Title: Glass shade 3 1/4 fitter?
Post by: Butterbean on August 14, 2011, 04:39:27 PM
I'm looking for 2 alike 3 1/4 fitter glass shades that are not made in China but not extremely expensive.

Would like something open at the bottom that filters/mutes the light above as both will be at ~ eye level.  I'd like them to look good/unique/cool but it seems like 3 1/4 fitter in a good looking shade is pretty rare.

I've searched a lot and can't find anything.  No one seems to be able to help but if there is an answer, I know a getbigger has it!

This one suits people who like black floors.

Or suggest it as a project for a local carpentry/woodworking apprenticeship if translucent wood appeals to you.  Wouldn't take any more tools than doing bowls if it was bell shaped instead of closed.  Just a helluva lot more finesse.  Or a CAM lathe.

Or maybe hit up a glassblower and see what he can do.  Erlenmeyer flask shades.  Or flea markets & salvage?  Wrought iron and off white glass is a classic combo but would cost you a bomb to get made.  Iron over paper would work and be way cheaper.

If you're on a budget, some cloth that you like wrapped over a wire frame might do the trick.  Cool globes, I hope.

Here's a fun shade I ran into just now.

I am not able to "picture" what you're looking for very well  :-\  .. do you prefer clear glass or white ( frosted ) ?

I dig these stained glass ones but it sounds like the ones you want won't be "hanging"

I've actually done a little searching on that.

I've stopped by the Corning Glass Center when I'm that far south here .. they have gorgeous glass bowls , flowers etc that they make there on exhibit ... the choices would be endless ... which would be a great chance to get exactly what you want

Not sure how tasteless you wanna get but

Or a 10 gallon hat?

Spam cans, Cambells cans, etc.

Might be a little bit frat house but the top of a champagne bottle would diffuse light, the label would shade (if it wraps around - otherwise you have to drink another one to get a second label), and you could drill out the bottom with a glass hole saw.

Or you could hang

or any other container for
