U.S. Secret Service gets 2 new buses ahead of Obama tour
By Mark Knoller . The U.S. Secret Service has two new buses in its fleet for President Obama to use on his 3-day Midwest bus trip starting today.
An official tells CBS News the buses were purchased in recent months and will serve as part of the fleet of vehicles the Secret Service uses for all of its protectees.
In the past, the Secret Service would lease buses as needed and outfit them with the security and communications equipment as needed.
"We have not been satisfied with the level of protection offered by leased buses," said a Secret Service official.
Another official said the buses cost the service $1.1-million and are of a size and make the Secret Service finds most suitable for its equipment and protective requirements.
"Protectees have been utilizing buses for some 40 years or more," the official said, and the new buses will not be used just for the president.
Mr. Obama today begins a 3-day bus swing through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. He has four town hall meetings planned and a forum on rural economic issues.
Although the bus trip has the feel of a campaign swing, the White House is billing the 3-day tour as "official." That means taxpayers pick up all of the costs of the trip.
When Mr. Obama ventures out on political trips, his campaign or the Democratic National Committee typically pay a small portion of the cost of presidential travel, as required by the Federal Election Commission.
A spokesman says Mr. Obama views the outing as one of his "chief responsibilities" in office: "to spend some time outside Washington, D.C., talking to people all across the country about the economy and about how they're impacted by the policy decisions that he's making."
Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that such a bus trip "isn't just an appropriate thing for a president to do, it's something that a president should do."
The White House says Mr. Obama will use the town hall meetings to hear the concerns of the American people about the economy and their ideas on what needs to be done.
The Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called a news conference in Minnesota this morning to raise objections to the taxpayer-funded nature of the president's trip.

The Secret Service has revealed to Talking Points Memo that the government has purchased two armored buses for use by President Barack Obama and Republican candidates in the 2012 presidential campaign and beyond.
The agency initially declined to tell TPM whom the buses were bought from, but based on some searches of federal databases it looked to me like the seller was Hemphill Brothers Coach Co. of Whites Creek, Tenn. Last July, the Service signed a contract for nearly $2.2 million with the firm, according to a federal procurement database. (The entry doesn't specify the number of buses.)
"The contract you found is the contract," Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said Thursday morning. "It's two buses for $1.1 million each."
"We've been overdue for having this asset in our protective fleet for some time," Donovan said. "We've been protecting presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates all the way back to the 1980s using buses during bus tours."
In the past, the service leased buses and then tried to fit them with extra security gear. But that can't provide the assurance of starting from scratch.
"They're certainly going to be used for bus tours around the country," as well as other events, Donovan said. "When protectees go to remote areas, go camping or on a motorcyle trip, we''ll bring the asset out as a mobile security facility." (Kind of like a congressman's mobile office, I guess.)
The final cost of the two new buses will exceed $2.2 million, because the Service prefers to add its own aftermarket security features to vehicles. Donovan said the service will do so in this instance as well.
The $1.1 million price tag is roughly in line with costs for custom-made, luxury motorcoaches. This company quotes prices of $1.5 million to $2.5 million for a new luxury bus.

Obama arrived in Minnesota earlier today. "I am very pleased to be out of Washington," he said.
White House press secretary Jay Carney bridled at the notion that the three-day bus tour, which traverses three battleground states Obama won in 2008, had anything to do with the fact that he’s struggling to maintain support in those states ahead of the 2012 contest.
Carney said it was ridiculous to suggest that “anytime the president leaves Washington, it’s campaigning,” and that Obama was “doing what presidents do, going out into the country.”

Minneapolis — Burdened by sagging poll numbers, hamstrung by poor economic news, and trapped in Washington for much of the summer because of the debt ceiling fight, President Obama will seek to reverse his recent fortunes by hitting the open road.
Obama Monday will embark on a three-state, five-town bus tour deep in the heart of the American Midwest. The campaign-style swing comes at a time when a new Gallup Poll shows the president sliding below a 40 % approval rating for the first time.
The White House maintains the president will confine his remarks to the economy and will not go after his potential GOP presidential opponents. But at the very least, however, the trip should afford him a chance to renew his connection with a public that has been showing signs of increasing discontent with his administration.
Paul Begala, a former campaign aide to Bill Clinton who now advises a political action committee, Priorities USA Action, started by two ex-Obama aides, called for “bold action.”
“The whole focus of the country for the last month has been on these terrible negotiations over the debt ceiling. That hurt everybody. He’s got to turn the page,’ Begala said. “The president can’t wave a magic wand, but he has the power to set the agenda. Now’s the time.’’

CANNON FALLS, Minn. — President Obama launched a Midwestern bus tour devoted to the economy Monday by again calling for tax increases and accusing Republicans who oppose his plans of failing to put the "country first."
"You've got to send a message to Washington that it's time for the games to stop," Mr. Obama told a crowd of about 500 at a campaign-style event in a sun-splashed park. "It's time to put country first."
The president referred to the "debt debacle" that he just concluded with congressional Republicans, calling out Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, by name for resisting the president's efforts to raise taxes as part of a proposal to cut the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years.
"I put a deal before the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, that would have solved this problem," Mr. Obama said. "And he walked away. His belief was we can't ask anything of millionaires and billionaires and big corporations. Think about that. I mean, that's just not common sense,"
Mr. Obama, freed from the contentious debt negotiations in Washington that lasted most of the summer, is using the trip as an opportunity to portray himself to middle America as an independent voice fighting against partisan interests to create jobs.
Nearby in this town of 4,000, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus spoke at a rally where about 150 Republicans gathered ahead of Mr. Obama's scheduled event.
"We're ready to fight and we're here to take back our country," Mr. Priebus told the crowd, announcing plans for an "Obama's Debt-end Bus Tour" in response to Mr. Obama's trip.
Mr. Priebus said Republicans will appear at each of Mr. Obama's stops. He said the president has only made the economy worse.
"We're here because we're worried and we're concerned about the future of our country," he said. "We are in a battle for freedom in this country. … A country that has to surrender its sovereignty to its bondholders can't guarantee prosperity or freedom to anybody."
White House spokesman Jay Carney replied, "We're here to talk to the people of Cannon Falls about the economy. That's what presidents do."
Taxpayers are funding the three-day presidential trip, but the first event had many of the appearances of a campaign rally in this swing state.
About 500 supporters greeted the president in a park, with Mr. Obama standing in front of a made-for-TV backdrop of the sparkling Cannon River, with red-white-and-blue bunting and an enormous American flag. The president stood among supporters seated at picnic tables adorned with blue tablecloths.
Mr. Obama is riding in a customized armored bus that, according to a pool reporter traveling with him, has windows "so dark (except for those next to the driver) that it does not appear to have any windows at all."
The Secret Service has introduced a pair of the buses, at a cost of $1.1 million each, that will be used by presidential candidates in 2012 and for official White House events.
Even a young girl in the crowd seemed perplexed about the president's choice of location, asking him in a question-and-answer session, "Why Cannon Falls?"
Mr. Obama said it was because he heard the town had the smartest and best-looking children.
The president also called for new spending, saying teachers are underpaid and Congress should authorize a job bank for construction work.
"In the short term, we should actually make more investments that will put people to work and get the economy moving," he said. "States are still going through a tough time. I personally believe one of the most effective ways that we could help the economy is making sure that we're not seeing more teacher layoffs. I'm going to be working with Congress and with state governments across the country to prevent that from happening."
For people like Debra Wood, 58, a retired factory worker and a Democrat, getting to see the president was "the biggest thing in my life." She waited 10 hours at town hall for tickets to the event, and brought her 3-year-old granddaughter.
"He's doing the best he can," she said of Mr. Obama.
Not everyone in the audience, however, was a fan of the president. Adam Nord, 31, a cook at a casino and a Republican, voted for Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, for president in 2008 and said he probably won't vote for Mr. Obama next year, either.
"Obama came in and blamed everything on Bush," Mr. Nord said, referring to former President George W. Bush. "Then he gave money to the bankers, too, just like Bush."
Asked how Mr. Obama should help the economy, Mr. Nord said the president should "backtrack on his health care."
"If you're a healthy person, I don't think you should be forced to buy health care," Mr. Nord said.
A spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican, called Mr. Obama's bus tour "heavy on rhetoric and light on jobs policy — the hallmark of the Obama Administration."
"With millions of Americans out of work and an unemployment rate at 9.1 percent, why isn't the President putting forward his new job proposals as promised?" said spokesman Brian Patrick.
Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney, getting in his own jab at the president on his campaign website, dubbed Mr. Obama's Midwestern trip the "Magical Misery Tour."
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who chairs the White House Rural Council, said the bus tour is emphasizing the importance of economic recovery in rural America.
"The president is committed to making sure that every part of America participates in this recovery, particularly a place called rural America, a place where our values are rooted," Mr. Vilsack said.
The president moved on to northeastern Iowa later Monday for another town-hall meeting, and is expected to announce a new rural jobs initiative Tuesday in Iowa.

President Obama poked back today at critics who like to describe his landmark health law as "Obamacare."
"I have no problem with folks saying 'Obama cares,'" the president said at today's town hall in Cannon Falls, Minn. "I do care."
"If the other side wants to be the folks who don't care, that's fine with me," he said. "But, yeah, I do care about families who have been struggling because of crushing health care costs."
Obama predicted the Supreme Court would uphold the law, less than a week after an appeals court ruled against the requirement that nearly all Americans will have to buy some sort of health insurance.
Other courts have upheld the law, Obama noted. He argued that the individual mandate is constitutional because taxpayers have to bear the costs of emergency care when the uninsured get sick or injured.
"If the Supreme Court follows existing precedent, existing law, it should be upheld without a problem," Obama said. "If the Supreme Court does not follow existing law and precedent, then, you know, we'll have to manage that when it happens."
The fact that appeals courts have split on the law makes it a near-certainty that the high court will take the case; when the justices might rule is anybody's guess.
During his Minnesota town hall, Obama noted that one of the Republican presidential candidates -- front-runner Mitt Romney -- supported an individual mandate as part of the health care plan he signed as governor of Massachusetts.
"This used to be a Republican idea," he said.

Add Donald Trump to the list of people that seem to have doubts about President Obama’s national tour. Speaking from his office with Greta van Susteren today, Trump argued that the President takes “more vacations than any human being I’ve ever seen” and that his “fundraising tour” should not fall into the hands of taxpayers, citing a lack of leadership on his part. Trump and Van Susteren went through a long list of topics– from China and OPEC to Sarah Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann– but began with the President’s tour. The August vacation, separately, Trump argued “sends a very, very bad message,” but shrugged that President Obama “likes vacation” and won’t be stopped from taking one. He then turned to the actual tour, which he believed was part of his campaigning and not something the President was doing in his executive capacity. “Why isn’t his campaign paying for this, he argued,” noting that he was traveling on a bus and “the most expensive airplane you can fly” on the Taxpayers’ dime. He gave President Obama one compliment: “he’s a good campaigner– not a great campaigner, but a good campaigner.”
Van Susteren then turned to foreign policy, where Trump railed that the United States “were like patsies… the world is taking advantage of the United States” and cited the worst abuser as China, though added Colombia and a number of other countries to that list. He also had some words about Palin and Rep. Bachmann; asked to compare the two, he declined, but argued they were similar in the challenges they faced as conservative women. He also said he liked them both very much, had no idea whether Palin was running (the “famous pizza incident” did nothing to help him figure that out, he explained), and had yet to pick a candidate in the Republican race.

One of my best friends in High School was Jeff Thomas, grandson of Pearly A. Thomas whose family practically invented the bus and still produces buses of all kinds under Thomas Built Bus. Built in the USA. Next time you see a Bus, look at the make on it, I guarantee it will be a Thomas Bus. I think he was given around 40 million when he turned 25, but you`d never know it, used to drive around in an 1984 Dodge Ram Charger.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama is barnstorming the heartland to boost US jobs in a taxpayer-financed luxury bus the government had custom built -- in Canada, The Post has learned.
The $1.1 million vehicle, one of two that Quebec-based Prevost sold the government, has been tricked out by the Secret Service with state-of-the-art security features and creature comforts.
It's a VIP H3-45 model, the company's top of the line, and is used by major traveling rock bands.
"That's the more luxurious model," Christine Garant of Prevost told The Post.

"When we have the Country Music Awards, we sometimes see a lot of them," she said, noting that Kid Rock, David Lee Roth and Kenny Rogers also have owned them.
Obama's new ride is equipped to carry all the baggage a president needs -- including the "football" that allows him to remotely control US nuclear weapons.
There's electronic equipment allowing Obama to communicate and teleconference worldwide.
Like his GM-built limousine, nicknamed "The Beast," the bus has armored doors.
The president also has large flat-screen TV sets and comfortable couches.
There's a bathroom, but unlike on Air Force One, no sleeping area.
The bus was ordered by the Secret Service in July 2010 and delivered two months ago.
The feds bought the two coaches for $2.2 million from Hemphill Brothers Coach, based in Tennessee. It installed custom interior upgrades into the Prevost shell, which accounted for about half the cost.
The contract lists the country of origin as Canada and place of manufacture as "outside U.S. - Trade Agreements," a possible reference to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Hemphill wouldn't comment on the bus. But an ad on its Web site for a similar bus costing $100,000 less than what has been dubbed "Greyhound One" boasts: "This coach is appointed with the finest materials and the latest in high tech electronics and was built for a top entertainer to travel efficiently without losing the luxuries of home.
"It is the perfect coach for entertainers, sports stars, NASCAR drivers, executive travel, or anyone accustomed to the very best."
Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, said, "There are certain security and communications equipment that we'll have in there. It's just a better situation for us rather than leasing something and then putting in temporary equipment."
Hemphill Brothers lists Beyoncé, Cher, KISS, Van Halen, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Pope Benedict XVI as clients on its Web site.
The Secret Service says the buses will be available to other protectees who travel by bus, which could include the 2012 GOP presidential nominee.

It's the butt of jokes and has been called a "Magical Mis ery Tour," but President Obama has scored a neat trick with his Midwest bus trip. When he gets home, he can boast to the first lady: Honey, I shrunk the presidency.
That's not what he had in mind, yet it's the only accomplishment of his misbegotten adventure. The highlights are his expensive motorcade rumbling through Iowa corn fields not far from GOP candidates, and stopping so he can squabble with Tea Partiers, propose more taxes, and blame everybody else for everything that's happened on his watch.
Throw in his complaint about a "run of bad luck" and you have the Obummer Odyssey, a bracing reminder of Jimmy Carter's "malaise" moment.
The magic is gone. Obama's campaign team has bared its strategy: attack, attack, attack whomever the GOP nominates. Vote your fears, not your hopes.
But wait -- the president has a plan to create jobs and deal with the debt, the White House declares. Finally, in the 32nd month of his presidency, he's going to show his cards.
Never mind. He has a plan, but will release it next month, the 33rd of his presidency. No "fierce urgency of now" there.
First, he's retreating to another vacation on Martha's Vineyard. No doubt he'll gather his kitchen Cabinet to conjure more ways to separate Americans from their money and each other.
His is a fall from grace that hasn't hit bottom. With 40 percent of the public still approving of his performance, it'll probably take a second recession for truth to dawn on the diehards.
We can shout at each other over whether he's actually up to the job, but not about whether he's willing to make the ideological sacrifices necessary to do it successfully. He is so determined to transform the nation into his own ideal that he's still pushing the same class-warfare nonsense he did three years ago, though now his record makes his aim more obvious.
Although 25 million Americans -- 25 million! -- are in want of a full-time job, our president is stuck in political navel gazing. He has a pronounced fetish for self-reverence and, according to many eyewitness accounts, regards himself as not just the smartest man in every room, but also the only moral one.
Everyone else is compromised and limited, while only he is pure and omniscient. Or so he genuinely seems to believe.
But strip away even that contention, and the facts are still the facts. The world is spinning dangerously out of control and America is edging closer to the abyss by the day. Yet amidst a global crisis of confidence, the chair in the Oval Office is empty, our leader pretending he's engaged and relevant when he's merely aiming to keep his job.
It's the art of pretend, where he would have us believe his bus trip is relevant to all that ails us. It is blatantly a campaign event billed to taxpayers, and that alone diminishes him and the office.
Ah, yes, the campaign. The big news is that new GOP hopeful Rick Perry said something stupid. He claimed it would be "almost treasonous" for the federal reserve to print more money for political purposes and that Texas would treat Chairman Ben Bernanke "pretty ugly."
Stupid for sure. But let's have perspective. Perry's words are only self-destructive, unlike the wreckage of the Obama presidency.

Obama's Midwest tour last week prompted more criticism and ridicule than support on Twitter, according to this week’s Hill Hexagon.
Regardless of what President Obama and his political advisers had hoped for, the three-state Midwest bus tour last week prompted far more criticism and ridicule than support in Twitter comments, according to this week’s Hill Hexagon.
An analysis of Twitter traffic by Crimson Hexagon over the days of the tour showed that 72 percent of the opinions expressed were negative, while 22 percent were neutral and only 6 percent were favorable.
Among the negative comments, 21 percent were generally negative toward Obama, 17 percent called it a campaign stunt, 15 percent complained about taxpayers picking up the tab, 12 percent offered derisive names for the tour — similar to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s “Magical Misery Tour” — and 6 percent complained that he was not in Washington working.

Oh yes……and THEN he leaves on a 12 day vacation to Martha’s Vineyard…….to REST UP from this campaign bus tour!
And don’t forget……..those brand new shiny black buses aren’t DRIVEN to the location where they meet Obama. Those buses are loaded up on one or more C-17s. Then, they are flown to the destination ahead of AirForce- AND!…….this is REPEATED FOR EVERY CAMPAIGN STOP. On this ‘bus tour’, the Prez will lecture the ‘little people’ on how they need to live within their means and cut-back! Remember when very recently Obama told that family man to GO BUY A HYBRID VAN when he said he couldn’t afford to fill up his truck???? Obama’s ‘carbon footprint’ must be as large as most cities by now.
All of this on the taxpayer’s dime…..But remember, this is NOT a campaign trip – it is “Meet with the people” trip only! So that the DNC does NOT pay a cent for all of this.

This is really disgusting! The so called “Bus Tour” was not a bus tour at all !
An AP reporter said that Obama might have ridden these expensive buses only one mile at each stop. Therefore, it wasn’t really a “BUS TOUR”! Obamaspent most of the “BUS TOUR” on an airplane traveling between stops. Itlooks like Obama has scammed the American people again……..with the help of the liberal media. It’s no damn telling just how much this “show” cost the American taxpayer.
