Obama's Vineyard Vacation Will Cost Taxpayers Millions
By Paul Bedard
Posted: August 11, 2011
http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2011/08/11/obamas-vineyard-vacation-will-cost-taxpayers-millions
At a time when many more cash-strapped Americans are stuck at home instead of vacationing at the beach, President Obama next week will lead an entourage of several dozens to exclusive Martha's Vineyard island at a cost of millions to taxpayers.
While technically he is paying for his estimated $50,000 a week rental of the 28-acre beachfront Blue Heron Farm in woodsy Chilmark, the dozens of U.S. Secret Service agents, communications officials, top aides, drivers, and U.S. Coast Guard personnel with him will be covered by taxpayers as with every other presidential vacation.[Get your Whispers on your iPad--subscribe to U.S. News Weekly.]
His 11-day stay will require the Coast Guard to keep ships floating near Obama's farm, a presidential helicopter and jet at the ready and security agents on 24-hour duty. Armored SUVs dubbed "war wagons" have been flown in to carry the presidential family around the island. It was the same way when former President George H.W. Bush visited Kennebunkport, Maine and Bill Clinton visited Martha's Vineyard during their presidencies. [See political cartoons about President Obama.]
Typically, say former White House officials, the collection of aides is smaller for a summer vacation than for an official trip. And the motorcade is cut in half, to about 20 cars. What's more, the press corps will be smaller, though they largely pay for themselves.
Obama's vacation comes at an awkward time because of the economic turmoil roiling the nation and Wall Street. Surveys show that a growing number of Americans can't afford even small vacations. [Check out editorial cartoons about the economy.]
But former Clinton spokesman Mike McCurry says that every president needs a break from the confines of the White House.
"We do need to let these guys have vacations and do some reading and thinking outside the box," he said.
What's more, keeping a sizeable crew of aides nearby is critical, he said. "Remember Clinton's trip to Martha's Vineyard in August 1998 when we ended up trying to decapitate bin Laden with a cruise missile strike? That's why the 'entourage' has to accommodate all aspects of the presidency, even on vacation. You never know what might happen. August always produces the unexpected." [See photos of the Obamas behind the scenes.]
And he dismissed the criticism of vacationing presidents. "I think all this 'Why is he taking a vacation?' stuff is ginned up by the media," he said. "I don't think any American will fault him for getting away, especially if he comes back with some fresh ideas on how to create jobs."
Obama will certainly have a lot of space to brainstorm. The $20 million farm on Cobbs Hill Road features four dwellings, a swimming pool and a basketball court. Google Earth shows that there is also a single hole golf area with two bunkers. The president, his wife and two daughters can also go to private Squibnocket Beach or Great Pond. There is an apple orchard, and flower and vegetable gardens. [See photos of Michelle Obama.]
The local Vineyard Gazette reports that the Secret Service is already setting up camp and areas for the media are also being set aside. "Suddenly cell phone service in Chilmark, usually spotty to nonexistent, was crystal clear, another sign that the president is coming," reported the paper's Peter Brannen.
Finding enough housing for staff and security isn't easy. Brannen reported that at the recent town meeting, "Selectman Walter Vail announced that he would be taking a vacation from August 16 to 28 to accommodate Secret Service members who were renting his house."

Barack Obama faces calls to cancel summer holiday
The Telegraph ^ | 8/12/11 | Alex Spillius
With the credit rating of the United States downgraded for the first time, and the stock markets on a rollercoaster ride, critics argue that relaxing on the exclusive Massachusetts island with his family for 10 days at the end of the month would send the wrong signal to voters.
Newt Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House now running for the Republican 2012 nomination, said: "He ought to cancel the vacation - period."
He also demanded that Congress should return from an even longer break of five weeks.
Jay Carney, the White House spokesman, was forced to defend the president's holiday plans.
"I don't think Americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family," he said, adding that "there's no such thing as a presidential vacation".

It’s no time for a presidential vacation
By Colbert I. King, Published: August 12
Is there anyone in the White House with nerve enough to tell Barack Obama that Martha’s Vineyard is the last place on earth that the president of the United States should find himself next week?
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t begrudge the chief executive a little time off from the Oval Office.
But to be leaving town to spend 10 days luxuriating in an affluent, New England summer town when millions of Americans can’t find work? To fly off to the Vineyard when the public is losing faith in Washington’s ability to fix the nation’s economic problems, and with people anxious about their futures?
What is he thinking? It’s not as if the Obama family is living in deprivation in Washington.
Without leaving the White House grounds, they have access to five full-time chefs, a tennis court, a bowling alley, a swimming pool, a jogging trail, a putting green and a movie theater that shows first-run films on demand. That’s hardly roughing it.
And if the president ever feels the need to get away, let’s say to seek a little solitude and tranquility beyond the confines of hot and humid Washington, the American taxpayers have thoughtfully provided a secluded country residence for the first family’s exclusive use in Maryland’s Catoctin Mountain Park. It’s called Camp David. A hardship post it is not.
Camp David comes equipped with 24-hour guard service, including fighter jets, to keep gawkers and riff-raff out of sight. For presidential enjoyment, Camp David’s wooded mountaintop has a swimming pool, a sauna, tennis courts, a bowling alley, a trout stream and movie facilities, again with first-run features on demand.
Plus there are guest cottages should the Obamas wish to have a few friends over.
And, of course, highly trained chefs are also on hand to provide top-quality meals.
Ah, but that seems to be not enough when stacked against Cape Cod.
A Post poll this week showed confidence in Obama to make the right decisions for the country’s economic future is down 10 points, to 33 percent, since January. His vacation decision making ranks right down there, too.
This is not the way a president should be spending his time. Not when, for the first time in U.S. history, the country’s credit rating has been downgraded; when so many families are barely scraping by, many not knowing where the next mortgage or rent payment is coming from.
Not when nearly three-quarters of Americans polled say that they have little or no confidence in Washington’s ability to repair the economy — up from half in October 2010.
The White House confirmed that the president would travel to the Vineyard, presumably in his taxpayer-provided jet, after a bus tour that starts on Monday and takes him through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. “The president,” said the announcement, “will discuss ways to grow the economy, strengthen the middle class, and accelerate hiring in communities and towns across the nation and hear directly from Americans, including small business owners [and] local families.. . .”
Obama shouldn’t quit his visit to America at midweek. I’ll be so bold as to suggest that if his family really has a hankering for the Vineyard, which will mark their third straight summer outing on the island, then, by all means, let them go.
But he must stay behind.
This is no time for the president to dwell in splendid seclusion among the rich and famous. Barack Obama’s got business to attend to.
He should use this summer to spend some time with folks who can’t afford to take a vacation. And not just in Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota, which happen to be states that he won in 2008.
Mr. President, people are hurting all over America. Listen to inner-city parents across the dinner table, blue-collar workers in unemployment lines and suburban, middle-class families one paycheck away from hitting up the in-laws for a loan.
Hear what’s in their hearts. Experience their anger and frustration. Not through cards and letters but firsthand, face to face.
Explain yourself to them. Tell them about your plans to strengthen this weak economy, to help get them on their feet. Tell them about how you will get the better of congressional conservatives who have had a high old time getting the better of you.
Show them, if you can, where you are taking the country and that it’s not you, sir, who’s being taken.
No, Mr. President, Martha’s Vineyard is the last place in the world you should visit next week. You simply don’t have time to take time off from America.

Nor is it surprising that his legion of moronic sheeple are justifying this in the midst of the worst economic crisis in 80 years. ::)
Then again, the less time he spends in Washington the better for this country.

EXACTLY.
According to Obama:
The trip came just days after the President tried to sell his cost-cutting budget to the American people by asking them to stay at home.
‘If you’re a family trying to cut back, you might skip going out to dinner, or you might put off a vacation,’ he said.

The God-King Obama is the ultimate hypocrite.
They aren't capable of thinking for themselves nor are they remotely capable of actually *gasp* criticizing something this guy does. They just fall in line lock-step with the Obama/far-left agenda. They'd make great jackboots.

I'd probably disagree a little here. I think most of us recognize that he never truly gets a break. No matter where he's at, he's getting briefings, updates, has to authorize shit, etc.
But c'mon, lecturing everybody else about how to spend their money and then zipping around on vaca...blah.

He's been on vacation since day one. Why is this a surprise? Its not like works like most presidents.

The Three Problems With Obama's Vacation
By Carole on Aug 18, 2011
http://www.talkingsides.com/blogs/2011/08/18/the-three-problems-with-obama-s-vacation
As President Barack Obama departs on his 10 day Matha's Vineyard vacation, let me first say that I do not begrudge he and his family some time away together and I believe that no matter where he may be the US president is 'always on the job'. But three things about this particular president and this specific vacation prove that, despite his occasional references in campaign speeches, he is completely oblivious to the real economic suffering most Americans currently endure.
Continued...
First and worst, his cruel game of 'I know something you don't know' - If, as a senior administration official claims, President Obama has new ideas that will create jobs and help the poor and middle class; why wait to start putting those ideas in motion? Holding back his alleged plan until after his luxurious vacation shows he does not understand that each new week without a job can destroy another life, another family and more dreams like being able to hold off foreclosure or keep a child in college.
Even someone who has never lived paycheck to paycheck and never had to meet a payroll should be able to understand that there are people who are just a week or two away from personal economic disaster. While claiming to know how to reduce that pressure, Mr. Obama is traipsing off on a high end vacation telling those on the edge of a financial cliff that they'll just have to wait until he gets back from his fun in the sun.
Second, his choice of vacation destination - For security reasons alone, the president of the United States can't spend his summer vacation in a bungalow at the Jersey Shore or standing in long lines at DisneyWorld. But the huge amount of publicity and dollars that a first family vacation draws to a place that is already the playground of America's elite seems like a wasted opportunity. In this dismal economy there are so many American resorts that could really use a moment in that spotlight and after last year's gaffe of making a quick stop at the oil spill affected Gulf Coast before their real vacation, the Obamas should realize the good they could do with a more thoughtful choice.
And third, the cost of his accommodations - While the Obamas are picking up the $50,000 a week rental fee for the 28 acre beachfront estate themselves, spending that kind of money when many Americans desperately need a job that pays half that per year is more proof that this president is tone deaf when it comes to the struggling of ordinary citizens.
Yes, every American president should have the right to take an occasional vacation. But he should not rub his opulent lifestyle in the faces of those who are bearing the weight of his failed economic policies.

The view from Martha's Vineyard
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted: August 18, 2011
6:11 pm Eastern
© 2011
As he and his daughters bicycle around the summer playground of the Northeastern elite, Martha's Vineyard, President Obama is steadily bleeding away both the support of the nation and that of his most loyal constituency.
Several times, his approval rating in Gallup's daily tracking poll has sunk to 39 percent, with disapproval reaching 54 percent. Support for his handling of the economy has dipped to the mid-20s. Only 11 percent of Americans, says Gallup, are satisfied with the way things are going.
Unemployment remains at 9 percent, as it has for two years. The Dow has lately lost 2,000 points, or $3 trillion in wealth wiped out. All that money the Fed pumped out is now being reflected not only in the price of gold, silver and Swiss francs, but in rising consumer prices – inflation. One in five U.S. children is living in poverty.

Middle America, some time ago, decided the "hopey, changey thing" was not working out for them. Now the patience of African-Americans with a president for whom they voted 24 to one is wearing thin.
At a Black Caucus confab in Detroit, Rep. Maxine Waters told an angry audience that if and when Black America demands that they confront Obama, the caucus is ready "to have the conversation."
A collision between Obama and his base seems inevitable. For Black America's situation, though tough today, seems certain to get tougher. Why?
First, black Americans held a significant share of the subprime mortgages that went sour when housing prices went south, and are thus overrepresented among those who lost homes.
Second, black Americans, with a higher rate of poverty, depend more on the entitlement and social programs that Obama cannot avoid hoisting onto the chopping block in any "balanced" plan for dealing with the deficit-debt crisis.
Third, African-Americans are overrepresented among the 22 million who work for local, state and federal governments. And while government workers came out best in terms of job security and salary hikes in the stimulus days of 2009 and 2010, in the austerity days of 2011, they are getting their fair share of pink slips. It is almost a truism: Whenever Middle America goes into recession, Black America flirts with depression.
Consider the U.S. Postal Service, with 600,000 employees, running a deficit of $8.5 billion and facing layoffs of 120,000. According to William Burrus, ex-president of the Postal Workers Union, 21 percent of all postal employees are black. When the cuts come, minorities will take a big hit.
(Column continues below)
That African-Americans favor a powerful federal government is understandable. After all, it was the federal government that crushed the Confederacy, freed the slaves, sent troops to integrate the South, enacted the civil rights laws, imposed affirmative action on companies and colleges, and created the Great Society that provided trillions in wealth transfers and welfare benefits and employs a share of the black population that is nearly twice its representation in the labor force.
That African-Americans would see states' rights conservatives and small-government Republicans as hostile to the one powerful institution most friendly to them should come as a no surprise.
Here we come to Barack's dilemma.
The nation he leads is facing a deficit-debt crisis that comes of an inescapable truth: Whether we are talking about commitments to go to war to defend scores of nations or commitments to entitlement and Great Society programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, earned income tax credits, food stamps and Pell grants, we Americans have handed out promissory notes we no longer have the means to meet.
We can no longer deliver what we have promised.
We are running deficits of 10 percent of gross domestic product with a national debt over 100 percent. We are on the path that Italy is following, which is the path that Greece pursued.
We are an overextended empire and commonwealth facing strategic and fiscal bankruptcy. If Obama is to lead the nation out of the crisis it confronts, he has to preside over a downsizing of the welfare-warfare state – the same state that sustains his base.
Not to worry, we are told. When the lazy days of summer are over, Obama will present Congress with his big plan for resurrecting the economy and ensuring the long-term solvency of the nation.
Obama's September program – indeed, any credible plan to revive the economy and bring our books into balance – has to include a rollback of U.S. commitments at home and abroad.
Yet, domestically, this cannot be done without reducing future Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits, and cutting and capping the social programs of the Great Society. Moreover, half the nation cannot freeload forever, as is the case today, contributing nary a dime in federal income taxes.
And such reforms must adversely impact most Obama's political and personal base.
If he proposes new taxes, tea-party Republicans fix bayonets.
If he proposes downsizing the government and cutting and capping social programs, his most loyal constituents rise up against him.
Enjoy the Vineyard, Mr. President.

Obama’s Vineyard Break Teeing Off Many Critics (Obama Backlash Gaining Speed)
Boston Herald ^ | August 18, 2011 | Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa with Megan Johnson
Posted on August 18, 2011 8:21:32 PM EDT by lbryce
Hey, President Obama: The stock market’s in the toilet, the nation’s credit rating tanked and unemployment’s still over 9 percent, what are you gonna do now?
He’s going to the Vineyard!
The prez and his family are scheduled to arrive on The Rock late this afternoon to begin a 10-day vacation on the celebrity-choked summer home to the rich, famous and well connected. And as the first family got set to check into Blue Heron Farm, their $50,000-a-week summer rental in West Tisbury, the chorus of catcalls continued over the commander-in-chief’s ill-timed retreat.
Former Mass. governor Mitt Romney said Obama should take a pass on the Farm Neck Golf Club, call Congress back to Washington and get going on the economy.
“If I were president today, I wouldn’t be looking to go spend 10 days on Martha’s Vineyard,” the GOP White House wannabe said in a Chicago radio interview yesterday.
“Now, Martha’s Vineyard is in my home state of Massachusetts so I don’t want to say anything negative about people vacationing there,” Romney continued. “But if you’re the president of the United States, and the nation is in crisis, and we’re in a jobs crisis right now, then you shouldn’t be out vacationing. Instead, you should be focusing on getting the economy going again.”
Obama, who will be spending his summer hols on the island for the third time in three years, is expected to maintain a very low profile this year — even lower than his usual under-the-radar M.O. In contrast to former president Bill Clinton, who was a regular one-man party during his numerous forays to The Rock, the current First Vacationer is a recluse anyway.

Barack Obama's Martha's Vineyard vacation looks like an act of presidential hara-kiri
By Nile Gardiner World Last updated: August 19th, 2011
Obama departs Washington for his vacation on Martha's Vineyard (Photo: Reuters)
President Obama begins his 10-day vacation in Martha’s Vineyard today, the third year in a row he has taken his summer holiday in one of America’s most expensive resorts. During his time there he will be experiencing the kind of luxury that the vast majority of ordinary Americans can only dream about: Barack Obama will be staying in a compound which costs more to rent for a single week than most American households earn in a year.
In previous years Obama’s expensive vacations have attracted relatively little attention from the US media, with the exception of Michelle Obama’s trip to southern Spain last August, which led to her being dubbed a “modern-day Marie Antoinette” by one columnist. This year, however, even some flagships of the liberal mainstream media have been raising eyebrows. The Washington Post’s coverage for example has been unusually critical, for a publication that usually shies away from making an issue out what it would traditionally view as the president’s private life:
With 14 million Americans out of work, a volatile stock market and a historic downgrade of the country’s credit rating, President Obama is set to begin a 10-day retreat Thursday at a 28-acre Martha’s Vineyard compound called Blue Heron Farm, which costs an estimated $50,000 per week to rent. That divide — and the presumed hypocrisy of a president who has pledged not to rest “until every American looking for a job can find one,” going golfing and biking on an island playground for wealthy celebrities — has been too much for political pundits to resist.
Obama’s decision to head to a popular playground for wealthy elites in the face of intense media scrutiny is a surprisingly reckless move. It is a particularlly foolish act just 14 months away from a presidential election where he will likely end up the underdog rather than the favourite. The contrast between an imperious, out-of-touch US president and the economic plight of tens of millions of Americans could not be starker. Obama’s holiday will no doubt come to haunt him in November next year, with the economy the number one issue for voters.
Which begs the question – why did the president go ahead with his vacation despite the worst approval ratings of his presidency, plunging stock markets, falling consumer confidence, and overwhelming public disillusion with his handling of the economy? I think the answer lies in Obama’s professorial-style arrogance, and a condescending approach towards ordinary Americans.
This is a US presidency with a distinctly Upstairs Downstairs approach towards running the country. At the end of the day, Barack Obama is in a serious state of denial if he believes the US electorate won’t care if their president acts with impunity at a time of tremendous economic turmoil and uncertainty. I suspect that when he returns to Washington in September, Mr Obama may get a rather nasty shock in the polls from angry voters who won’t take kindly to their president going AWOL in the lap of luxury during a major financial crisis.

Economy woes got you down? Time for a Vineyard vacay!
By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa with Megan Johnson / Inside Track | Friday, August 19, 2011 | http://www.bostonherald.com | The Inside Track
WEST TISBURY — While the stock market took another nosedive on repeat recession fears yesterday, President Obama landed on Martha’s Vineyard for 10 days of fun in the sun, hitting the summer playground of the rich and famous during worsening economic turmoil.
Air Force One touched down at Otis Air National Guard Base at about 6 p.m. last night, an hour behind schedule. The president boarded Marine One helicopter for the short hop to the Vineyard, then traveled by motorcade to Blue Heron Farm, his 28-acre hideaway on Tisbury Great Pond. First lady Michelle Obama and kids Sasha and Malia reportedly arrived on the island separately earlier in the day.
Like previous years, the president’s arrival was closed to the public. He landed in a back corner at Martha’s Vineyard Airport blocked from view by a wall of school buses.
The island’s latest First Tourist cuts a much lower profile than his Vineyard predecessor, Bill Clinton, who vacationed here six out of his eight years in office. When Bubba landed on The Rock he would be greeted by throngs of admirers, and handlers would stage a big tarmac lovefest, with invited guests lined up to greet him and the fam.
Obama, whose approval ratings are hovering at an all-time low, could probably use a little bucking up from the Vineyard faithful. But security concerns have put the kibosh on that.
Still, the president’s admirers were not deterred.
Several dozen families lined the motorcade route from the airport to Blue Heron Farm to cheer and wave to the prez, who traveled to the island with golf buddy Marvin Nicholson and first dog Bo last night. In front of Alley’s General Store in Chilmark more than 100 well-wishers waited more than an hour hoping for a glimpse of the commander in chief.
“It’s very exciting,” said Alessandro Decio of Milan, Italy, who was waving to the prez along with his wife and kids Maria, 10, Pietro, 13, and Eugenio, 15.
Alessandro, who was wearing an Obama “hope” T-shirt, said the fam, who are on a three-week U.S. vacation, are big fans.
“What can I say,” added his wife. “Our point of comparison is (scandal plagued Italian P.M. Silvio) Berlusconi!”
Fellow supporter Marwan Elmasri of Groton, Mass., said he wasn’t buying partisan criticism that the prez should have canceled his summer hols in deference to the economy.
“Why in the world shouldn’t he take a vacation?” said Marwan Elmasari. “We’re all on vacation!”
Last night a posse of Vineyard boldfacers, including Harvard profs Alan Dershowitz and Charles Ogletree; novelists Richard North Patterson and Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks; Rose Styron, the widow of author William Styron, and her daughter Alexandra, author of “Reading My Father”; singer Kate Taylor; and DNC Chairwoman and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Shultz turned out for a $100-a-head fund-raiser dubbed “Voices For Obama” at the Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs.
The event was followed by a $500- to $1,000-a-head private dinner at the summer home of Ron and Judy Davenport, the founders of Pittsburgh-based Sheridan Broadcasting and longtime Obama supporters.
Obama was not expected at the event last night. Like previous years, the president likely will low-key it during his summer break. And while aides are not thrilled about the prospect of him being photographed on the links while the nation simmers over the economy, the First Duffer is not expected to forgo his favorite pastime in deference to political concerns.
Word is, he may tee off today at Mink Meadows, a public course and the island’s least chi-chi golf club. It is also, coincidentally, the course with the most difficult vantage point for photographers.

What Shared Sacrifice? Obamas Fly 'His & Her' Jets to Lux Vineyard Vacay
Friday, August 19, 2011 | Kristinn
Posted on Friday, August 19, 2011 9:55:27 AM by kristinn
The jet-setting Obamas arrived at their $50,000 per week Martha's Vineyard vacation destination yesterday on separate taxpayer provided jets.
The extravagant travel choice flies in the face of Barack Obama's war on private jet owners and his call for "shared sacrifice" to ease the exploding federal budget deficit.
Michelle Obama and the two Obama daughters took what appears to be a Gulfstream jet while the president and family dog Bo flew Air Force One to a nearby airfield and were then taken by helicopter to Martha's Vineyard, according to an account by the Martha's Vineyard Gazette and other reports. No reason was given for the Obamas traveling on separate jets.

Krauthammer: Problem With Obama's Vacation Is "The Choice Of Place"
Charles Krauthammer discusses the president's Martha's Vineyard vacation:
"Choosing an exclusive enclave like the Vineyard after spending three days on the road railing against the rich and the wealthy and the millionaires and the billionaires and the corporate jet owners who vacation exactly in the same place and then spending 10 days in their company speaks of a kind of dissonance or hypocrisy."

And he's off! Obama all smiles as he jets to Martha's Vineyard - as approval plummets
Daily Mail ^ | 8/18/11 | Staff
With his approval rating dropping to historic lows, unemployment at an epic high and the Dow closing in the gutter, President Barack Obama is cutting his losses and taking a few days off. The president will be staying with his family at the Blue Heron Farm, a sprawling, $50,000-per-week estate with plenty of room for staff and Secret Service agents accompanying him on the trip. Mr Obama boarded Air Force One with First Dog Bo on Thursday as a new poll showed a startling loss in the commander-in-chief's favourability before he heads to Martha's Vineyard.

President Barack Obama spent his first full day at Martha's Vineyard, Mass., on Friday on his annual family vacation, scheduled to last through Aug. 27. Like other presidents, Obama has come under criticism for leaving Washington to spend time relaxing.
Here's a look at how many vacation days Obama has taken (not counting trips to Camp David), compared with previous presidents at the same point in their presidencies.
The tallies were compiled by CBS News radio reporter Mark Knoller, whose unofficial but authoritative record-keeping is cited by the White House.
-Prior to his current Martha's Vineyard trip, Obama had taken 10 vacations of varying lengths - spanning all or part of 61 days.
-At the same point in George W. Bush's presidency, he had made 26 visits to his Texas ranch spanning all or part of 180 days.
-At the same point in Bill Clinton's presidency, he had taken two vacations on Martha's Vineyard spanning 26 days and was starting a 21-day stay in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Agree. Don't keep playing the class warfare game, lecturing people about extravagance, then go spend a week or two on some estate, or one of the nicest beaches in the world. Go spend a week down range with the troops.

Great point.
::) ::)
Please - even obamas own party is pissed off over this, its only the 95ers and sycophants like yourself sticking up for this crap.
But I really hope he keeps it up. He will be in the mid thirties shortly.

The President's Island Retreat Is his visit to Martha's Vineyard a sign that he's giving up?
By PEGGY NOONAN
www.wsj.com
The phrase of the day is "new lows." It blares from every screen. The number of Americans satisfied with the ways things are going hits new lows—11%. President Obama's popularity: new lows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average this year: new lows. Maybe it will enter ordinary language. "Charlie, it's been ages. How are you, how's Betty?" "I'm experiencing some volatility, but she's inching toward new lows."
The market is dispirited. I'm wondering if the president is, too, and if that won't carry implications for the 2012 race. You can imagine him having lunch with political advisers, hearing some unwanted advice—"Don't go to Martha's Vineyard!"—putting his napkin by his plate, pushing back from the table, rising, and saying in a clipped, well-modulated voice: "I'm tired. I'm going. If they want this job so much let them have it."
How could he not be depressed? He has made big mistakes since the beginning of his presidency and has been pounded since the beginning of his presidency. He's got to be full of doubts at this point about what to do. His baseline political assumptions have proved incorrect, his calculations have turned out to be erroneous, his big decisions have turned to dust. He thought they'd love him for health care, that it was a down payment on greatness. But the left sees it as a sellout, the center as a vaguely threatening mess, the right as a rallying cry. He thought the stimulus would turn the economy around. It didn't. He thought there would be a natural bounce-back a year ago, with "Recovery Summer." There wasn't. He thought a toe-to-toe, eyeball-to-eyeball struggle over the debt ceiling would enhance his reputation. The public would see through to the dark heart of Republican hackery and come to recognize the higher wisdom of his approach. That didn't happen either.
Nothing worked! And nothing's going to work. He's the smartest guy in the room, but he's got the reverse Midas touch. Everything he touches turns to—well, unsatisfying outcomes.

.The president shows all the signs of becoming a man who, around the time he unveils his new jobs proposal in September, is going to start musing in interviews about whether anyone can be a successful president now, what with the complexity of the problems and the forces immediately arrayed, in a politically polarized age, against any specific action. That was probably his inner rationale for not coming up with a specific debt-ceiling plan: Why give the inevitable forces a target? But his refusal to produce a plan became itself the target. Reverse Midas.
Under these circumstances he could not possibly be enjoying his job. On the stump this week in the Midwest, he should have been on fire with the joy of combat, he should have had them whooping and hollering with fresh material and funny lines. But even at his feistiest, he was wilted. Distracted. Sometimes he seems to be observing himself and his interactions as opposed to being himself and having interactions. His audiences wanted to show support, it was clear, that's why they came. But there was something tentative in their response, as if they wanted to come through for the applause line but couldn't figure out exactly where the applause line was. The president was dropping his g's, always a terrible sign, a kind of bowing that assumes he speaks from a great height. He also started saying "folks" again. That too is a tell. It's the word politicians who think they're better and brighter than normal people use when they're trying to make normal people think they're normal.
Now he goes on vacation. Every president deserves a vacation, to the extent presidents can really have vacations, and that extent is limited. If a vacation is defined as something carefree and removed, then presidents never get vacations. There are always briefings, calls, the decisions on how to respond to a crisis or event. It's hard to begrudge any president his attempts at escape. But political foes do. Mr. Obama's like to show him playing golf. The Democrats did the same to Eisenhower. Nixon was knocked for going so often to San Clemente, Reagan and George W. Bush to their ranches.
Mr. Obama shouldn't be faulted for wanting to rest, relax and spend whole days with his family. But the timing of this vacation is incongruent, and so is the location.
On the timing, there's an air of economic crisis hanging over everything, a sense that other shoes may drop. Actually it's a sense of something impending, with unemployment high, Europe broke and the Mideast reaching full boil. A politician who wanted to impart a sense of leadership in crisis, who passionately wanted to keep the presidency, and who was prudently anxious about his prospects just might let such a moment change his plans.

.As for the location, the president loves Martha's Vineyard, and there's a lot to love—beautiful beaches, hills, biking. But it's a little island whose summertime population is dominated by those who, due to their affluence, are essentially detached from everyday life in America. It's a playground of the liberal rich: hedge-fund maestros, network producers, Wall Street heavyweights, left-leaning activists. It's the kind of place that reverberates in the national imagination—that tags you as elitist no matter how many g's you drop.
Both parties have to deal with certain tropes, symbols and clichés. If you're a conservative president, you probably shouldn't spend your vacation at a house on the edge of an exclusive golf club that's had a history of problems admitting blacks, Jews, and the self-made sons of Dad's old half-Irish, half-Puerto Rican cook. If you're a liberal president, you probably shouldn't be on vacation at a place known for snooty liberal insularity.
Mr. Obama's media specialists probably told him what Bill Clinton's mavens told him: If you're going to the Vineyard, you have to go to some real American place first, like the Rockies. Which Mr. Clinton did. Going to the Vineyard didn't harm him. But Mr. Clinton had prosperity, and Americans will forgive a lot from a guy who does nothing to stop prosperity, or actually may help it along.
Mr. Obama doesn't have that advantage. It seems important to him to be true to himself—not to be the kind of person who'd poll-test a vacation. Or maybe he thinks that no matter what he does, it won't work, so what the heck. But his decision to go now, and there, seems either ham-handed or vaguely defiant.
In early 2010 this space made much of the president's pre-State of the Union interview with Diane Sawyer, in which she pressed the president about his political predicaments. He said: "I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president." I thought at the time: He means it, he can accept being a one-termer.
Maybe he's feeling it now more than ever.
Maybe it means not much will change in terms of his leadership between now and the election.
Maybe he'll be as wilted next year as he was this week.

The president is vacationing on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, but he recorded his weekly Saturday radio and Internet address earlier in the week while in Alpha, Ill., during an economy-focused Midwestern bus tour.

Obamas Share Sacrifice at Pricey Vineyard Restaurant
by KEITH KOFFLER on AUGUST 19, 2011, 10:00 PM
President and Mrs. Obama are sharing in the sacrifice tonight at the Beach Plum Restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard, which features an array of overpriced selections for the first couple to choose from that could easily bring the bill within range of $200.
They might, for example, choose to start the meal with a $15 chunk of pizza cheese – I’m sorry, “Fresh Mozzarella” with “Fresh Basil, vine ripened tomatoes, aged balsamic reduction, and chive dill.”
This is a good mix because some things are fresh, and some things are aged.
But the sacrifice really gets serious with the entree, where the Obamas may want to order half a chicken for $38. Excuse me, please, “Herb crusted roasted half Katama Farm chicken; garlic mashed potatoes with steamed broccollini, rosemary jus.”
This would be perfect for me, because when I get tired of Perdue, I alway switch to Katama Farm.
There’s also the steamed twin Menemsha lobsters for $48. Isn’t Menemsha some kind of club for geniuses? I’ll take those.
But to be sure that they’re twins, I’ll need a BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
The restaurant notes, “We would be happy to split single entree items for an additional charge of $15.”
Well, of course! I’m sure being paid $15 to heap the same junk on two plates instead of one would make them very happy indeed.
So if the Obamas go with the cheese and the chicken we’re at $53 before dessert, tax, tip and booze. Now, looks like it’s bring-your-own-drinks with a corkage fee of $10. So if we assume $10 for a drink, $10 for dessert – you know they’re both having dessert – a 6.25 percent Massachusetts restaurant tax, and a 20 percent tip, we’re at $93 each, or $186 for the couple.
The average weekly Social Security check for a retired worker is about $274. Just saying.
And guess what? No peas on the menu. The Obamas don’t have to eat their peas.

Obama pays Sunday visit to CEO

Close The presidential motorcade on Martha's Vineyard peeled out of Blue Heron Farms at 5:15 p.m. with the president and Valerie Jarrett in tow.
After 10 minutes, we made an abrupt left turn on John Cottle Road -- an unpaved, deeply rutted eight-foot-wide private path hemmed in by ivy, scrub oak and big, scary boulders.
After bottoming out four times -- we're talking two-foot holes in a sand-and-gravel road, along with one hairpin turn -- Obama and Jarrett arrived at West Tisbury home of their friends, Brian and Aileen Roberts, spokesman Josh Earnest informs us. It was 5:30 p.m.
Roberts is chairman and CEO of Comcast.

White House: Vacationing Obama working on economy
Yahoo ^ | 8/22/11 | Alister Bull - Reuters
VINEYARD HAVEN, Massachusetts (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has taken heat for taking a vacation when the U.S. economy is struggling, but aides are striving to make clear he is not neglecting the country's finances during his break.
On Monday, Obama met with a top economic adviser and spoke to investor Warren Buffett and Ford Motor Co. chief executive Alan Mulally about the economy, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
Earnest also announced that Obama will travel to Detroit in two weeks to discuss the economy on the U.S. Labor Day holiday on September 5, setting up a major address on jobs he is to deliver later in the month.
The date of that address has not been set.
Obama will spend part of the day with workers and then make remarks to the Metro Detroit Central Labor Council, Earnest said.
With Buffett, the chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway, Obama discussed the overall U.S. economic outlook and "reaction to the headwinds we've experienced over the last couple of months," Earnest told reporters in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where Obama is staying with his family.
...
Some critics from the rival Republican party had questioned whether it was appropriate for Obama to take his annual break given the country's economic problems, including an unemployment rate stuck above 9 percent and weak growth in the first half of 2011.
TRYING TO JUMP-START THE ECONOMY
Although his schedule includes family outings, golf games and receptions, Obama is expected to spend much of his nine days on the resort island working on a program meant to jump-start the economy and find budget savings that surpass the $1.5 trillion goal of a new congressional deficit-cutting committee.

Barack Obama: He's come undone
The wheels are off the Obama bus. It's up on the cinder blocks on some rental property in Martha's Vineyard this weekend. It is the end of the summer of discontent for a president who's clearly in over his head and whose wallowing is most unbecoming.
Mr. Obama's economic policy prescriptions, textbook Keynesian mumbo jumbo, have failed. History would have been instructive had only he been learned in the discipline. Obviously, he's not. Next month, he'll return with yet another chapter of the novella best titled "Hocus Pocus."
Policy failures aside, we can only wonder if America also should be worried about the mental state of this president. Just prior to his Midwestern bus tour, at a private New York fundraiser, Obama's reported to have likened opposition to his presidency to the persecution of Martin Luther King. Then, on tour, his maudliness plunged deeper as he compared his plight to the sufferings of Abraham Lincoln.
As Gettysburg College history professor Allen C. Guelzo reminded in National Review Online, Mr. Lincoln rose to the challenge and exhibited greatness in his leadership. But, "In our current national agony ... we have come to see a littleness, not a greatness, in Barack Obama. And it is not for him that we feel sorry, but for ourselves."
For it is a tragedy of our own making.

[NBC] Comcast's Roberts hosts President Obama on Martha's Vineyard
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | August 24, 2011 | By Bob Fernandez
In a convoy of black SUVs, the vacationing President Obama went out of his way Sunday to stop by the house of a friend on Martha's Vineyard.
The Obama reception seems the freshest example of a higher profile that Roberts, head of the nation's largest cable/media company, has assumed since Comcast closed its deal for NBC Universal Inc. earlier this year.
Obama and close aide Valerie Jarrett were hosted by Roberts at [his] multimillion-dollar North Shore mansion. Neither the White House nor Comcast would say how many people attended the reception.
Comcast, a company with legislative and regulatory issues teed up in Washington, also seems to be tightening its relations with the Obama administration.
Roberts has joined the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, serving with Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, and others.
Comcast also is heavily promoting a $9.99-a-month discount Internet service for low-income families that it promised as part of its deal for NBCU. Cohen and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former Obama chief of staff, held a news conference in Chicago announcing the service in late May.

Michelle Obama shows up her husband in tiny purple bike shorts as the President lags behind in jeansMr Obama's approval rating today hit record low of minus 26
First family enjoyed cycle ride during vacation on Martha's Vineyard
By John Stevens
Last updated at 8:18 AM on 24th August 2011
Michelle Obama showed off her enviably toned thighs as she powered past the President in tiny purple cycling shorts on the first family's bike ride on Martha's Vineyard today.
Wearing a fashionable printed T-shirt and Converse trainers, the First Lady showed that she still has style, even when on vacation.
But her husband looked goofy and tired as he lagged behind wearing a baggy black polo shirt, and perhaps more surprisingly jeans.
Ahead of the pack: First Lady Michelle Obama was wearing a tight pair of purple cycling shorts
Ready for action: Mrs Obama looked more prepared for the ride than her tired looking husband
In the Massachussetts sunshine, the Commander-in-Chief looked uncomfortable in the heavy denim trousers.
Mr Obama had rolled up the bottom of the jeans, in perhaps an attempt to avoid them getting stuck in the bicycle chain, or maybe because he was feeling the heat.
The President seemed to have his clothing hoping for a more lesiurely paced cycle than his wife.
The ride came as Mr Obama's approval rating reached a record low of minus 26.
The poll for Tuesday showed that 19 per cent of the nation's voters strongly approve of his performance,
compared to 45 per cent who strongly disapprove.
Trip: The first family were riding in Manuel F Correllus State Forest in West Tisbury, Massachusetts
Fashionable: Mrs Obama wears a T-shirt printed with a trompe l'oeil necklace
Not hot Mr President? Mr Obama's choice of jeans for the ride on such a sunny day may have been surprising
Mr President? A bike rider smiles as he passes Barack Obama and his daughter Malia
Path: Barack Obama and daughter Malia ride past a fellow cyclist during their family vacation
This previous low was minus 24, which was reached yesterday and also in September 2010.
Super-fit Mrs Obama revealed her smooth thighs on the ride this morning, showing the results of her gruelling exercise regime.
She wore a white T-shirt with a print of a trompe l'oeil necklace.
Mr Obama ignored a reporter's shouted question on the whereabouts of Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi as he cycled through Manuel F Correllus State Forest.
Aides said Mr Obama got national security and economic briefings before setting out under bright, sunny skies to hit the bike trail for a quick spin.
Safety first: Mr Obama was wearing a cycle helmet, unlike on his vacation two years ago
Vacation: First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha ride bikes during their family vacation to Martha's Vineyard
Cycle: Barack Obama rides alongside his daughter Malia during their family vacation
Vacation: The President wore a black polo shirt and matching black helmet
The President arrived last Thursday for a 10-day break from Washington that has been interrupted by developments in Libya. He is scheduled to return to the White House on Saturday.
The 5,100-acre forest has become a favourite for the first family who also went cycling there during their previous two summers on the island off the Massachusetts coast.
The President, who was wearing a cycle helmet, appeared to have learnt his lesson from his bike ride there two years ago when he sparked complaints from bike-safety advocates after he was photographed without a helmet.

Obama Hobnobs With Friends on Vineyard Family Vacation
By DEVIN DWYER (@devindwyer)
Aug. 24, 2011
President Obama has spent part of his family vacation on Martha's Vineyard away from his wife and daughters, schmoozing with friends on the golf course and at their private oceanfront homes.
His island entourage includes a mix of familiar faces and longtime confidantes, many of whom have ties to his native Chicago, and some deep-pocket donors eager to help him win another term.
Obama has ventured to the golf course three of the six days he's been on the Vineyard, playing with White House trip director Marvin Nicholson, aide Michael Brush, attorney and Washington insider Vernon Jordan and family friend Dr. Eric Whitaker.
Whitaker, a physician and executive at the University of Chicago Medical Center, is considered one of Obama's closest friends. He regularly plays golf with the president at a course in Washington.
The presidential foursome on Saturday also included UBS Americas CEO Robert Wolf, a member of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and a major campaign donor. Wolf gave the maximum legal contribution to Obama in 2008 and again for 2012, Federal Election Commission records show.
Photos of the Obamas on Martha's Vineyard
Off the course, Obama has spent time rubbing elbows with some of his most elite supporters, attending what the White House has described as two "informal receptions" hosted by his friends.
On Saturday, Obama visited the home of Harvard University law professor Charles Ogletree, who taught both the President and First Lady in law school and regularly summers on the island, according to local press reports.
Ogletree one day earlier co-hosted a Democratic fundraiser – billed as "Voices for Obama" – at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, where Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz gave the keynote address.
Then on Sunday, Obama traveled to the West Tisbury mansion of Comcast CEO Brian and Aileen Roberts, where he spent more than an hour mingling at an intimate gathering.
Roberts, who oversees the nation's largest video and internet company, serves on the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. While FEC records indicate Roberts has not yet contributed to the president's reelection campaign, one of his Comcast colleagues – executive vice president David Cohen – is a top Obama fundraiser, bundling more than $500,000 for the 2012 campaign so far this year.
Cohen and his wife Rhonda also attended the Roberts reception, according to local media reports. The White House would not confirm the names of attendees, saying the event was private.
The president was not joined by the first lady or his daughters at either event.
The White House has dismissed the suggestion that the receptions involved fundraising.
"I can state for you unequivocally that the events that the President attended over the last couple of evenings were purely social occasions," White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Monday.
Officials also note that Obama has been spending a "decent amount of time" fulfilling his responsibilities as president even though he is out of Washington.
He has received regular briefings on the situation in Libya, the east coast earthquake and preparations for Hurricane Irene, aides said, and he has placed several calls to business leaders and members of his economic team as he prepares a new jobs plan for early September.
"There have been some things that have intervened" in the president's vacation, Earnest told reporters Wednesday. "But I also -- it's fair to say that he's gotten an opportunity to spend some time with his daughters before they have to go back to school. And I -- that's something that he's enjoyed quite a bit."

do you like your life?
What life? You mean being forced to live in the spare bedroom in a shitty neighborhood because mommy won't move somewhere else? Or being scared to leave the house because the "animals" that are all over the neighborhood would be lining up to jack the little whinesack of his lunch money? Substituting the internet 24/7 for interaction with reality? Being busted over and over again as the biggest liar on the board? Lacking real life credibility and e-life dignity? Having your most treasured possession to be your hard drive that is full of photoshopped Obama pictures?
What kind of "life" is that?

On the Vineyard, Obama fever is no longer raging [If You Lose Martha’s Vineyard...]
The Boston Globe ^ | August 24, 2011 | Donovan Slack
VINEYARD HAVEN - When President Obama took his first trip to Martha’s Vineyard after taking office, the excitement among locals here was palpable, from the signs of support strung across shop windows and front porches to a full-page newspaper ad taken out by 125 Vineyard grandmothers in support of his health care plan.
This week, with the jobless rate stuck above 9 percent and the president’s nationwide approval rating at its lowest level, the Vineyard’s broad allegiance shows cracks, leaving some islanders with a more textured, even tormented feeling about the president.
“I just have to say I feel really uncomfortable, because I love loving him,’’ said Leslie Pearlson, a real estate broker on the island.
At the core of islanders’ misgivings is the shaky local economy. Although the Vineyard is sometimes depicted as a playground for the rich and famous, the numbers tell another side of the story.
Empty storefronts dot main streets in Vineyard Haven, Edgartown, and elsewhere. According to the island’s Chamber of Commerce, at least one member of nearly every Vineyard household is dependent on summer business, which softened during the recession and still has not recovered.

Cops deflate Obama protesters' plan to display inflatable rat on Martha's Vineyard
The Daily Caller ^ | 8/25/2011 | Matthew Boyle
The protesters brought the giant inflatable rat to Martha's Vineyard to 'remind' President Obama of his administration's 'job-killing' policies. Cops broke it up, and made them deflate the rat. One protester was arrested after videotaping a conversation between the local police chief and another protester. He was charged with 'illegal wiretapping,' for videotaping the conversation.

How Obama Spent His Summer Vacation
The strangest PR debacle of a weird presidency. by John Hayward 08/25/2011
21
Comments
Barack Obama’s misadventures in Martha’s Vineyard are some of the stranger unforced public-relations errors in recent memory. Spending a fortune to jet off to a fabled playground of the rich, while the country suffers from his recessionary economic policies, was a bizarre slap in the face to an electorate that has already come to view this President as arrogant and out-of-touch. “Optics” matter. Camp David is a nice vacation spot, too.
Naturally, Obama played a lot of golf on vacation. Part of the problem with skipping off to the golf course so frequently is that when he plays a lot of golf on vacation, he gets heat for it. Upon learning that Obama “played the trifecta” by hitting all three of the big golf courses in Martha’s Vineyard, Downgrade America finds itself wondering how much that costs.
The snarky White House response of asking about Speaker John Boehner’s handicap was a disaster. It’s childish, it keeps people talking about the President’s incessant putting, it diminishes the stature of an office we like to think of as uniquely important, and it puts Obama in the middle of a very large glass house with stones in his hands.
Developments in Obama's Libyan war didn’t cut his vacation short, and the Great D.C. Quake didn’t even pull him off the links. The latter incident is a relatively minor criticism – nothing happening in post-apocalypse D.C. required him to scoot off to a command post – but it looks really bad in context. Repeated images of Obama’s disengagement produce the kind of “optics” that play on an IMAX screen.
The media launched a desperate effort to describe the Martha’s Vineyard misadventure as a “working vacation.” They’ve even tried congratulating him for “working in golf during his working vacation.” Photos of him looking serious while meeting with aides and taking phone calls proliferated. Try Googling the phrase “Obama working vacation” to get an idea of how earnest this effort at image control has been.
Speaking of earnest, White House spokesman John Earnest tried to wave off criticism of the Obama vacation as “cable chatter,” saying the President knows “this is a job that he’s responsible for doing wherever he is, whether he’s sitting in the Oval office, or whether he’s caught on the golf course when an emerging action takes place.”
One of the problems with this defense is that Americans see the current economic crisis as unique, a view the Obama Administration has strongly encouraged. I would imagine the increasingly disenchanted public remembers all those loud promises that the President “will not rest” until “everyone looking for a job can find one,” especially since they were made as recently as two weeks ago.
Unique challenges call for remarkable leadership and sacrifice, not scheduled vacation romps… much less a President who never seems to do anything except show himself a good time, and raise funds for his re-election campaign. He’s spent plenty of time hanging around with deep-pockets supporters during this “working vacation.”
Now the President is getting some flack for the possibility that he’ll go home early to avoid Hurricane Irene. It would be damned silly for the POTUS to sit there and get pummeled. A massive hurricane is a perfectly good reason to end the vacation early. The problem is that people keep thinking about all the perfectly good reasons he shouldn’t have gone in the first place.
As the vacation wraps up with tales of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “disgusting” spending sprees - said total over $10 million of taxpayer money over the past year - and reports that some residents of Martha’s Vineyard will be glad to see the Obamas go, you have to wonder how the White House political team failed to realize how awful all of this would look. Who thought it would be a good idea to cram the huge presidential entourage onto a small island, at massive taxpayer expense, in the middle of a seemingly endless recession? Is Obama basically daring his last few dead-end supporters to abandon him?
Someone at Martha’s Vineyard took that dare, and put up a sign on the route most often traveled by the presidential motorcade:

Overall, 46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) at least somewhat disapprove.
Obviously, Obama needs to step up his game if he has hopes of a second term. We'll see what the next year brings.

President Obama Leads All Republican Challengers In Iowa
By ThePresidentialCandidate s.US on Aug 25, 2011 in 2012 President | 0 Comments
In a new PPP poll President Obama holds double digit leads against all potential Republican general election challengers in Iowa. Obama won the state in 2008 by 9% over John McCain (54% to 45%.)
This is remarkable because Iowa is the state where the Republican candidates are most well known due to all of the early campaigning in the first in the nation primary state.
If the Republican candidates have turned off the voters of Iowa in this way (all of them doing worse than McCain despite President Obama’s lukewarm 45% approval rating in the state) then it seems likely that they will turn off the voters in the rest of the country quite similarly.
Iowa: President Obama vs. Republicans
Obama 49%, Mitt Romney 39% (+10%)
Obama 51%, Rick Perry 38% (+13%)
Obama 51%, Michele Bachmann 34% (+17%)
Obama 51%, Herman Cain 33% (+18%)
Obama 54%, Sarah Palin 33% (+21%)

A Vineyard Too Far
People who rail against “fat cats” shouldn’t vacation with them.
By Sunday afternoon, the Gallup tracking poll showed a 17-point spread in the president’s approval rating — 38 percent approval to 55 percent disapproval. Such polls are fickle and can go up and down quickly, often depending on unwarranted and unfair perceptions and media hype, hinging on everything from hurricanes to killing bin Laden. That said, these recent abysmal numbers might suggest that for the first time, a considerable number of Americans is starting to be turned off not just by Barack Obama’s economic policies, but by Barack Obama himself. But why now?
The president’s latest Martha’s Vineyard vacation was a public-relations disaster, wholly unnecessary, and in part responsible for Obama’s most recent slide in the polls. Part of the problem was purely coincidental and no one’s fault: Who could have expected that while the president of the United States was resting on an exclusive private beach on a tony island on a calm August day, millions of Eastern Seaboarders around him would be engaged in a media-driven frenzy of emergency preparation and evacuation?
Yet most of the negative perception was the president’s own doing. For nearly three years, there has been something strange about the First Family’s ritzy getaway tastes. The annual Martha’s Vineyard rentals were bookended by First Family junkets to Vail, Costa del Sol, and Hawaii. The choice of venues spawned at least three problems for the president that have nothing to do with the First Family’s right, and indeed duty, to enjoy a little well-earned vacation time — or with the fact that other presidents have vacationed in nice places.
First, Obama’s fiery rhetoric (“fat-cat bankers,” “corporate jets,” “millionaires and billionaires,” “redistributive change,” “at a certain point you’ve made enough money,” etc.) has demonized the better off. Many successful liberal presidents do that, but they finesse the necessary fundraising and schmoozing with Wall Street zillionaires with tact and discretion. Bill Clinton was a past master at gluing a populist veneer atop his deep fascination with old money and hip celebrity. The Obamas are far clumsier in both their class-warfare boilerplate and their overt elite tastes, whose contradictions they apparently either miss or don’t much care about.
No doubt this August the presidential advisers, without a clue about life in Tulare or Des Moines, gave sycophantic pep talks to the Obamas not to listen to “right-wing talk radio” and just enjoy what they like to enjoy. Obama himself apparently is still confident that the media will always exempt his golfing in a way they never did Bush’s far less frequent putting. Michael Moore, after all, is not going to cut and paste a video clip of Obama on the fairway.
Yet some photos inevitably leaked out of the “redistributive change” statist at his $50,000-a-week rented estate, surrounded by “millionaires and billionaires” who could alone afford such rental prices, many of whom flew in on “corporate jets.” That disconnect appears to the American public as abjectly hypocritical. We all know that for the president to keep pushing his agenda of higher taxes, he will soon inevitably get back to bashing the rich. But we also assume that this time the public has seen the flip side of a one-eyed Jack and wonders, when the president hits up his Vineyard neighbors for campaign cash at his $20 million rented estate, whether he will first make sure that they are not “fat cats” and owners of “corporate jets.”
Even right-wing presidents, even in good times, know enough not to rub in too much the perks of being president. George W. Bush was pilloried for chain-sawing at “the ranch,” as if he were a counterfeit outdoorsman; but he still knew that his media critics suffered far more in his beloved nowheresville of Crawford than did he. The “Reagan Ranch” in the Santa Barbara Mountains was not really a ranch at all, but a rustic hovel, and the videos of Reagan in his early seventies, chopping wood amid burrs and stickers, with sweat spots under his arms, were not faked. In contrast, the elder Bush liked boating off his family estate in Maine — and was flayed for being a bit too happy with his seaside, preppie-sounding Kennebunkport mansion.
Timing poses a second problem, hurricanes apart. The United States is in the doldrums. The economic news — high unemployment, credit-downgrading, a ruined housing market, almost no growth, record debt, trillion-dollar-plus deficits, soaring fuel and food prices — is not just bad, but seems to be getting worse. Could not the president have gone home to Chicago for a week, followed by a weekend at Camp David — demonstrating in symbolic fashion to hurting Americans that their chief executive is cutting back on exclusive travel and amenities? Even Jimmy Carter knew enough to turn down the White House thermostat and put on a cardigan sweater when gas was hard to find. The misdemeanors of phony man-of-the-people photo-ops (the awkward, camouflaged John Kerry coming back from goose hunting) are usually far outweighed by the felonies of “I do what I want to do” overt elitism (the smug windsurfing John Kerry in spandex).
Finally, this summer’s golfing at Martha’s Vineyard has torn the curtain away from an image that Barack Obama has taken a lifetime to cultivate, to considerable advantage. He was decidedly a middle-class prep-schooler in Hawaii. He was not born into Clinton-like poverty. Occidental and Columbia are not Eureka College or Texas A&M. When Obama finally got some real money, he almost immediately bought a wannabe Chicago mansion and tried to enhance his grounds with help from Mrs. Tony Rezko. Nothing in Obama’s résumé suggests poverty — or disdain for elite enjoyment.
To square his apparently embarrassing middle-class circle, Obama has brilliantly manipulated some weird facets of American culture: Being not quite so-called “white,” and vocally left-wing, can mean that even a multi-millionaire has innate street credibility and can qualify for minority victimhood. The fact that Barack Obama is part Kenyan meant for many — and apparently for Barack Obama himself — that a record number of presidential golf outings, and Michelle’s Costa del Sol jetting, were still excused by the fossilized 1960s nexus between poverty, prejudice, and race.
Likewise, Obama (thanks to the two-decade tutelage of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright) does not talks like someone from Hawaii — at least not all the time. With some flair, he is able to turn on and off the slightly southern soaring cadences of the inner city (better than Hillary Clinton’s awkward attempts at clingers populism), both to reassure skeptical blacks of his racial solidarity and authenticity, and (as Harry Reid bluntly noted of the adroitly opportunistic diction) to remind his white liberal supporters that their efforts at penance really were genuinely well grounded. Again, in our upside-down world of race, a Clarence Thomas or a Condoleezza Rice, who grew up amid the authentic African-American struggle against Jim Crow, could never quite be as legitimately “black” as was Barack Obama (preppie, half-white/half-Kenyan), simply because liberal identity politics offers instant superficial authentication in a way real life cannot.
But this last in-your-face Martha’s Vineyard vacation was one too many even for our most adroit gymnast of identity and class politics: The public at last really does believe that Barack Obama, whatever his heritage or nomenclature, is an out-of-touch elitist who simply likes hanging out with wealthy people and shares their refined tastes, even as millions are out of work or broke. This summer all the old SEIU talk about “fat cats” and “corporate jets” has been reduced to a parlor game.
In short, this year’s vacation was a vineyard too far.

Intresting observations in this article, if a bit too critical. To me, it just goes to show how easily the public is manipulated by the media. One thing that came to mind as I read the article is that although the writer acknowledges that it is fine for Presidents to take vacations, he or she does not suggest what would have been an appropriate vacation for President Obama and his family to take in this case. Perhaps they should have gone to the Jersey shore and stayed at a Motel Six. LOL.

I'll agree with you on one issue, President Clinton knew how or was well advised on how to schmooze the general public. I have always liked him myself. Unfortunately, some folks take issue with the fact that President Clinton couldn't keep his dick in his pants. Personally, I think that makes little difference in a President's ability to do a good job. Besides, if anyone has the right to take issue with his extramarital affairs, it would be Hillary Clinton, his wife, not the public at large. Never-the-less, he was nearly impeached because some people believe the President has a moral obligation to behave a certain way....oh, and he lied about what he'd done. I guess that was one time his advisors screwed up.

Anyone who thinks that lying about a fucking blow job is a big deal is simply a shill.

He could lie about being a man at this point, I could care less. People would beg for Clinton over Obama at this point.

It seems to me some of you have missed the point. This is water under the bridge....ancient history. It makes no difference what anyone thinks about Clinton's romps or lies today. The fact remains that he was nearly impeached because of this issue. That just goes to show how ridiculous things can get, particularly when the media gets a hold of a story and milks it for all it is worth. I sometimes wonder if people can actually think for themselves. Often times it appears the general public lets the media dictate to them how to think.
