Which is the same for the Blackhawk..which has the same level of protection. The Blackhawk was better suited for Iraq because of the less mountainous terrain. The shitbags have taken to using airborne IED's lately that could account for the chopper being taken down. They'll rig a number of RPG's to go off over a certain area. They're not great but it looks like it worked this time.

How well does the V-22 fare in combat operations? I see them all the time on training missions along with some of the new stealth aircraft. Our city is directly under a restricted fly zone to be used only by the Air Force, Navy and Marines and the President of the United States. I have some footage of Air Force One doing training runs, but I would NEVER take any photos or video of the other aircraft and helicopters. Its pretty amazing actually.

Has never ever been designed for this. Maybe it was an ambush, there were nmes with rpgs in a place they werent suposed to be... i dont know.

U can pack alot of Marines into the V-22 but they're hanger queens and require alot of maintenance. The Marines like them because they're fast as hell. I've never been in one. Blackhawks/Ch 46/47's and the Ch-53 which the V-22 replaced but not the Osprey.
U can fast rope from a Chinook. They do it all the time, especially the 160th dudes. They may well have been extracting when they got hit.

The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene.

Correct, it is a transport helicopter and it was transporting a lot of people and their gear which would have taken 5 Blackhawk helicopters which would have been more likely to get shot down like a flock of geese. Chinooks may be slow but they can take some hits and it does have weapons.
But let me be clear....regardless of the type of helicopter flown into a war-zone, there's always a chance of being blown out of the sky and killed. That just comes with the job unfortunately.

U.S. officials say the 22 Navy SEAL Team Six members and other troops lost in Saturday's helicopter crash in Afghanistan had rushed to the area to help fellow U.S. troops under fire.
The officials say the SEALs had responded to a request by U.S. Army Rangers who were taking heavy fire after going after a target.
One of the officials says the SEALs had completed their mission, subduing the attackers, and were departing in a U.S. Army Chinook helicopter when it was apparently hit by rocket-propelled grenade fire.
The other official said that the Rangers, special operations forces who work regularly with the SEALs, secured the crash site afterward. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the event while the investigation remains ongoing.

The official said the commander lured US forces to the scene by telling them there was a Taliban meeting taking place there.
The official said that President Hamid Karzai's US-backed government "thinks this was a retaliation attack for the killing of Osama bin Laden."
The Taliban did not make such an assertion when they claimed responsibility for the attack.
Citing intelligence "gathered from the area," the official blamed Qari Tahir, a Taliban commander, for masterminding the attack. He alleged that four Pakistani nationals helped Tahir carry out the strike
He said the intelligence also showed that the Chinook helicopter was brought down by multiple shots including "modern weapons" without giving further details.
The helicopter was attacked from either side of a valley, the only route to the Taliban-dominated Sayd Abad district in Wardak province where the attack happened late on Friday, the official said.
"The Taliban knew which route the helicopter would take," he added.
"That's the only route, so they took position on the either side of the valley on mountains and as the helicopter approached, they attacked it with rockets and other modern weapons. It was brought down by multiple shots," he said.
