most of you wont give a f*xk about but: 1) it is a favorite topic of mine and 2) there may be a few souls out there who may find it useful

Adonis

You have failed miserably at this test. No man should ever list Alden (or any American manufacturer) as a favorite 'dress shoe'

Berlutti are for fools who have no knowledge of quality for money and I doubt you own any. If you do, then you are even more of a fool

JM Westons are defensible as a personal preference but just that. Most people who know about 'dress shoes' would not list them as favorites but some will- so fair enough

The mention of Prada or Gucci  I wont even address as it is just downright wrong. Both are (relatively) cheap made shoes with huge 'fool' mark ups

For you and any other members who may want to benefit from some years of experience I offer a small list of 'dress shoes' brands to aspire for. (I limit myself to Ready to Wear, and do not address Made to Order)

John Lobb (Paris)
Edward Green
Silvano Lattanzi
Gaziano & Girling
Lazlo Vass
Santoni Limited Edition (this is stuff u can't really see in the US except for a couple of places -so please do not confuse with Santoni for fools sold in 99% of santoni selling stores)

I could care less about the designer/mfr.  Comfort & fashion.   Styles change too quick to spend $$$$ on exceptional quality.  You can spend more on mens shoes since fashion doesn't change that fast and the basic classic stays in style.for a long time. Men don't have as many trends to work with.  Women definitely don't get the same amount of wear out of a pair.

Depends.on. lifestyle.too
